Thirty Bales
Thirty Bales is a celebration of everything Midwestern cuisine has to offer. We're an upbeat neighborhood restaurant bringing together bright personalities, bold recipes, clean ingredients and craft spirits and playing with the flavors that make the Midwest a place unlike any other.
If you're curious about our name, it comes from the legend of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. As the story goes, Babe had an appetite as big as Bunyan himself and is rumored to have eaten 30 bales of hay a day.
Like our restaurant's big blue spirit animal, we're a pack of people that lives to eat and drink. We're endlessly in love with the Midwest and its connection to seasonal ingredients grown close to home. It's what inspires our menu and our team. And it's what inspires us as we tell our own story with the flavors and spirits of the Midwest.

I can't say enough about the Spare Rib Tacos. I dream about them and drool. The spare rib pot pie is also delicious as are the devilish eggs. Looking forward to my next visit.
Love the theme of midwestern, affordable cuisine. Service was excellent. Short rib pie had excellent tender, delicious meat- the carrots were underdone. My husband got the Alfredo and it was too salty- but they didn’t charge us for it.
The atmosphere was really unique- cozy and casual at the same time. Comfortable and elegant. I would go back.
The curry thing is very delicious, must try
First time out since the Covid restrictions went in place. They were very good with cleaning and very welcoming. We started with the cauliflower tacos and they were fabulous? Will return just for those! Nice variety on the menu and portions were generous. We will return.
Great food and service xxxcccccccccccccccccccccccc
Every time we eat at Thirty Bales I am so impressed with the creativity of the Chef. We started with our standard Devilish Eggs and Drummies that are the perfect starter. Our server recommended a Short Rib Taco special. The mixture of flavors in the taco was outstanding, served up on homemade wild rice tortillas. It was one of the best tacos I have ever had. I did not want to overeat, so almost declined dessert, but glad I opted on the overeating path. The Babe's Brownie Sundae was perfect. A deconstructed sundae that had all the flavors working in a perfect combination. It was like three different desserts in one. My only regret was having shared the dessert. I will not make that mistake next time.
Server was really nice and attentive. We had the Brussels sprouts for an appraiser, delicious! My father had the walleye sandwich with salad. This was I
His first time and he loved it. I had the Lucy burger, it was good but it was too rich and I could not finish it.
Great did abs service. Love the wings abs burgers.
We love 30 Bales every time we go. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. Drink selections are awesome and the deviled eggs are a must have appetizer!
Such a welcoming, friendly spot each and every time. Wonderful, attentive service and delicious food too!
Been here before to dine on the patio (a very good experience), but this was my first timing inside. Staff were very pleasant, quick, and mindful of social distancing and keeping the dining space clean for customers. Food was AMAZING as usual; I recommend the Brunch menu's Tostada and Bottomless Mimosa.
Variety of unique dinner plates to try! Our server was great about giving recommendations and the happy hour drinks deals were great! Definitely would come back to try something new in the future.
Great food, at a great price. Friendly service. During this time of COVID, felt safe with tables spaced well apart, high ceilings and minimal traffic. Will go there again.
Great as always!
Small but good breakfast menu. Coffee drinks not very flavorful. Needed more oomph. Liked the salad on the side with the breakfast sandwich. Bacon was way too fatty. Nice surroundings though.....good music in background.
Great staff, great atmosphere, great location. It was very quiet, but it was Sunday morning. Had the devilish eggs starter - great concept, a little bland. Pancakes were good - nice and fluffy but the buttermilk taste was a touch too strong. Definitely still good though! The person I dined with had the Eggs Benedict and devoured, so I think they were very good! Would definitely go back for lunch or dinner.
Great stop - good happy hour and food, beverage choices..fun decor and great location on Main Street in beautiful downtown Hopkins.
First time at this restaurant - and we LOVED it! Great quality of food, plenty of options. Hand cut fries were FABULOUS!!!!!
Food was very good. Service from Ian was fantastic. His opinions about food and drinks were 100% right on.
Glad to see a very good restaurant in downtown Hopkins.
Great friendly service and prices in line.
Wasnt very busy, so very quiet. Took my 5 year old. Food was very good.
Good food. Nice location. Lots of space
Always a good time with great food!
This is a real gem in the heart of Hopkins. We sat outside where the tables were appropriately spaced apart. The food was, as always, terrific! The staff were super accommodating to our every need. Love this place!
Food and service outstanding. Always something new on the menu to try, while keeping some of our favorites. No room for dessert, but saw some people sharing delicious looking desserts around us and will try next time.
Nice place to eat. Clever menu, simple, clean on your palatte and the food was good. We will definitely come back to try the rest of the menu.
Had an amazing experience. Heard about them from the Garage Logic Podcast. The food was amazing!
We love it every time we go! Yummy food and drinks. Perfect for a midweek date night.
The service was great, our waitress was very helpful telling us about the menu items, the drinks were very good, and the food was delicious, looking forward to visiting again.
We tried Thirty Bales on Friday evening and will definitely be back. The menu had many items that we wanted to try. We went with the Brussels sprout appetizer, the chicken and andouille bowl, and the bread pudding. All were delicious. The service was a nice slow pace and created a wonderful evening.
The walleye in the Bol Du Nord was way overcooked - burnt on the edges and very dry. This was clearly evident when it was delivered to our table. I was shocked the chef allowed it out of the kitchen and surprised the server set it down at our table. I probably should have sent it back but don't like to do that for fear of what will be delivered next , plus I didn't want to wait 15 more minutes while my wife ate her meal.
The ambiance was great. The service was good minus the lack of attention to the burnt food. All safety protocols were being followed so I felt safe. There are better options out there for the prices they charge.
Had the truffle fries, walleye sandwich, beet salad, and a bale burger. Best meal in recent memory. Definitely going back!
Great service and food was fresh from the scratch kitchen.
Patio Pasta was great!
Great food, service and ambiance. Great experience even during the epidemic. Safe, clean and comfortable.
We went for the Sunday brunch, outstanding food served in an artful way. Nice decor, clean place. The staff were excellent.
It was an amazing experience! I'll be back!
Two visits in two weeks. The fried cauliflower tacos were a real treat--roasted corn salsa is flavorful, creative cooking. Cheeseburger cooked the way I requested--rare side of medium--a pleasant surprise. I don't know if the menu has changed with the pandemic (I think it's edited), but I found the quality has greatly improved over two previous visits in the past 2-3 years, which left me unimpressed. So happy to experience some really well prepared food, and a menu that makes it difficult to decide what to choose. Servers Amy and Jordan were friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Scratch cocktails and a nice wine list are bonuses. I hope it survives covid time, because I'll look forward to returning for more seasonal "home" cooking. Thanks to the Thirty Bales team for their efforts to make dining out (outside) worthwhile--and enjoyable!
The waitress did not serve one of us the coffee he requested. She was not as attentive to us as we would have liked, but she did seem like the only person on the patio working, so she indeed was stretched/busy.
The Eggs Benedict was disappointing, with modest, little flavor.
We did appreciate how the music was not too loud and we could carry on a conversation.
Patio was great until the wind and rain came. Staff helped us move inside.
We enjoyed our meal!
The Chicken BLT was delicious.
