My salad and gnocchi were good but a bit pricey. The ambience is great and a bit noisy.

We love dining here. Wonderful atmosphere, food and service. The rotisserie chicken is prepared better here than anywhere in New York. Sitting in the back room is cozy and quiet. Congratulations to Michael and all those who had a hand in paying tribute to Elaine's while updating the experience.

Their Parker House Rolls are one of my favorite things in the world -- thanks for bringing them back!!! Unfortunately the Caesar salad was probably the worst I've ever had. Tiny and tasteless, to charge $13 for this salad they should really be ashamed of themselves. Everything else (chicken parm, meatballs & spaghetti) was good as usual. Not spectacular, but good. There should be some less expensive side salad options to go with an entree. Again, if it had cost $6 the Caesar would have been bland-but-passable; but for $13, I am actually considering not going back there again. Except for those incredible Parker House Rolls. Maybe next time we'll just have an order of rolls ($5 by the way; they used to be included) and a drink, and then go elsewhere for our entrée.

Way overpriced for only average food. Small portions on starters and salads. Filet Mignon not very tasty or thick. Fried chicken no flavor or spices. Needs a lot of improvement .

Nice space but food and service don't deliver. Ordered fish that came with roasted potatoes.
The potatoes came out literally burnt. Had to call waiter over to explain. How could the chef allow that plate out of the kitchen to be served? Basic salad had way too much lemon in the dressing. Our waiter was good, but read about terrible service online

I enjoy the atmosphere here. It's lively and the staff and clientele are friendly. Our meal was pleasant and our waiter was attentive without being overbearing. It's a great neighborhood establishment in Yorkville.

Asked for quiet table. Was advised would do then put us in back room with only one other couple. Within 30 min a party of about 15-20 was seated and others. Noise became unbearable.
We ordered 3 items saying whih should come first--then they delivered the main course first instead. Their site was recommended for best ribs and the only rib dish was an appetizer. We ordered 2 orders--both came very fatty and 1 portion had 4 ribs and the other only 2. Continually had look for the server and twice had to go to front of restaurant in order to get someone to come to the table. I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN A REVIEW ON A RESTAURANT BEFORE SO THIS MUST HAVE BEEN PRETTY BAD TO GET ME TO REPLY TO YOUR REQUEST TO WRITE A REVIEW

The food was really terrible. The banana bread had no flavor, and the avocado toast tasted like it was from a freezer - totally bland and they added very weird seasoning to the avocado. The service was awful. It took 4 requests to get our banana bread, which we ordered first (to which we found out the waitress had never put it in, even though she was snippy and annoyed at us for asking for it multiple times. My friend who came a few minutes late had to ask 4 different people for water, and did not get anything for 15 minutes. It was a shame because the decor and vibe was great.

Exceptionally slow service. Even when asked for an item and reminded, it took them 20 minutes to bring. Food was bland, in addition. I have never written a bad restaurant review before. I felt this was bad enough to merit it.

Been to this restaurant several times and hoped it would be a neighborhood gem. The service was never out of this world but the food and ambience has deteriorated. Here's our latest dinner experience:

Inattentive service - We only saw our waitress when she came to bring the drink menu, take our order and when we finally got her attention to bring the check. We tried multiple times to order more drinks but she was either chatting with a colleague or focused on closing out checks. She never looked at our table to see how the food was or if we needed anything else. The best service came from the bus persons. Very friendly and professional. We normally leave 20% tips but left closer to 15% due to the waitress' very poor service. Would have left less if it weren't for the bus persons.

Food - Pork chops ($36) had no flavor and carbonara ($23) came with an overcooked egg; one that looked like it should come with a Cobb salad. Carbonara had more flavor than the pork chops but not ones that typically come with the dish - it was mostly sweet with hints of vinegar. I guess they tried to cut the sweetness. As noted by a previous reviewer, we were also not provided with a steak knife for the pork chops. Cocktails were nicely presented and standard.

Ambience - This place is called the writing room which evokes a more peaceful setting. They even have a library room in the back. However, the place was very loud from people watching the baseball game in the bar area and the music. There was also a TV in the dining area. It just seems this restaurant doesn't know what it wants to be - a writing room, an elegant dining room or an expensive sports bar? It didn't do any of those things well.

