Thousand Pound Wine Store
Victoria’s wine canteens are a rapidly growing regional obsession amongst city barflies.
Grape aficionados haven't retreated into their cellars to sulk, they are venturing out of town
to find the best boutique sip three hours north of Melbourne.
Reinventing the grape genre, Thousand Pound tosses out stuffy pretences,
blurring the boundaries between city and country into an underserved hood,
creating funky, affordable vin lists paired with Simon Arkless’s chef-driven fare.
Sip and swirl your way through the best wines the region has to offer or venture
globally from your seat at the bar.
Sophisticated restaurant serving excellent steak, great wine list. Will ge back
Thoroughly enjoyed your venue and was exactly as I expected. Perfect wine bar experience with great wines and food.
New front of house guy was very engaging. Noise level in the narrow side area is quite high making it hard to hear. Food was great as always and like the menu changes regularly as we visit regularly!
The quality of food was very good, however the menu is very limited - both food wise and wines by the glass. For a wine bar in a wine region with, by its own advertising over 140 wines available, there was a selection of maybe 5 red/5 white by the glass and only one or 2 of these from local wineries. I've since found out this restaurant is actually owned by one of the wineries so perhaps that is why they are peddling their own wines by the glass. Of the limited food menu - we were disappointed to find they were out of one of the steak cuts that they were recommended for (at a 7.30pm sitting) and our food took over an hour to come out. Would I go back? Probably not.
Food was fantastic. Service was a tad relaxed but overall good. Atmosphere was nice, just a bit on the noisy side.
The food was fantastic and the service was great. The only thing negative that I would say is that all the tables were high with high stools to sit at and they became uncomfortable after awhile. Still think it was 5 star but I'm glad I was fit enough to sit on them
Excellent venue, service and drinks menu. Our only compliant the fish was overcooked. We did complain - but nothing was resolved.
Excellent food and service, looking forward to our next night out at Thousand Pound.
BEST steak I have had in years. Everyone enjoyed their meals and entrees. We played lucky dip with Red wine selection and it was fantastic. Will definitely go back.
This restaurant has declined I’m afraid. Just loved it 6 months ago and took friends back on Saturday night and was very disappointed. Entree choice limited, when having a steak for main, I dont want meat for entree. Between us we ordered the 2 seafood entrees, scallops while delicious was very small quantity. Prawns were tiny still with shells, that you eat whole. Should of been told this when ordering. Steaks were delicious last time this time very ordinary. Chewy and very undercooked. I was offered a $6 glass of wine as compensation for my $40 steak I couldn’t eat. Hmmmm!!! Wine selection still excellent though.
The best steak of any restaurant I've tried. I plan weekend trips away to Rutherglen, specifically to go to this restaurant. This time I went with three other friends who had not been before. They all loved it as well.
My only suggestion for improvement is that all the tables are high so the only seating is bar stools. These can be quite uncomfortable for some people.
We luv this place. Great service great food with a real nice atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Great atmosphere and delicious food!! Definitely would recommend it!!
I found that the wait staff were extremely rude and not at all accommodating. Jason (our waiter) belittled me in front of our friends when I asked if he would get my son a drink by saying that he was busy and he would get to me when he could. I realise that staff are often busy, however, he said this in loud aggressive voice and I felt that he could have handled it more professionally.
Whilst the environment was quite funky, the music was so loud that we could not hear ourselves talk amongst our friends.
We are overseas tourist and visiting friends local to this area and had heard so much about this restaurant. Our friends were very excited to be taking us there, but the overall experience was very disappointing and I would never recommend this to fellow travellers.
Absolutely THE place to go in Rutherglen - food, wines and service were fantastic and couldn't be faulted. Only suggestion is that someone respond to the answerphone queries about bookings before Friday or ask Open Table to qualify why bookings can't be made for more than 10 people.
We had a good meal at Thousand Pound when we were in Rutherglen for the night but the menu was quite restricted - very steak oriented for main course and not much else. We had some entrees which were excellent, especially the Asian style squid salad - absolutely delicious! Why not have more of this kind of dishes as mains? The restaurant’s main room was very nicely designed and we would have loved to be seated there, but the noise was too much - We don’t understand why very loud disco music was played? Great for dancing but not if you want to have a nice dinner! Anyway, so sorry got not ratimg this place higher, I am sure they could do it.
