The experience depends on what you are expecting. Based on the website, I was expecting a restaurant that would fit into the “fit for foodies” Opentable category. Walking in, it was immediately evident it would not be that - loud pop music, a tv turned on, menus suitable for takeout... Service was great, so we felt too guilty to just have a drink and appetizer and go elsewhere. Portions were huge but the food was also something we consumed out of politeness and so as not to waste. I do think other customers had a much better experience (they all seemed pleased) so again, I think it comes down to expectations.
The food was terrible. Cold pancakes, tasteless benedict, really bad food Im sorry. Never going back.
It was the perfect place for a few buddies to meet for a quick holiday lunch!!! Food was terrific as always!!!
They kind of accommodated me but they are listing GF dishes that are not GF. Do not eat here if your have Celiac. It’s not safe.
They post an extensive GF menu online. When I got there they had three GF things on the menu. Two were appetizers and one was an entree. Of those, only one was actually GF. They deem anything without flour in it to be GF. They had a fried appetizer listed as GF even though they fried it in the same fryer as breaded items. The entree also could not be made without CC due to the bulk prepared risotto. So I could have had it without the risotto or the sauce but I chose not to do that.
They did prepare a dish for me and I got CC. The food was ok but not great. Would have gone somewhere else but due to time constraints had to make do. The waiter was apologetic and said they were taking proper measures to prepare my food but my gut says otherwise.
Won’t be back and don’t recommend for other people with Celiac.
The wine is a great moderate selection. The apps are tasty and small so that you can enjoy one of the best burgers we've had in the Bay Area.
The noise level is very high
Rendering conversation difficult
Great cocktails and food. We'll be back
All good except the noise level was just too much.
Great service! Great food! Little too noisy to my taste.
Meal was fine but not special; rather expensive for ambiance, service, quality. Portions were large, but overly sauced / very heavy. Drinks were quite expensive, one diner was served top-shelf liquor without being asked if he wanted to pay for that (rail would have been fine). Overall, it was.... okay.
Food is always fresh and delicious. Like how they continously introduce new dishes. Service is attentive.
This is the second time I visited Three within 2 months, the services were almost equally bad both times, while the food was way worse the second time. I thought to give the restaurant a chance after our first visit since I remember the cocktails, bacon bits (an appetizer), and skirt steak were pretty good during my first visit. Not sure if the exec. chef was on break on Sunday nights or perhaps I didn't drink enough during my second visit, but everything tasted mediocre. The cod fish risotto smelled extremely fishy, bacon bits were ok but the plating was disappointing, few other appetizers we ordered were underwhelming, signature cocktails had no garnishing, not even mint leaves or cucumber as described on the menu, steak sandwich was dry, hard, and bland, salads were boring...
During the second visit (a Sunday evening), there was just one waiter serving the entire restaurant and it appeared that he was overwhelmed which my be the cause of the occasional impatience on his face when we asked questions about the menu. I also wanted to point out that their Halloween decor was just tasteless, and the cheesy music they played reminds me of Safeway. Last but not least, the greeter lady was rude both times we visited. Not welcoming, unenthusiastic, unprofessional - the only thing that seemed to make her excited was when she told us $2 cake cutting fee per person was required for the birthday cake we brought with us and when she sat at the bar drinking with the bartender.
Highly recommend! Three is located in a great area of town...full of walkable shops and restaurants. Great menu, fun decor, attentive staff.
Good. Not great. The food is always pretty good, but the service is hit or miss. Sometimes it is excellent and other times you wait forever for everything. You just never know.
The food and atmosphere was excellent. Our waiter and the other staff that served us were great.
Food and cocktails were excellent. Our party of 6 enjoyed every dish and every drink we ordered. Service was ok and attentive. The fried cheese appetizer was a crowd-pleaser. We had to return our NY Steaks once (2 orders) because medium rare came out medium well, but the server was apologetic and took it back right away.
