About this restaurant

  • Great for scenic views
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
North Carolina native, award-winning chef, and New York Times best-selling author Vivian Howard opened her latest culinary concept, Theodosia, at The Sanderling Resort! Every element of this new dining destination will reflect the culture and history of the Outer Banks, creating a connection to a distinctive place and time.

Named for Theodosia Burr—daughter of the infamous Aaron Burr, wife of South Carolina Governor Joseph Alston, and the subject of centuries-old folklore about a ship lost at sea near the Outer Banks—Theodosia will evoke mystery and intrigue. The waterfront setting invites guests to ponder her fate as she journeyed from SC to NY in the early 19th century.

The dining room features rich, feminine textures, soft lighting, and views of the Currituck Sound’s endless horizon. The menu celebrates the region’s salt marshes and fishing heritage, blending tradition with Howard’s signature innovative Southern cuisine.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Theodosia offers a "wonderful coastal dining experience" with a "gorgeous setting" and "exceptional flavors." The atmosphere is elegant with a "beautiful view" of the water. While some dishes receive mixed reviews, the ceviche and tomato pie are standout choices. Service shows promise, though improvements in timing are noted.

Food was great. The service was what was lacking. Reservation for 8PM, but not seated until 8:40PM. Servicer was extremely polite and professional, but it took over 2 hours to get our mains. Food is worth the wait, but know that you will have a wait.

This newest of Vivian Howard's efforts offers fabulous views of the Currituck sound, ambience that suits the location and culinary offerings primarily of local seafood , and staff that go out of their way to make the customers happy. My husband and I had out first "taste" of The Theodosia experience recently and were not disappointed. The Tomato pie is not to be missed.

Growing pains with reservation system and seating on time....but, well worth the wait. Tuna Tartar, Tile Fish and Pork Belly were all 9/10. Lemon Pie 10/10.

The food was good but the ambiance was terrible! The busy patterns of the upholstery fabrics, draperies and wallpaper were definitely not beachy. The tables for two were entirely too close together, making it difficult for the wait staff to move in to serve. And we were too close to the people’s conversations on either side of us. The seats were too low in relation to the table height. And all the members of the staff we interacted with were not friendly. All in all, we would not go back there.

Everything we had was amazing. Went with the waiter’s recommendations and the food did not disappoint. We saw a lot of negative reviews before we went, but everything we experienced was excellent.

The two of us sat at a table that was only 6 inches from another table in a row of two tops that were only 6 inches between each table throughout. We couldn’t get into our seat without actually placing our buttocks on the table beside us. I’m a small woman and I still could not get through there without rubbing my bottom on the other table. We asked to be seated at another table and there were no place for us to be moved to so we left without eating at all and went a block away to the paper canoe restaurant and had a delightful dinner with good atmosphere and great food. After driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic from Killdevil Hills to duck just eat in that restaurant, I have to say Theodosia was a complete and utter disappointment. It appears to more interested in turning a profit by pushing as many people into one room as possible, and turning tables quickly instead of offering a great experience it’s a shame. I certainly didn’t want to eat a meal from this. Holly regarded chef.

Went for a b-day & anniversary celebration and it was worth the hype! The service was excellent and the food was amazing. We tried a variety of plates (two fish dishes, shrimp and grits, steak, tomato pie…) and the unique pairings were even a hit with our teenage sons! Will definitely return! *I will say it was a little warm in the restaurant, but it was upper 90’s outside. That’s my only “complaint”. We even saw Vivian roaming the tables :)

This is a wonderful addition to the Outer Banks restaurants. The food was excellent with reasonable size portions. Theodosia servers were knowledgeable, attentive and always available. The view is incredible, and the wine was excellent. The atmosphere is a bit more formal than many OBX restaurants, but not uptight. I will be back. Geoff
