Crowded for Sunday Brunch, but everyone really loved their dishes. So glad we made reservations the day before. Recommend the Prosecco bottle service!
Good food, but noisy .
I’ve been here twice and the experience was very different. Food and drink were very good first time. So I brought friends! Cocktails AND food were erratic . Chopped salad was sad and wilted. Only thing consistently good was the staff !! Very helpful, no attitude, very much tried to get things right for us. Third time the charm?
Love this restaurant. Delicious food and wine. Excellent service.
Good, dependable food and great service.
We had the most wonderful server. Food was great! Came out in a good time. Overall a wonderful and delightful dinner!
First time visit and was so happy with everything! Wonderful place and staff.
Loved the atmosphere! This restaurant is beautiful and just so comfortable.
The cleanliness was unbelievable. I actually have never been in a restaurant that was this clean
Food was delicious but, portions were small compared to prices.
Food was great but prices are too much at a place like this
Great food. Not the best service. Cool room.
Typical stuffy UES place. Food is overpriced and quite ordinary. Decent cocktails. Nice ambiance with mementos from Elaine's.
Nice atmosphere. Not too noisy. Private rooms for parties. Food was good but portuins on the small side.
Excellent as always.
Fun setting good food
wonderful neighborhood restaurant we eat here often
Lively casual restaurant with really good food. Creative preparation with great flavor. Service was good as well. Pricing what you would expect for NYC.
Nice Ambience. Food is uneven. Simple grilled steak and burger are fine. Swordfish is 3 tiny medallions served in a tomatoey slush. This is an appetizer size meal, and not good. The onion soup is mostly bread. Stick with the simple
We used to eat there quite a bit when we lived in the area and very much enjoyed the meals. We were looking forward to another great meal, but alas, that was not to be had. Not a single dish was good except for the appetizer special. Service was meh, too. It’s a shame because it really was a gem.
We were seated in the back by the fireplace and it was a perfect ambience for being able to see and hear the other person.
Every time I go to the Writing Room I am always happy with the jovial, attentive servers and excellent food. A great choice for any meal, large of small...but I especially love the bar for a game! But the best news is, they have added steaks to the menu and I LOVE STEAK!
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday for brunch. On the open table reservation I requested for us to be seated by the book shelf in the study room. I was talking up this restaurant to my boyfriend and how unique the ambiance is because we’re both into books and writing, so I knew he’d love it. We arrived and were taken to a seat that was not in the study. My bf looked at me and was unimpressed because it was not as grand as I originally had described to him. We asked the waitress to change seats into the other room which we had no problem switching to and she was very nice about it. The food was exceptional and I had the best grilled chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. My bf loved the pancakes he ordered and the ambiance of the study room. If the host would’ve brought us to the area we wanted to be seated to begin with I believe the experience would’ve been better as I had requested it in the open table application.
Food average at best. And that’s being generous. Not worth the money.
The restaurant was crowded and noisy. Food was mediocre and when the bill arrived we were charged double! Of course they were apologetic and made the corrections.
I enjoyed my second date there and will definitely try it again a third time just to make sure that I am really inlove with this restaurant. The service is exceptionally good and it's the no. 1 reason why I am going to go back.
We enjoyed the space and our servers were attentive & responsive. The food just was not tasty- just not fulfilling. We may come again b cuz location is convenient for us to travel. Staff were accomodating.
Ashley our server was outstanding. It was a wonderful experience to have a nice dinner in such an iconic location. Hope to go there again.
Website and Times review before the restaurant opened a couple of years ago, very, very misleading. Looks cozy and a good place for good food and talk; the former okay but the latter, impossible. My friend and I there at 6:30 and it was crowded, too many tables in too little space, attentive staff but not all with good English which, had the decibel level been manageable wouldn't have mattered but we all had to scream at each other throughout our time at the restaurant. I would never go back. Don't know what Elaine's was like but presume her clientele was prepared; we were not. Writers' Room, despite some pretensions including a faux cozy backroom nook for dinner or drinks, is a glorified burger joint with a few menu exceptions. Very sad; could have been so much more, and better.
Very enjoyable to return to the former Elaine's.... very very much changed (for the better) -- The NY cheese cake was very good but if you are calling it a NY cheesecake you have to give a much larger slice... it was very good and we ate it all.
Our service was great & our food came in a timely manner. Food was good. Music was good and at a perfect volume. Definetly will return
We decided to try this for restaurant week and was not expecting much because of that. The waitstaff couldn't be nicer. The food was excellent. And I loved the photos all over and the general feel of the place. Was a great neighborhood place. A good tourist place and definitely a place I look forward to returning to.
We went to The Writing Room during the 2018 Winter Restaurant Week. I had mussels for appetizer and my wife had the ribs. Mussels were amazing! They were drenched in a buttery sauce that was quite delicious. The ribs were pretty good too, but not amazing.
For our main course, I had the roasted chicken and my wife had the fried chicken. The fried chicken was perfect texture-wise, not to oily and very crispy. Unfortunately, it was sort of bland in taste. The roasted chicken, on the other hand is PACKED with flavor. It is VERY good. You MUST get this dish when you come here.
Dessert was the biggest disappointment of the evening. We both got the brownies a la mode, which were bland and hard. We only took two bites and decided not to eat anymore.
The ambiance/decor at The Writing Room is fantastic. Readers/book worms would love it!
cold food, empty glasses, slow service = an overall terrible experience
Though there was plenty to like about the food & service, the atmosphere was not the way the photos portrayed the space. The back room with the books & old tiles was too small for more tables & the rest of the restaurant though nice looking was nothing special. Music was too loud.
I had read this was a really cozy restaurant. It certainly was! The ambiance was wonderful, but the food was just okay and the waitress barely checked on us. I would still recommend it for the atmosphere though!
I decide to try this spot during Restaurant week and I've never been more pleased with a find during restaurant week.
I already booked my second reservation because I have to introduce some of my other friends to this place. Their ribs, salmon, dessert, cornbread are rewarding. I wasn't a big fan of their fried chicken and my boyfriend didn't like their lamb but it wasn't cooked crispy on the outside but the manager made sure to listen to our review and removed that dish from our menu.
Overall, the service was the best part of the experience and is primarily the reason why I'm going back so soon.
It was our first visit to this restaurant but it won't be our last. We all loved our dinners and our waitress (Meredith) was wonderful. We were there during restaurant week and the choices offered were varied and pleased everyone. Overall a great evening
Picked this restaurant for a friend's 50th birthday dinner with 2 other friends. The birthday girl is a writer so we thought the theme was perfect. The ambiance is cool, the birthday girl wanted to go around looking at all the pics but the space is a little tight so we'd be intrusive to other tables of we had. We were all amused by the wall of circulation card drawers (they don't actually open, we tried). The food turned out to all be good which was great - we were worried that it would all be as bland and tasteless as the rationed bread they took forever to bring us. The day we went was the 4th day of winter restaurant week so perhaps that why the service left a lot to be desired: we didn't see our waitress again after our entrees were delivered. Overall, am ok experience.
Food is very good from the bread, to apps and entrees. I thought the decor look very cool on the pictures online but it does not look quite as displayed inside. My girlfriend loves the full bookcase look but that did disappoint when it was not actually there. Overall well worth the trip to the upper east side.
The food was stale and full of salt. The servers werent the nicest.