Sadly disappointing from the dirty water glass and un-fizzy sparkling water to the strikingly bad Ceasar salad (lettuce seemed aged -- unlike the parmesan cheese which was not shaved but more likely Kraft grated) and way overcooked (blackened as in burnt) potatoes that were more fitting for a greasy spoon diner at breakfast than accompanying my fish entree. The apps were fine: the meatball sliders and beet salad were unfortunately the highlights of the night. Unlikely we'll make a return visit.

The service was horrendous. Took about 15 minutes before we even got a menu (usually, isn't the host who seats you supposed to hand you a menu?). Had to use a butter knife to try and cut duck (which is usually cut with a sharper knife) because the waitress never came back around. The duck was sliced abnormally thick, so a knife was necessary. They didn't take the appetizer dish off of our table until after we were finished with entrees. Me and the other person in my party had to share half of a glass of water during the meal because his never got refilled until the end. The food was tasty but overpriced (think $27 for fried chicken, lol!). Would be worth the price if it were a good service experience at the very least.

Excellant service and when I told them it was our anniversary they brought over two glasses of champagne! and it was good champagne !! not crappy...service was great and food was very good. Menu was a bit limited, but they let me change a few things around to make me happy. Great ambience. Lots of seating and different rooms.

Great food, good wine list and plenty of beer choices. “Fun” menu with unexpected dishes. Pretentious, but efficient, wait staff. The round leather booths were great for our twosome - but would been real tight with four or more! We will go again - just hoping at least one employee smiles next time.

Overall the restaurant gives the impression of a well-oiled machine and has the look/feel of an upscale restaurant at reasonable prices. I have been there 4 times and the thing i noticed is their inability to get your meal completely right. A+ for effort!! i.e: if i order toast with my lunch, bring it with my food. don't make me ask for it. and then when you bring it, bring butter and jam along. How many times must I ask for a coffee refill when we are the only 2 top in the section.

Brunch was difficult for different reasons. My friend ordered things ala carte (allergies) and i ordered a main. our food came out late because it wasn't cooked in order - my food sat and got cold on the line while hers was being prepared. (told by waiter - exact words). cold eggs benedict are not good for my brunch.

At dinner on a summer friday, the $9 ice cream (3 scoops) came in hot ramekins, and was 1/2 melted before it hit the table. I mentioned it to the waiter who put the warm dishes on his tray and wondered if anyone realized a food that melts doesn't go in a dish fresh from the dishwasher - keep the bowls in the freezer. if there aren't enough order more. Where is the dessert chef? Who controls the kitchen side? The server should have also realized it. I spoke to the waiter and he said he would talk to the kitchen staff to let them know for the future. Not a very satisfactory reply. When he dropped the check he comped the ice cream which was really nice. It would have been better if it was his response from the beginning. Or simply bring out more ice cream. If i had to pay for the ice cream, I would not have returned again.

No restaurant is perfect. This one seems to have service and uneven food quality issues. They offered gift cards to come back and try it again. I declined. But I have returned only to find the same problems still exist, a year later. that's never a good sign. it's pretty, affordable and fun but don't expect miracles.

We had enjoyed a delicious Sunday lunch at The Writing Room so we came to dinner with high expectations. But where my husband's house-cured salmon and my homemade pasta were unusually flavorful, our chicken dishes at dinner were both over cooked. We took home our unfinished fried chicken and chicken Parmesan, but no ones rushing to eat the leftovers

Found this place as part of NYC restaurant week and it did not disappoint. Cozy ambiance and seating with nice decor and wonderful service. Restaurant week menu had many choices and better than most pre fixe. You could choose 3 dishes total from any categories with apps, entrees, desserts and wine/beer. We opted for the BBQ ribs and duck risotto for apps; the risotto was out of this world. For dinner, we got the salmon and fried chicken. The salmon could use a tad more seasoning, but the fried chicken was crispy and had a large portion size to boot. For dessert we got the chocolate mousse and cheesecake, both left a little to be desired but overall good. We also opted for a bottle of Riesling which was delicious. Overall, a pleasant experience I would recommend!

We had brunch with friends at the restaurant. There was just the right atmosphere: not formal but also not overly casual. Choices for brunch were quite good, though I thought the preparation was not outstanding. Service was responsive and attentive. We were not hurried ( friends getting together tend to linger a bit), but we were given the check before we requested it. I'm not certain what I think of that.
