With inspiration stemming from the property’s elegance and unique history, the mansion houses a collection of contemporary artwork, many of which were commissioned exclusively for the project.
Trying too hard and providing vague or inaccurate descriptions of dishes does not bode well. Wine steward was rude but rest of service staff excellent. Dial back unpronounceable ingredients and work toward doing a better job with less esoteric preparations.
The food was excellent and the cocktails were even better. Will definitely return once it reopens.
Cannonball dinner is amazing and so is the staff
Staff was attentive, gave wonderful recommendations
This restaurant just didn't add up for us. We found the food to be overpriced for the quality. The staff was inexperienced. The ambiance was lovely, but not worth the expense. Sadly, we will not return to the Washington Room at this establishment. We may try the burgers in the bar area though.
Excellent food and excellent service at this beautiful, multi-level restaurant and former courthouse.
Beautiful presentation amazing service and adventurous delicious tastes!
Food and service - superb. We felt like we were the only ones in the restaurant. Such thoughtful presentation and wine pairings. We can't wait to visit again soon!
Major service blip on Saturday night. No one came by to take our order for 45 minutes. We had to ask for bread AFTER we were done with salad course and our glasses were empty many times throughout the night. Perhaps they were down a server, but I would have expected a manager to come by or something!
I had dined here once before and had a great experience. This time was the total opposite. If you do not get a table in the main room upstairs then the ambiance is terrible. The veal was tough, sent it back and it’s replacement was only marginally better. Overall meal was terrible, especially when you consider the price.
Made a reservation for Friday night, which happened to be Valentine's Day. Was interested in trying the new incarnation of the restaurant. Was not told it was a special "Valentine's Day" prix fixe menu. When I called earlier in the day to inquire if it were possible to arrive 30 minutes earlier was told, in a highly unprofessional way, "hey we are really slammed tonight so I am going to say no." Initially was shown to a table that was essentially in the doorway. Was moved to another table where we were only provided with one menu. First option was either steak tartare or squid, neither of which I eat. Was given a rather ordinary salad in its place. Head server never came back to inquire whether I even liked the salad. Remaining dishes were fine, but by no means delectable. My husband thought the portions were quite skimpy. Dessert was OK. Would not return and could not recommend. And might add that it was certainly not cheap.
Food was tasty but way overpriced for what you get. Portions very small. While generally the physical structure of the room is decent, the overall ambiance and vibe of the room was poor. Service was only adequate but we felt like we were being rushed. The cost/value ratio here is way off for the 3 course prix fixe menu at $85 pp. On the positive side, the sommelier was very helpful and enthusiastic
Valentine Day dinner. Food and service were poor. Overall a bad experience.
Service was attentive and timely...ambience was colonial and proper...food was good but not distinguished
A truly amazing evening that lived up to every expectation. We had been to the bar and the downstairs restaurant, but never the formal dining room and we will be back! The food is spectacular, the service is amazing, and the menu is perfect in all ways.
Went for my 3rd anniversary for the 1st time to try the 5-course tasting and wine tasting in the Washington Room (put a note in the reservation but didn't receive any congratulation or acknowledgement) and the overall experience was mediocre. Here are the quick takeaways (lack of acknowledgment aside):
1. Beautiful setting and interesting interior decor
2. Delicious dessert, which at the time was a poached pear with goats or sheep milk that had the perfect balance of subtle sweetness and tartness
3. Tender and perfectly cooked bison steak with crunchy smashed potato accompaniment
1. Red snapper crudo lacked any type of bright sauce to tie together with crunchy sesame and savory nori. Fish was also a bit chewy for a crudo.
2. Seared skate wing was cooked nicely but needed some more sweetness in the sauce and something sour to make it more dynamic. It was just very flat in flavor.
3. Lacked a wow factor in the food to make you want to come back for more
Would recommend this place maybe for some casual drink and snacks (oysters!), but did not impress with the tasting menu. Review by instagram #foodbyphat
everything was great! Food / service/ atmosphere.
