Outstanding all the way around!!!
Magic ambience, and good food. I suggest to do the champagne tour.
Gorgeous restored mansion right in the middle of downtown Detroit. We had brunch, the food was lavish and wait staff charming. I would definitely return for dinner but bear in mind The Whitney is quite pricey
It was my husband and daughters birthday the staff and the manager was amazing!!! The food was amazing and they even made a cake and special menus for their birthdays! This is my go to place for any special event. And we can’t wait to return.
My husband and I enjoyed a romantic dinner at The Whitney to celebrate his birthday. He ordered the Seafood Saute and said it was one of the top 5 meals he's ever eaten! I had the Beef Wellington and that was also superb. If you have extra time, I'd highly recommend the mansion tour. Jim gave us a great amount of history on the mansion in a relatively short amount of time. We will definitely be back!
We always enjoy this place, food & wine are great. Love that the historical house was repurposed!
We are very gratified and proud that The Whitney is such an outstanding restaurant. We very much appreciate that our dining experience was enjoyable and fulfilling. The fare was delicious and filling, better than that of another restaurant we visited a week previous in the suburbs.
Cauliflower steak was not cooked enough and had very little flavor.
A wonderful dinning experience in a beautiful mansion. By far one of the best places to eat in Detroit. The food was phenomenal and the service was top of the line. Very comfortable seating and just wonderful ambiance overall. I highly recommend. It is quite pricey but it's worth it.
Outstanding atmosphere, food and service. Be sure to get there early enough to go upstairs to Ghost Bar to have a drink before having dinner.
My wife and I came here for the first time to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Christopher took beyond great care of us. He provided excellent recommendations and even reserved us seats upstairs for dessert. Dinner was delicious and so were the drinks. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of, was the dessert. I wished we had stayed downstairs with Christopher and had it there. They were very busy upstairs and the dessert was just ok. We will for sure be back though!
The Whitney was amazing. The service was impeccable, the food was outstanding and the ghost bar was just really fun!!! Try the duck breast, you won't be disappointed.
Birthday dinner... great seating. Thanks so much for the candle (nice touch!).
The most beautiful dining setting with excellent food. The best beef wellington in town. Great service in a very romantic setting. First class every time.
I took my soon to be wife out for her dinner. The staff on the first floor was amazing. Food was some of the best we have had.
It’s always a great time at the Whitney, brought the whole family they loved it.
Went for my birthday inside the Woodward Room. Even got my birthday dinner free🤗
Great brunch and great atmosphere
Beautiful, refined dining experience. The Whitney is simply magnificent from the piano playing in the background to the beautiful elegant decor. The service is very good, the wine selection is extensive and the food is fantastic. The lobster bisque is rich and delicious. The beef wellington is the best in the area complemented by an outstanding cognac sauce. Nothing compares!
Great service, great waiter, great food. Amazing time for my wife’s 30th birthday.
They didn’t have our reservation, but fortunately were able to squeeze us in. I asked for the Salmon, but the waiter thought I said same as her, so they gave me the wrong meal.
Great nice Christmas experience.
Restaurant was behind, but caught up. Beef Wellington was excellent but the Seafood Sauté disappointing. The dish consisted mostly of wild rice; the seafood was almost non-existent.
We enjoyed a romantic dinner with a seat near the window in the main drawing room with a view of the garden and Christmas lights. Everything came together for a great meal!
Beautiful building but save your money! Go anywhere else! I will speak honestly. They couldn’t find our reservation. The hostess did not know how to operate Open Table. She said she has never used it. The host was too busy talking to the piano man to greet us. Finding our seat was confusing for them. We were moved once seated. Our waitress was attentive but seemed flustered. Her energy was tiring. Her manager was lingering over her. He seemed crabby. We were seated next to an obnoxious party. They talked loud and were complaining the whole time. They seemed stuffy. Our food was average at best. My date enjoyed the bacon from my salad. That was the best part of the meal. It wasn’t exceptional by any measure. I had to ask for water twice. Our drinks weren’t expertly crafted. It was my dates birthday. I mentioned that to them a few times. They didn’t do anything special for us. The bill was rich. We left annoyed. I wish we never went.
The service was SUPER. Our server could not have been nicer. The food was excellent. We loved everything we ordered. The building is just beautiful. We said that we need to dine here more often.
I took my girlfriend there for her bachelorette party and we had such an amazing time!! I will be returning!! Great food, great service and such a beautiful place!!!
