We loved that the noise level was quiet. Low music that didn't intrude and quiet TV at the bar. That is really important to us when looking for a restaurant. This was our first visit but we go to Symphony Hall a lot and so we will be back because we can talk without it being an effort.

Imaginative American food. The burger was to die for and actually done medium rare (which is rare). Bacon and cheese pizza was delicious. Their take on the shareable calamari was very good without a thick batter. Good crab cakes.

My friend and I wanted to try Westland it got excellent reviews on WBZ 1030 am radio. It took some time to get us our drinks (shareable bubbles, great idea!) but it was busy so not a big worry. "Fluffy" donut was quite dense and tough, flavor ok. Poutine was good, not great. After we finished eating however, a mouse came out from under the tables (by then the dining room only had 3-4 parties in it we were the only ones that saw it. It was not at all people shy, ran in and about the tables then disappeared. We alerted several staff people all of whom were ultra-casual about mouse presence they knew about it and it was not a big deal. Clearly rodents are a big deal especially when seen in daytime in a restaurant.

The meatball appetizer came with toasted white bread. The toast was burnt black on the backside. Then they were out of eggplant at 6:00 the night of a show at symphony hall. I ordered a flatbread pizza that had crust that was also burnt black rendering the food inedible. . This food should not have been served.

We went before a Boston Pops performance. When we ordered, we did not receive a warning that the kitchen was "backed up" - we only found out after we asked where our food was...after waiting a little more than 20 minutes. We watched a couple a few tables over order after we did - looked like they ordered a series of apps vs entrees - and they got their food in a fraction of the time as us. Plate after plate after plate to their table as we sat waiting.

We didn't get our food for 30 minutes and we had to eat faster than we would have liked in order to make the performance. The issue apparently had been the with the fish I ordered, because when we did finally get our food, my fish was very hot but my husband's steak was luke warm as though it had been sitting in the window for a while.

Kitchens get backed up, and that's ok. But a little bit of warning would have been nice, so that we could have adjusted our orders, or at the very least adjusted our expectations.

This was my first visit to Westland. As a BSO subscriber and POPs fan I attend many concerts at
Symphony Hall and for over 20 years dined at Brasserie Jo (at the Colonnade) prior to performances. Since their closing late last year I have been looking for another location to dine that is convenient to the Hall.
I brought a friend to the opening Pops concert this past Wednesday (May 8th) and ate at Westland.
My first impression is that it's a bit dark inside (especially in the raised rear sections). After ordering cocktails it took quite a bit of time to receive them which I thought was strange since there were only about 2 or 3 occupied tables in the entire room, but the real disappointment were the drinks. My (rather small) cosmopolitan seemed devoid of vodka! Outside of that we very much enjoyed the appetizer (the calamari)
and entree. We both had the Beef Bourguignon which was delicious.
In closing the real complaint I have were the poor weak cocktails. Otherwise the food was great and the service good.

The Westland is right next to Symphony Hall, it's the only good non-asian restaurant in the neighborhood. The food is usually very good, the service however is slow. I recommend the beef bourgonon and the roast chicken.

We did not have a good experience from a service standpoint at all. We were seated promptly and ordered a drink from the waitress. We said we would order our food when we got our drink. Twenty minutes passed by and I did not get the drink. The waitress stopped to ask if we were ready to order and we said we wanted the drink. She looked at us and said “what drink?” As I looked to remind myself what I had ordered after this long passage of time, she did remember. However, i still didn’t get the drink. We finally asked the hostess to move to the bar where I did get the drink. The bartender was busy but attended to us right away and we had a very good meal, however, we were soured by our earlier experience. The initial waitress never apologized nor did she seem troubled at all that we had to move to get adequate service. Had we not a time constraint, we would have left and gone to the Asian restaurant next door where the food isn’t as good, but the service is prompt and courteous.

The place is attractive. The menu has a nice selection of food. The prices are too high for what the restaurant offers. Having to pay an extra $6 for a side is a sneaky way of raising prices. The Bourguignon was not remotely the real thing. Big chunks of brisket were not particularly tasty. Brisket is not the correct meat for this dish. The scallop dish was tiny and not enough food for an entree. The scallops were not cooked thoroughly and were chewy. They offer only 3 deserts and one of them was unavailable although our dinner was very early at 6 pm. They also don’t have expresó coffee.
Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Too bad because there aren’t any good restaurants near Symphony Hall.

We had the calamari appetizer. The breading on the calamari was very heavy which gave you a full feeling before the entree even came. We enjoyed the entrees. Our server seemed inexperienced but was pleasant and was trying. We’ll try it again.

We have been to this restaurant several times, the first time was in its first or second week. We subscribe to a series at Symphony Hall so it is very convenient. The decor has a very Boston feel with dark woods and leather. The service is great, except last time we came in at 5, the place was empty but we could not get a table...every one was reserved. I thought it unusual that there was not one table open for a walk-in. Last night I made a reservation so did not have a problem. The meatball appetizer was on the dry side and the sauce was very thick and dry as well. We had this before and it was better. The tomato soup with grilled cheese is very good. We’ve had it before and loved it. I’ve had the porchetta sandwich and thought it was just ok. Last night had the halibut over wilted spinach and “roasted root vegetables” - these were a teeny tiny dice...not really a side, more of a mirepoix. I wasn’t crazy about the turmeric sauce. We’ve had the banana foster bread pudding which is a delicious indulgence. Cocktails are nice.

Westland was amazing brunch! The portions are large and the pricing is very average. An $8 bloody isn't bad at all! The place is big, too, so not noisy - especially for nice brunch in Boston on the weekend. I recommend the brunch pizza, even to share. I couldn't believe how good it was. Awesome take on a Boston cream donut for dessert, too. Has a very Eastern Standard vibe to it.

Third time here, and each time, it delivers - well-prepared food, good drinks, nice wine list, great service and a pleasing ambiance in a perfect pre-theatre/concert location. What more could one ask for? An espresso machine would be nice; perhaps a few more French wines by the glass; an umbrella stand. But other than that, it would be hard to improve.

The service was excellent. We could not have asked for better. Our server, Brandon, was cheerful, helpful, and attentive. The crab cakes had a pleasant spicy flavor. Soup, salad, and my husband’s fish entree were delicious. The only negative was that the music was rather loud and energetic. For those of us “of an age” that loud music makes hearing difficult. We were served quickly and were easily able to make our Symphony Hall concert on time.

We chose The Westland because we had concert tickets at Symphony Hall. We arrived promptly for our reservation and were greeted warmly and seated immediately. We booked early, before the dinner rush. Our server Wallace was prompt and attentive. Even though the restaurant was not yet busy, the bar was very slow. Our drinks did not arrive until well after our appetizer was out. The kitchen also took a long time get our main meals out. Several tables who were seated well after we arrived received their entrees before we did. My wife had ordered lamb chops, which were offered as a special that evening. In spite of the long wait, the lamb was under cooked. I had beef bourguignon and it was well prepared and very tasty. Our server did comp us dessert and we accepted and had creme brûlée which was really good. Overall, it was good experience but we were a little disappointed with my wife’s entree.