Truly an awesome experience every time
Food is OK. Used to be much better. Was the only place we could make a reservation at our desired time. Would not rush back to eat there.
Met a friend here for brunch. Service was excellent and they were very patient when my friend was very late. The bacon bytes are to die for. Salmon Benedict was a bit salty; however, maybe I should have know it would be as it was made with smoked salmon. We really enjoyed our meal and the service. The only down side was that parking in that area is a bit dicey. It's a very busy area.
Onion Soup was really good... However I also had a signature dish - Fried Chicken and Waffle sandwich and the was not very good. chick was good but the waffle was cold and soft not crispy. The potatoes that came with the dish where also cold.. My friend had the corn beef hash and she said it was really good.
So Yes, have the soup and the corn beef hast, but skip the chicken and waffle sandwich.
Great selection of food-Brunch available all day which is nice!
First time for brunch crab Benedict is awesome eggs cooked perfectly
Good atmosphere! Food was delicious and the desserts were out of this world. Will go again!
Love this place.
I joined a friend for a long, late lunch during a weekday, and found Three to be quiet and inviting. I ordered the Nicoise salad, which was substantive, fresh and delicious. My colleague ordered the chilaquiles and found them to be flavor-packed and delightfully filling. The micheladas were phenomenal - some of the best we've had. Couple the excellent food with the outstanding service from the attentive staff, and I would easily go back to Three again. In fact, I'm taking my wife there on a date tomorrow!
Customer service was lacking. Waitress looked like she just woke up from a nap. Not engaged and not excited/enthused to be there. Food was bland. Ordered porcini spaghetti and needed salt, pepper, and chili flakes.
The stacked chicken and watermelon salad were both excellent, and more flavorful than any I have had in some time,
We had a celebration with 2 kids and 5 adults. Everything went well, food and service. It was hard to hear one another, however. We had a large round table and the noise level was just too high. Otherwise, I would recommend.
Last time we went there for dinner, the food was excellent but we cannot enjoy it. We were seated on a table right next to the west facing window on a very hot day. The waiter did not make any effort to help, after we complained. They refused to close down the curtain further, or move us to cooler table.
Therefore 4 stars for food, but 1 star for service.
Good looking menu, but the food did not measure up. Additions service was lacking. Not a busy night. Two at the table were still eating our appetizer/salads, and the main courses were delivered. I offer to keep them warm. The server was actually motioning as is she wanted us to move the food we were still eating out of the way so she could put down the plates. On getting home, my wife found she had grease spots on her pants from the seat cushion. Too many good restaurants in San Mateo to eat here again.
Horrible food quality.
Appreciate that they serve brunch during the weekdays, a plus for me. The food was good, service could step up a bit, though I might return if I felt it would deliver upon my expectations. It could they were having an off day, though I had to get the staffs attention which took roughly 10 mins and everyone there had already been taken care of...... and it was not busy?
Awesome they never disappoint. All the staff are great
I have been coming to Three Restaurant for the last 3 years. The food, service and atmosphere have been very good and very consistent. It's my go to restaurant in San Mateo.
Great food, good service and quiet table by kitchen
Limited menu - especially salads
Three Restaurant & Bar is a terrific restaurant to meet a friend for lunch, enjoy drinks after work or to have a great dinner with family. The food is delicious, the ambiance is great and service is excellent! I can’t wait to return!
We’ve been going to Three and formerly Astaria for years. The food and service were good but not great.
not impressed with the look and set up of the restaurant. cheap blinds on the window, nor table cover, just a regular place nothing for special occasions or date night. but most of our food was good except for the stacked chicken which was the specialty of the house and it was over cooked and burnt.
We walked in and the host was rude we get to our seat and our server goes to another table that was there after us to serve them. When she gets to us she is rude and we felt rushed to give her our drink order. She only checked on us once but checked on the table next to us multiple times. Let it be known there where not a lot of tables in her area.
By far this was the worst experience I have at any restaurant and me and my husband will not be returning.
