The Wine Library
Inspired by a typical cellar visit to growers in France where, after tasting, you are offered local cheeses and a hunk of pâté served with a baguette on an up-turned barrel and more wine! What more could you want. For our version we try and source the very best products using our connections in France, the finest farm house cheeses from Philippe Olivier in Boulogne, possibly one of the best cheese shops on the Planet! Game terrines, pâtés, rillettes and saucissons from the Loire Valley; award winning hams from Dorset and organic vegetarian quiches from Devon; along with some homemade seafood pates, vegetarian mousses or houmous served with crusty bread and biscuits. With this you get the added pleasure of choosing your wine from the carefully selected range in our cellar shop to go with it paying just a small corkage charge on top of the shop price.
We finished off three different and very nice bottles of Rioja between two of us. The help yourself meats and cheese complimented it perfectly. Nice to chat to the owner who has been there since 1988.
It’s a city classic and a perfect hideaway. I love the fact it has not changed in 20years.
Always a warm welcome and great advice on wines; lovely simple food. Just the ticket. In a different league from the typical "wine bar"
Fairly unique spot in the City and an excellent venue to catch up one on one or in a small group in what is a relaxed and informal setting. Food is simple but excellent quality and a decent selection of good wine at reasonable prices.
A wonderful range of wines sold at shop (rather than restaurant) prices (+ a little corkage) with an excellent (but limited) array of cold dishes (pates, cheeses antipasti etc). I've been going there for over 20 years. The wines are not supermarket plonk -- all well-chosen bottles from mainly smaller growers.
Great food, excellent wines. Ambient setting. Would highly recommend it.
Great experience for all wine and cheese lovers. A plentiful choice of wines that are reasonably priced but bears little resemblance to the final bill.
Simply the best wine location in The City
Reliable for good wine and lunch buffet every time.
The Wine Shop is absolutely excellent, great expertise and knowledge, beautifully laid out and accessible.
The food, while pleasant, was rather disappointing. A buffet of dried meats, pate and cheese all of reasonable standard, but for £18.50 per head did not really represent good value for money. A cheese platter to accompany wine, yes, a meal, unfortunately no.
As always a very enjoyable visit - the wines that we had were perfect and outstanding value whilst the food was classically French and abundant.
Amazing place! Wonderful staff and the best experience!
Great experience, browsing to choose your wine and then sitting in the vaulted cellar to enjoy it whilst snacking on a buffet of cheese, meats and salad.
The perfect bolt hole for that discerning wine enthusiast
A lovely experience
Great place in the City to drink good wine at very reasonable prices.
Great atmosphere food and wine. A really unique experience
An exceptional little place, very cosy lower ground wine bar, superb wines and delicious cheese and meats.
One of our very favourite places to while away an afternoon. Super, and well priced, wines and a tasty buffet spread. Just lovely!
Great, as always! The food is more than adequate and the wine even better than the food!
First time back for 15 years and the concept was as good as then! Excellent buffet of French meats and cheeses and a wonderful selection of wine at a sensible price. Genuinely a fine and authentic establishment.
This is still a relatively unfound gem of a place, pairing numerous wines with some seriously tasty, if simple, pate and cheese. Worth booking to make sure of space.
Amazing range of fine wines selected by proprietor Peter and decanted where appropriate. Fresh glasses with each additional bottle. Excellent cheeses from Phillipe Olivier in Boulogne plus various pâtés cold meats and quiches provided at a fixed cost per head. Interesting cellar location near Tower Hill. Bottles displayed in shelves, chosen by customer and priced as retail plus corkage which means fine wines are relatively affordable.
The perfect formula for a wine bar. Great selection of wine, cheese from Philippe Olivier in Boulogne and an interesting selection of pâtés and meats. In depth advice on the wines when requested. Red wines decanted where appropriate.
Ideal for sharing a bottle. Pick any wine in the shop (many to choose from) and pay a corkage fee. Small cheese, pate, crackers, salad, and quiche buffet enough for a light lunch or snack. Cozy atmosphere close to Tower of London.
I revisited the library after an absence of 20 years .
Wine continues to be great value as is the concept ..But cost of food (still just cheese and cold meats with bread) removes the bouquet for the occasion
The best place around for a quiet, informal lunch with excellent & respectably priced wine to choose from the shelf!
Unique, quirky wine cellar where the focus is squarely on the wine. Choose a bottle from a wonderful range of wines from around the world, but especially France, and enjoy it in the small bar area. The food is very simple: cheese, pate, quiche and salad. It’s there to accompany the wine and perfectly fine but not the reason to go to this hidden gem. Low key, knowledgeable and friendly atmosphere We love this place.
The staff / owner were very knowledgeable and helped us choose a suitable bottle of wine form the vast choice in the "library". The lunch was buffet style and the cheese and pate selection good but the biscuits and bread were very ordinary. We liked the informality and the buzz of the place and felt it was good value for money. We would certainly return.
We were a party of four and enjoyed this place very much. A place for silent talk, perfect wine selection and a splendid buffet. The service was excellent. Thank you.
Just never disappoints. Good buffet spread, great wine choice, and relaxed friendly atmosphere. Perfect for a lunchtime catch up with friends
Always a total pleasure to visit the Wine Library. Lovely grazing buffet lunch and a superb choice of well priced wines in a friendly relaxed hideaway right in Tower Hill. We've been many times and will be back many times too.
A REAL CITY INSTITUTION simply the best wine list in london - You choose or ask peter to recommend abd pay wine merchant prices plus cockage and treat yourself to some pate and cheese of which you wont taste in london
I always enjoy coming here with friends and this visit was no exception - thank you
This is a great spot with a wonderful selection of wines from around the world. Choose your wine and then enjoy it with a nice little buffet including quiche, pate, cheeses, sliced meats and a variety of breads and crackers. This is a great place to spend an afternoon chatting with friends or your special someone. It's small, intimate and thoroughly enjoyable.
The Wine Library continues to serve up what it's always done. High quality wines at a price you won't find at any other restaurant, with a rustic style buffet of pates, cheeses, hams and salamis. I've never had a bad time here, staff are really friendly and knowledgeable about the wines if you need recommendations. It's not a place for a flashy business lunch, but as a little-known oasis of calm to enjoy good wine and food with a couple of chums it's unbeatable.
Wonderful for a little lunch over Wine! The wine choice was splendid and the food delicious - what is not to love
This is one of our real favourites, and we keep going back for more. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, delicious buffet salad lunch, and a fabulous selection of varied and reasonably priced wines from around the world. Terrific!
I haven't been for ages and had forgotten how different the Wine Library is. Very reasonable price wise and fund to discuss the wine. Food ideal for that environment and a friendly and helpful team.
An excellent venue for competitively priced good wine + excellent cheese/pâté buffet!
