About The Whistling Bird
The Whistling Bird in Gilbert, Minnesota might be in the Iron Range, but once you step inside, youll feel like youre in the Caribbean. There are umbrellas, wooden parrots, plenty of bright colors and strings of lights hanging from the walls and ceilings.
The menu at The Whistling Bird is similarly tropical. For an appetizer, you can have the fried plantains, chips with tropical fruit salsa, red curry mussels or the mahi mahi fingers. There are numerous Jamaican jerk dishes on the menu, too. You can choose chicken, mahi mahi, shrimp, pork tenderloin and more. One very popular option at The Whistling Bird is the lamb curry.

The Whistling Bird Ratings and Reviews
The service and the food were fantastic. I liked the decor and the general atmosphere of the restaurant. It seemed like a far better place and atmosphere for meeting friends than for an intimate dinner. The food and drink specials took me right back to the islands! Very authentic cuisine.
To find the ambiance and menu selections that I was accustomed to from living in Florida, in a restaurant here on the range, was impossible! Until I went to dine at The Whistling Bird in Gilbert.
What a nice surprise!
Although the establishment was small, the owners have done a nice job in arranging the inside so it does not feel crowded.
The decor is simple but plesant. Everything looks fresh and clean.
You will not find burgers on the menu but the choices will not let you down.
The prices are high but the food quality matches. This will have to be my special occasion place.
The only negative would be that we were seated at the one table directly across from the door, breezy cold when it was opened.
Reservations a must!
This was our first time here and everything was great. For starters, their specialty drinks were great, the food was absolutely fantastic, and our waitress was probably the best waitress we have had in such a long time. Hats off to this place, you will not be disappointed. We will be back soon!!
No matter what I order, it is always good! I'm not much of a steak eater but I got the New Years special. Steak and lobster tail. It was good but I should have known better lol. It's a place I always recommend! Friendly and yummy food!!! And a great drink selection!
This gem is worth the trip to Gilbert. We had 5 in our party and everyone ordered a different dish. All the meals looked appetizing and tasted great. The Noise level in the dining area is off the charts. The Food made up for the noise but if some acoustic tiles were added to the ceiling it would become a world class restaurant.
Really like the Whistling Bird for a special occasion dinner. Great service & great food. Loved my Rib eye steak. Noise level is a little annoying but the ambiance is nice, music fits the restaurant and had an overall good experience. Pumpkin soup Excellent.
We were told about the Whistling Bird from a local while vacationing in Biwabik. What a find! Great food, great decor, a unique and unforgettable experience. If you're vacationing in the area, skip pizza one night and opt for the Whistling Bird, kid friendly too. But also a great spot for a romantic dinner. What a place.
Food and service was excellent; had a very vibrant and energetic waitress that was attentive, making for another return visit at the "Bird".
Like the different selections and was pleased that the bread was moist and not the harder type rolls that were sometimes offered. We enjoy the "Bird" after we visit the Old Town Hall Antique Store to work up an appetite.
Everything was awesome except when making our reservation I told them it was my 19 year old's birthday and asked if they could do something and nothing was even brought up. I was willing to pay for it, I just wanted then to recognize her in some way. To make matters worse, while we were there a large group was seated right below us and they were celebrating someone's birthday too and they sang happy birthday to them and had a cake, which I'm sure someone brought with them. That is my only complaint. The place was great and the food was great the server was great but I would not bring someone there for a birthday again.
my wife and I have always looked forward to dining at the whistling bird and have never been disappointed with our food selections. we live about 50 miles away so do not make the trip too often but when we do it is worth the drive. on our most recent visit, with friends, we noticed that the alcoholic drinks that we ordered were certainly small for the amount that we were charged. I am willing to pay a fair price for a drink but please make it worthwhile. we'll be back for the good food but will be more careful in our drink selection.
Other than the 45 minute wait we had (with reservations). The food was excellent, the wait staff was awesome (the got all 13 orders correct), the ambiance was wonderful. I would recommend The Whistling Bird to everyone. I did not give it 5 stars because of the long wait
We enjoy going to the Whistling Bird because they are consistent.. My fave being Black and Bleu steak.. very good.. tender, and love the sauce.. Others had pork tenderloin and the linguine with lobster and shrimp.. They were delicious also, tho a few more chunks of lobster woulda been welcome!! Its a sweet little restaurant.. a little gem of a place in Gilbert Mn.. We go mostly for special occasions. The prices may seem high, but to get quality, you dont mind paying more..
My husband and I only get a few opportunities to get up to the area and every time we do, we treat ourselves to the outstanding food and ambiance. We recommend this resturant to all of our frieds, family and also business associates. The service was excellent and the way the staff made us feel special on our 20th anniversary was remarkable. Keep up the great work and we will keep filling our bellies.
Our neighbors had never been at the Whistling Bird and we hadn't been back since it re-opened. We were all happy with our visit this past week. I loved the coconut shrimp and others had jerk pork, Jambalaya, and seafood. Everyone was very happy with their selection. The service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a hurry. The online reservation center was easy to use! I loved the Miami vice cocktail.
Family (adult siblings, spouses, and parents) met from a variety of places (Iowa, Kentucky, Twin Cities, Grand Rapids, Africa) for a long weekend at Giants Ridge Resort, and we wanted a nice dinner to kick off the weekend; The Whistling Bird fit the bill perfectly! We had 13 people, and two waitresses served our group. There were a variety of tastes, but everyone was able to find a dish that they enjoyed (I had the jerked pork tenderloin and it was fabulous!). Using two servers helped ensure everyone got quick and responsive attention.
