About this restaurant

  • Great for scenic views
  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
North Carolina native, award-winning chef, and New York Times best-selling author Vivian Howard will introduce her latest culinary concept, Theodosia, at The Sanderling Resort, slated to open Memorial Day weekend. Every element of this new dining destination will reflect the culture and history of the Outer Banks, creating a connection to a distinctive place and time.

Named for Theodosia Burr—daughter of the infamous Aaron Burr, wife of South Carolina Governor Joseph Alston, and the subject of centuries-old folklore about a ship lost at sea near the Outer Banks—Theodosia will evoke mystery and intrigue. The waterfront setting invites guests to ponder her fate as she journeyed from SC to NY in the early 19th century.

The dining room will feature rich, feminine textures, soft lighting, and views of the Currituck Sound’s endless horizon. The menu will celebrate the region’s salt marshes and fishing heritage, blending tradition with Howard’s signature innovative Southern cuisine.

Space was beautiful. Ny Strip was delicious. The other food was nothing special and the papardelle was inedible.

Loved the place, food was very good and cost was inline with comparable restaurants. I had the the crab and zucchini pasta. Light and interesting flavor and was very good. My wife had the steak and potato and it was well prepared and flavorful. My son has Tile fish Gumbo and he said it was very good but in hindsight he would have added a salad. We ordered cheder cheese rolls without apples and they also were very good. Look forward to going again in the near future.

On a coast scattered with mediocre seafood buffets, cheap drinks, and cheeseburgers this place is a foodie oasis! Charming ambiance, with the kind of quiet yet elegant service you might expect in Charleston or Savannah. I ordered the Black Drum Toast on the menu only to find out that it was replaced with the “just in” Sheep’s Head. This was such a simple preparation and served over a bean filled beurre blanc but I’ll be dreaming about this dish for a long while. The grouper ceviche with strawberries, the clam chowder with soft shell crab nuggets, and the pork belly porchetta were all uniquely special too. Thinking about going back tonight to try the tilefish or the blueberry bbq duck. Sitting at the chef’s counter was a special treat!

We were celebrating and happy, arrived on time for reservation. Waited an hour with only warm water but enjoyed reading the creative menu. The cocktails were refreshing. Another long wait to order so we asked for apps and entrees at the same time, the cocktails long gone before the apps arrived, the oysters were small and warm but the other seafood delicious. One incorrect entree arrived and the correction took a long time and made us uncomfortable either letting the food get cold or eating in front of one of the group. The wait person was embarrassed and offered a dessert to compensate but never asked about the meals, never asked about wine with the entrees only more cocktails. The restaurant was full and noisy, rather hectic feeling and in the end a disappointment. Staff is not up to the same level as the venue's hype.

Our waiter was more concerned about the quality of his serving technique than he was about the actual service. We had to wait 15 minutes for our bottle of wine to arrive (while the couple who sat down next to us received their cocktails and appetizers) and finally had to ask about it. He only stopped at our table once (at the end of our meal) to ask how the food was and to fill our wine glasses and did not clear our plates at the same time. Got the impression that he was new to serving and did not understand that its more about service than it is about holding your hand behind your back when pouring the wine or putting your plate on the table.

The food was great however, the portions were modest and seating was very tight leading to a loud dining experience

The build up and hype of the restaurant and acclaimed Chef did NOT live up to our expectations. Bar service to the dining room was extremely slow. One person’s entree was cold and did not match the menus description. Very limited wine selection. Our seating arrangement for 2 persons was not conducive to conversation. And the bench couches were not suitable or comfortable for dining-table to far away. We expected better value for the cost. We also listed it was our 49th anniversary, hoping it we would get a nice table, etc but being squeezed in between 2 couples on a bench seat was not quite the “49th Anniversary”dinner we were expecting.

Dinner June 11, 2025 Atmosphere, view and service was amazing. A few small issues I will mention just because I feel places can’t grow if we only highlight the positives. We sat at a table for 2 that one side was bench style seating and the other was chairs. On one side of us was a 2 top the other side was a 4 top. We were facing the kitchen (just to give reference). It felt very crowed and a bit uncomfortable being so close to other people. One couple who sat at the 2 top asked to be moved because they were so close and a group at the other table commented about how it’s a bit crowded in that area. Maybe do 3 two tops there to give a little space would be my suggestion. As for the food everything we had was amazing in flavor and preparedness. I will say the menu can be a little confusing the first time as the server didn’t explain things to us so we was surprised when we ordered 1 cheese curd and it was 1 small bite of a thing (not shareable). Thankfully we also got the shrimp 2 ways it was so good perfectly cooked and the shrimp ball/dip was amazing. The wife had tomato pie She shared 1 bite and it was amazing and a must have. I had The Duck entree it was fabulous and went well with the cabbage and beans. However my cut of Duck was a little fatty and tough (no complaints as I know it can happen with Duck). The chocolate cake looked dry from the start. It had an ok flavor but it was as dry as it looked. Not worth it at all definitely the worst item of the night. Now that Figgy Sticky pudding I wanna go back and get that today it was so good. The drinks were top notch and remained consistent all night, Great job bartender you guys and gals never get enough credit in these kinda places. Overall was a great experience and we have already booked our next reservation. For 2 weeks!

Food and ambience were exceptional. The architecture, decor and three-story west facing windows with view of sound combine for stellar atmosphere. The one negative is having two-top tables packed too closely together so that there is no privacy with elbows to elbows. Food was creative and exquisite flavor. Could not have been better. For service, I give them benefit of the doubt in being open only two weeks, which I hope was basis of being badly under staffed. The wait person was great, but two people were covering packed dining room with one support person and some help from hostess. There was long wait to take drinks/appetizer order and longer wait to take entree order. And another long wait for dessert/check. As noted, the wait person was working her heart out, but should not have been so pressed. Once orders taken, food arrived rather quickly, so problem wasn’t the kitchen or the bar. We ate the night before at the sister restaurant across the street where there was ample help, so problem wasn’t local labor market. Overall, restaurant is lovely and we highly recommend, but the service labor must be corrected or rating goes to 3 very quickly.
