This is a hotel restaurant located sort of out of the way in the University of Utah Research Park. We went to a special Thanksgiving Day buffet. Overall it was a good meal, but it was a mixed experience. There was a quite variety of dishes besides the traditional turkey. The turkey was a boneless roast. It was dry and not particularly flavorful. The roast Tri-tip was excellent, however. The accompanying horseradish sauce was about as bland as I have ever tasted. Arby's has better in the plastic packets. The buttermilk mashed potatoes could have been mashed a little more for my taste. The stuffing was soggy, but nicely seasoned. The sweet potatoes were a runny mess with marshmallow. I didn't try them. The bourbon butternut squash was excellent. Another high point was the huge bowl of large cocktail shrimp and mussels. There were crab legs also. The green beans were better than average, not overcooked. The roasted brussels sprouts were great. I enjoyed the butter lettuce with pears, roasted walnuts, and blue cheese salad There was also a good looking classic Cesare. . There were a lot of other offerings, notably a mack and cheese bar where a server mixed in whatever additions you requested., rolls, deserts--including gluten free, fruit salad, hummus, etc. Service was indifferent. We had to fetch our own water from a table across the room.
We went to the Thanksgiving buffet. It was amazing, food very delicious. The make your own mac and cheese bar brought my 17 year old son to tears several times it was so good. Someone forgot to update the schedule on OpenTable for the holiday, fortunately they called me Wednesday asking if I'd like to come in earlier, since they were closing at 5PM, which is when OpenTable had the reservations starting.
We were there for their Thanksgiving buffet. There was an abundance of food; great variety. They planned well for a large crowd and didn't have to stand in lines. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would have liked a little more ambiance and coziness, but realize that's difficult when you are being served and eating in a huge conference room space.
My wife and I visited their Thanksgiving buffet (available only on holidays), and enjoyed it much. Very efficient servers and bussers reminded me of the restaurant dance scene from "Hello, Dolly." Turkey (of course) was tender, ham, tri-tip roast beef, salmon (a little fishy), sides, killer cranberry sauce, salads, pasta bar with sauces made to order by a sous-chef, cold cuts, and of course a dessert table with a selection of gluten-free desserts. Price typical for holiday buffets, but half price for senior citizens. Yay!
We had Thanksgiving buffet dinner there. First experience at this restaurant. We were absolutely delighted with the fantastic array of food offerings. It couldn't have been better. The staff removed empty plates quickly and were very personable. The fact that senior citizens paid only half was a tribute to the restaurant's dignified offering of not only fantastic food, but affordability for the senior segment. Thank you very kindly. We shall see you more often now that we have experienced this wonderful place.
Loved the ice turkey~ The Mac & Cheese Station was great! The Tri-Tip was my favorite! Ham came in 2nd!
The setting was quiet but the food was average. My party of 4 was just the 2nd table with people in the restaurant and the food took forever to get out. it was average food and not worth a 2nd visit.
The chef introduced himself and his food was wonderful!
The food was just okay for the price. The service was slow, I think there were only 2 servers for the entire restaurant. The kitchen was very slow, I ordered my omelette at the same time I ordered my coffee and it came after everyone else at the table was finished with breakfast (they ate from the buffet). The hostess filled our water glasses right before we asked for the check. We ate here because it was included in our hotel stay. Next time we’ll eat off property.
Expansive menu with excellent variety. What we had was delicious.
The atmosphere was great and the staff was amazing! The food was mediocre. We ordered a hummus plate as an appetizer and they put old, bendable, and rubbery celery and other veggies on it. The restaurant is trying a little too hard to be high-end. I recommend they revamp the entire menu to be more casual and ensure they only sell food that tastes great and the biggest problem, to make sure the food is fresh.
Wonderful food, great service, and with-it. Easy location to get to. Located in basement of the Marriot University Park hotel. In spite of a very late night arrival mere minutes before the grill closed the food was impeccable. A more than capaple staff oversaw the bar with specific recomendations for signature beers to accompany the menu choices. We felt attended to but not smothered. The descriptions of the menu items facilitated decisions and the follow up on the choices we had selected was also well timed. They have a number of starters, entrees and sandwiches, but you don't end up reading a book with too many choices. The assistance with our leftovers was also gratefully appreciated. We're going back and recommending this restaurant to other locals.
I have never left a bad review for any restaurant in my life. I have also never not left a tip (even with bad service) until tonight. The service at this place was absolutely terrible. Fortunately, they brought the wine we ordered within a reasonable time. But that was it. We sat around for an hour and a half without the waiter coming back to our table. There were people being seated, then leaving because they simply weren’t being waited on. It wasn’t busy at all. There were approximately 14 people in the entire restaurant and I saw at least 4 people who were wait staff walking around. I finally walked up to the guy and asked if he would just ring us up for the wine and he said “yeah sorry, my kitchen is crazy tonight”. The place wasn’t even close to half full. Then another waitress asked me if we would like to talk to the manager. I saw the guy who was most likely the manager (shirt and tie different than the wait staff). Why would I want to talk with him? He was obviously part of the problem. I wasn’t out with my wife on a Saturday night to explain to the manager how bad of a job he was doing. Poorly managed to say the least. I could go on, but need the aggravation to end. Overall, i would be firing many if I had anything to do with that show. Never again.
Unexpectedly great experience locating out of town.
Thistle and Thyme is a charming restuarant tucked back in the corner of a Marriott. The ambience is quiet, charming, and relaxing. The service is friendly. The food looks and tastes great. I had a caprese sandwich and I wasn't another one. I really enjoyed it.
