American
The Wayfarer opened in 2014 and is a bi-level Classic American grille located on the bustling corner of 57th street and 6th Avenue just below Central Park. The diverse artisanal menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients. The menu is complemented by custom cocktails created by award-winning mixologist, Christian Sanders, of Evelyn Drinkery.

The Wayfarer's interior, designed by the award-winning Meyer Davis Studio Inc , evokes a feeling of “old meets new,” drawing inspiration from the 1970’s blended with the classic New York of the 1800’s. The multi-leveled restaurant offers the choice to observe passerby's on the main floor by our open cafe glass windows or enjoy a cocktail in our upstairs lounge.

We eat here often as it is a block from where we live. The food is uniformly very good. The service is mostly very good (it starts to show cracks when it’s very busy). The staff is always very, very nice as arecthe ladiescat the front desk. The warm chocolate chip cookies are a ten. The only place I can be critical is that it is a little expensive for what it is.

Food was tasty, but the service was poor. After waiting for more than 30 minutes to get the waiter to come to us, we were told the house was too busy and they weren’t expecting it. He came back with a platter with cookies, which he said were on the house, as an apology, which was nice. But for our surprise, we were charged for them in the end!!

The waiter was not very professional. It took us 40 min to get 2 glasses of wine and a cocktail. Our appetizer even came before our drinks and our waiter some some excuse that he can’t go behind the bar to do it himself. He was not attentive and rushed us to order at first to only then disregard our table later on. Food was sub par and way over priced. Will not been going back for dinner there ever again, it was a waste of time and money.

Our first time. Won’t be our last. Great menu. A suggestion, however; your menu items could be a bit more descriptive. I hate cilantro but there was no mention of the cilantro in the huevos rancheros and I loved the banana bread but did not
expect chocolate in it. But overall great experience.

Positive: not much wait time and food came quickly. Negative: There was no coat service and waitress didn’t attend to us after the food was delivered. The food was ok par with a diner quality with a hefty price tag.

The food was original, but my risotto was not creamy and the cauliflower didn't seem very roasted. My husband enjoyed his tater tots with caviar and scottish salmon. The service was quite good given the overcrowded dining area and for NYC the prices were decent.

Everything about the restaurant was great- except the music. The food was great, the drinks were great, the chocolate chip cookies for dessert were the best I have ever had, and the service was excellent. HOWEVER, the music was AWFUL and loud. It really took away from the nice ambiance and cheapened the experience. I would typically never complain about music because I enjoy a lively atmosphere and just about anything from the 90’s and early 2000’s but loudly playing Ja Rule was too much for a sit down dinner at a nice restaurant (nothing against Ja Rule; he had a great run).

We enjoyed our visit to the Wayfarer on our long Christmas weekend in NYC! It was raining hard out, but we were able to make a reservation in advance to get there, but with that rain, people were sitting in their tables a little longer than usual, so they opened a couple bar tables at the side of the bar that they were using to stage dishes for us - and we were able to get in and out of there in about 45 minutes, which was great. It's expensive for what you get - but it's in NYC - so there's that! If you're not from there, spending $25 on a hamburger seems high, but you have to adjust your expectations. The combo of the traditional menu items - with a full sushi section, was a unique but great combination. I think the only thing that was a detractor was that our tables were off the bar, but still the responsibility of the bar team, which wasn't the most responsive, and there was one guy who couldn't stop swearing every other word, seeming when he walked by our table every time - which got really old. Otherwise, I'd go back!

We went here for the second time with our friends for holiday brunch. While the food was good (nothing spectacular), the service was awful. Our server was clueless about the items available on the menu. I ordered one of their green/red juices and he said we’re not serving those today because we’re out of them. Yet I could see a lady drink that juice on the table next to us. Other service staff were equally rude. We had a similar experience when we had gone the first time. I’d advise against this place.

Greeted by a very heavy front door and then by an unhelpful almost cranky hostess who responded to our request to be seated away from draft from front door by placing us exactly across from front door albeit a distance away although looking around there was other available seating.
Menu revealed one sole non meat/chicken dish- a spinach mushroom omelet which I ordered - dried out eggs flipped over a pile of soggy spinach with some really good ( the only really good item)!mushrooms).
I had ordered a very well toasted!!! English muffin-,delivered barely toasted- returned and Redelivered
better toasted. My husband’s burger was good but not “the best” but his fries were just short of excellent! I almost forgot the popovers served before orders were taken- awful!!! Soggy, collapsed piles of mush😱with some kind of dark spread - unidentifiable!
Needless to say, we’ll not be returning.

Service

We arrived about 10 minutes early and were seated right away. Unlike many restaurants, this hostess was not smiling and pleasant. She acted as if we were a bother to her.

The waiter and water steward were good and attentive. The food was good and the beverage I had (plum bomb) was very tasty. This was an average experience at best.

The worst part was that the restaurant notified Open Table I was a no-show after the fact. I had a $200 bill to prove I was there.

There are many restaurants to choose from in New York, I would encourage you to seek something higher than average.

I had a couple of bad experiences here last weekend.
First, I made an early reservation for last Thursday. I actually made it earlier in the day. When I arrived for my reservation I was informed that they were not honoring reservations because of a private event. No explanations. No apologies. Just sent in my way. Didn’t seem to care either!
You’d think I wouldn’t try again but circumstances les me to actually go there 3 days later for dinner. The first problem was when we ordered drinks. A long time passed and my wife commented that the bartender seemed to be befuddled. Mind you, I ordered one of the house specialty cocktails. Finally the waiter came back to say they were “out of garnishes” for my drink (which I don’t recall having a garnish) and could he get me a glass of wine, which I translated as our bartender has no clue how to mix a drink!! I just got a diet coke instead.
As for the food, my pork chop was good, but my wife ordered a medium rare filet which came out medium well to well done. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to send it back. Side dishes were mediocre.
Overall, it was just a bad experience.
I won’t make the mistake of coming here again.