Highly recommend this restaurant, lovely vibe. The food was wonderful, the staff excellent and pleasantly attentive. Already know what I would like to order next time we visit, fingers crossed it will still be on the menu.
Fabulous night with friends. Suggest a different tonic water than Schweppes. Variety is good. It was especially noisy .
Amazing steaks... nice to see that they understand meat and treat it well.
Gorgeous flavours overall.
I had the best steak ever and a delicious wine. The menu is modest but all good quality.
Service on Sat 16th was terrible.
After waiting for drink table service for 20minutes after being seated my husband went to bar himself to order drinks, girl behind bar quite rude about placing order at bar.
Throughout the evening he had to return 3 times for further drinks! Table service was horrendous, not overly busy either.
Our bill was $151, top price for crap service.
Will not return here.
The food is outstanding here. The ambience makes you excited to be there and that you have made the best choice for your night out. The staff are helpful, vibrant and professional. The decor is so cool. Even the amenities are lovely. Highly recommended.
We enjoyed some lovely Rose wines with a selection of beginners for a meal. Well priced, very enjoyable food and atmosphere will definitely return
Too noisy to communicate properly ! ....& only 4 of us! Food was delicious though.
We enjoyed our evening food and service great
Wine i think a tad expensive in my view
But atmosphere was great indeed
Had a fantastic evening at Thousand Pound.
Fantastic service from Alex & the staff, brilliant steak & very tasty sparkling red!
Superb food, wine and service in groovy rather than rich upper class surroundings.
Great service and excellent food. The place was not too busy and there was not too much noise.
I have been many times before. Always a great time!
Maybe. I found the wine choices over priced. The food was a bit pretentious for a tapas bar whilst also skipping on quality with the chips (frozen ones you can buy from the grocery store!). Make the share platters a little more generous as they're being shared
Possibly the best meal I have ever had. Just amazing!
great food, value and good selection of wines at a reasonable price with a modern twist in acountry town.
we had a beautiful evening.our food was delicious, our staff wre so kind, helpful and attentive. couldn't have wished for a better night. thanks to everyone concerned.Mariela & Peter Joyce
Very disappointed in the food. Their most expensive steak, Scotch fillet, was pre sliced (what's that about?), chewy and stringy. The steak came with fries, which you would expect to be served with a pub meal or a McDonald burger. The rocket salad consisted of 80% iceberg lettuce and 10% pear and cheese and 10% rocket. Presentation of the salad was extremely poor, almost as though the 'top layer' of pear and cheese was positioned to disguise the fact that the salad consisted of mostly iceberg lettuce. We expected to pay top dollar for a beautiful meal at this restaurant, it has previously been out first pick in town, this experience was so poor, it now it will be our last choice and we will go to the local pub for a better cooked meal, even though it has less ambience. We did inform the restaurant on the night and were given two free drinks as a discount, which was much appreciated though not enough to keep our loyalty. It was never about the money, but about the quality, and we wouldn't risk the chance of experiencing such a poor meal again.
We dined with friends and had a very enjoyable evening with excellent food and wine.
Great ambiance, if a little dark to see menus. Great service and wine selection. Food overpriced for size, taste and quality. Very limited choice on the Menu.
Lovely evening. Enjoyed the food wine ambience. Will go again next time we’re in Rutherglen.
Great place and space, a real buzz and great food. Less formal than the other big high-end restaurant in Rutherglen, a lot more energetic and just good eats and wine!
We enjoyed the food, the service was good to start with but waned as they got busy. I would recommend the place as the food was very nice but with the caveat that it is incredibly noisy! We could hear each other but we could also hear every word of the conversations coming from people 2 and 3 tables away, it was very annoying.
We loved our evening! Our only complaint really was that the steaks were served to us only warm and would have been lovely hot! The scallops were exceptional! We enjoyed the atmosphere though low seats for older people might be a good option!