My father was in town and we chose the Whitney to celebrate his 75th birthday. Along was his wife and my wife and son. Neither my father nor I have there since 1991. The food and ambiance met expectations in every way. What stood out, though, were two pretty major deficiencies in the service. By policy they allow outside wine with a corkage fee, which is fine. I brought in a 2010 Caymus Special Selection Cab and a 2012 Nickel and Nickel Chardonnay. I asked the wait-person open both bottles and to please decant the Caymus. She promptly took the Caymus and marched into the kitchen. She came back with what I assumed to be my wine in a decanter. No bottle. No cork. No chance for a ceremonial taste. In my opinion, this was a gross breach of wine serving etiquette 101 and got us off on the wrong foot.
From there the service was merely adequate until we were invited to go to the third floor dessert room for bananas foster. Unbeknownst to us, the Whitney closes at 8pm on Sunday nights and the folks in the dessert room were clearly closing up shop at 7:50. We remarked that the staff downstairs suggested we come up for dessert and that we were looking forward to bananas foster. The comment back was something to the effect of..."we were about to leave, but I guess we could do it." Wow, thanks for the favor! Prior to the downstairs staff suggesting we go up for dessert, we were not even aware of the existence of this dessert room. Perhaps this is a pet peeve of mine, but the process of trying to close while still in theory serving diners is very off-putting. At a place like The Whitney, it should never happen. It's a back of house processes that no diner should ever see. We persevered and the bananas foster was spectacular.
So while I am ticking the Yes box for recommend to a friend, I am only doing so because anyone is entitled to a bad day and a singular experience may not accurately reflect reality. That said, up your game Whitney, many great places to eat in the D.
We went to celebrate a friend's birthday. I told them ahead of time and they made a personalized menu just for her and brought her a special dessert. The staff was amazing. The food was delicious, don't miss out on dessert. Each one was better then the next. The rooms were all beautiful and the garden was in full bloom. They have built up Woodward so nicely. It was a great morning out.
This wasn’t the Whitney I remember...fine dining service experience replaced by a friendly but not terribly professional server, my steak came medium well when it should have been medium rare. Took forever to get a new steak, at which point it was not quite rare. They took it back and put it back on to cook some more and took it off the bill - but at that point everyone else was done with their meal and I rushed to finish my steak so everyone else wouldn’t be held up. It just wasn’t special or memorable and we likely won’t return in spite of the fact that we had our wedding dinner there 16 years ago.
The Whitney made for a very nice anniversary dinner for me and my wife.
The staff was friendly and helpful, the setting was romantic, and the food was delicious.
Highly recommended if you have a special event or a special someone.
Wonderful experience. I would highly recommend a visit to the Whitney. We went for brunch and the food was delicious and the service was fantastic.
Went to the Whitney with a good friend and had a superb meal. However, this place is more of a "romantic" venue, with dim lighting and stunning decor.
The Whitney House is truly amazing. It is a great experience to be able to dine in such a beautifully restored landmark. The staff is engaging and focused on making the experience memorable. The Coconut Tomato soup and the Wedge Salad were great. However the entrees fell flat.
The Twin Lobster Tails were raw in the middle and the Beef Wellington was overdone and lacked any sign of foie gras.
A real disappointment as the accompaniments were well prepared. There was a miscommunication on the side potatoes and they arrived when the meal was 3/4 finished. Our server offered to redo but that just doesn’t work.
Free dessert was offered but by the mood was broken.
We were not there for practice. A weak link between the kitchen and the table. I hope the can fix it.
My wife recently had surgery and needed to use the elevator which was out of service. Was asked to pay a $5 cover charge to get in the 3rd floor bar prior to getting seated. Positive note... meal was outstanding, server provided fantastic service.
The place is very beautiful but the food and service are not outstanding. Food has a good quality, but for the price they charge I was really not impressed.
Excellent food great service great staff
Music in the garden was fabulous. Highly recommend
Excellent food and amazing service. The staff is so kind and we loved our meals. Great way to celebrate a birthday!!
Great setting for a restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was nothing special. It wasn't bad, but for the price and atmosphere, we were expecting more. I would not recommend to a friend for dinner. If I went back, I would just go for a drink and maybe appetizers in the 3rd floor Ghost Bar. Please note that the elevator is currently not in service. I would recommend having a drink and checking the mansion out.
