About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
The White Horse & Griffin has developed a reputation for great food served in a relaxed and unfussy style, using locally sourced ingredients. With an emphasis on fresh seafood, we pride ourselves on great service and value for money. Built in 1681 and with a history you can almost taste, you can dine in the very room where Captain Cook and William Scoresby used to raise and fix their crews!
The upstairs restaurant offers private dining and is ideal for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries or just getting groups of friends together.
Downstairs, our busy ‘bistro style’ restaurant serves many British classics in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
To accompany your meal we have a well-stocked wine cellar, many of which are available by the glass.

Excellent food - way above the other options in Whitby - I have no idea why this place is not higher in tripadvisor - I went to a couple of the others high on their website and they were no way as good as this place - excellent service and excellent food.

Usually wonderful and always excellent food but today we had to wait 35 minutes from taking the order to being served which was a bit long for fish n chips....that said, the fish pie was fantastic!!!!.... but a bit expensive....best I've ever had.

I felt overall the whole experience was nothing better than average. The food was ‘ok’, the staff were fairly disinterested and rude overall, they made it very clear we had to leave our table by a set time before we had even ordered, even though we had booked our table in advance and we were initially the only table occupied when we arrived. We were sat upstairs, which I don’t think has as nice atmosphere as downstairs. The roast beef… which was almost like stewing steak, was a bit odd. I probably wouldn’t recommend in honestly but maybe it was a bad day.
