About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Lively
  • Hot spot
Thip Khao is acclaimed chef Seng Luangrath's flagship restaurant in Columbia Heights, Washington, DC. Thip Khao serves up spicy Lao (or Laotian) dishes and classic cocktails with an exotic twist. Lao cuisine leverages tropical herbs and cooking techniques of Southeast Asia. However, the flavor profile is distinct from its fellow SE Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Dishes like Naem Khao (Crispy Rice Salad), Sai Oua (lemongrass pork sausage), Laab, and Tam Muk Houng (Lao papaya salad) at Thip Khao showcase the unique flavors of Laos. Many dishes are served with sticky rice. Chef Seng recommends eating sticky rice with your hands as most Laotians do. Since its opening, the restaurant has been well received by Washingtonians and critics alike. The restaurant has had national recognition from multiple publications including New York Times, Washington Post, Bon Apetit magazine, Washingtonian magazine, and Michelin Guide (Bib Gourmand).

The food was wonderful - Laab with duck, Khao Piak Sen w/shrimp, Kee Mao Beef. And they were very accommodating to one diner with a range of food intolerances.

We had a marvelous dinner at Thip Khao last night -- our first time there, but surely not our last. The food was unusual, creative, and delicious. Lots of new tastes and interesting combinations. Service was fine. The place was noisy but not so loud that talk was a problem. We will definitely be back, the only question is when.

Used to be our favorite restaurant in the area. food and service has fallen off since it has gotten so popular. Still great to check out if you have never had Lao food!

TK is a consistent restaurant that focuses on the right things for me: food flavor and portion size. The quality of the food experience is consistent and they have been delivering an enjoyable dining experience for many years. The noise level can be a bit high at peak times, so be prepared to lean in on your conversations.

We were celebrating an important graduation with family. Food was very good to excellent (special shoutout for the Moak); cocktails were also good. The lone disappointment was the noise level. Please turn down the music, friends!

If you have never sampled Laotian food previously, what are you waiting for? Hard to turn down much on the menu. Our server was very helpful navigating the various levels of spice and heat. The room is "loud" on a Saturday night, but not unbearable. Thip Khao is worth your visit to sample some amazing tastes.

Fantastic Laotian food on a mediocre venue. The menu was diverse and adventurous but the atmosphere was lacking. You can’t beat the price though. I will return!