Y’allll killed it (had to hit the character limit)
Food was not worth the price. Ate very little of what was ordered.
Pure elegance and excellent service. First class in every way.
New Year’s Eve prix fix. Everything was very nice.
We were seated 15 minutes before menus arrived. It was at least 30 minutes before we got our first drink. The sea bass was so overcooked I couldn’t cut it with a fork.
Another exceptional meal at The Washington Room at Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen. Excellent service, super fresh seafood (oysters, tuna sashimi, black sea bass and scallops), and the perfect accompanying wine picked by sommelier Adam. I am already looking foward to my next meal.
I would recommend the Wasington Room for a party of 4 or more. The tables for 2 are all in the corners of the room, which are high traffic areas. The arms of the chairs do not fit under the tables, so one ends up sitting rather far from the table. It is also very noisy. That being said, the food is good.
If the service was more attentive, maybe we wouldn't have noticed the flaws with the food. Waiter walked passed us quickly without acknowledging us several times. It took too long to order and waiter was difficult to find when needed. The squid a la plancha too slimey, and the scallops too sandy on this day. Plates at this price should not include sand. The squash soup was bitter, not sweet. The chocolate dessert was the best part of the meal. Second time there, but probably will not return.
Outstanding food and service in a lovely and refined setting! We all ordered a variety of dishes from seafood to beef to poultry and everything was excellent.
The food was surprisingly bad
We had a great dining experience. Our server Adam made us feel special and his wine knowledge was amazing. Chef AJ came out to say hello. My wifes birthday celebration was a blast.
Menu choices were good but not great. All dishes were very good, but not exceptional. Nice to be able to hear conversations at our table.
I am never one to write a review because I know as a business we all have good days a bad days. Unfortunately this was a very bad day for Jockey Hollow and this review is to simply warn people before making the choice of getting a tasting menu for here.
This being our first time here when we walked in we were very impressed with the historical and modern details that went into designing this restaurant. Very impressive staircase that lead us up to the Washington Room. We were great very graciously and welcoming. We ordered a round of cocktails as we reviewed the menu.
It took roughly 15-20 mins to get our drinks which when it did arrive there was an apology which we brushed it off with the understanding maybe the bar got a big push. Fine, no big deal.
4 out of 6 ordered the 3 course tasting menu. 2 ordered the NY Strip. 2 of us ordered went with the wine pairing. It took between 30 and 40 mins by the time we saw our first course. One of us who did the wine pairing actually finished his before the food reached the table. At no point did a server or manager at least come to the table to show that they were aware of how long it was taking. When it did arrive 4 of us that did prefixe had shredded lettuce with sautéed calamari in a chili vinaigrette. Which was tasty but again to take that long and the receive that was disappointing. This is when we again got an apology for taking as Long as it did.
The next course came out in a timely manner and for us who did the tasting and not knowing what was to come we were hopeful that we would be “wow’d” especially being the main course. We ended up with a smaller portion of the NY strip with farro and broccoli rabe. Cooked to a nice Med rare but was room temp assuming they let it rest a bit to long. Again was not impressed.
Dessert for the tasting menu was a gelato with macerated pears. Again disappointed.
Maybe it’s just me but when you advertise a tasting menu. I expect to see a Chefs culinary creativeness. Nonexistent.
We came for our anniversary despite a few negative reviews as we know this has been the place to be. We chose the prefixe menu as we often do as we love to eat adventurously. We were disappointed to be given a tiny piece of overcooked pork loin as our main dish. We sent it back and the chef sent back out a perfectly cooked and delicious steak. Dessert was a few pear slices and golf ball size of ice cream. I think you may be better off ordering from the a la carte menu here and would imagine the portions are larger for less money. The sommelier, Adam, was wonderful and truly understands good service. Offered a complimentary flass of wine. If it wasnt for him and the way he handled the meal snafoo, we would have been extremely unhappy. Overall, I don’t think we will be back for a meal as I just felt the quantity for the price was sub par.
Our evening was a disaster from start to finish. Our expectations were high based on reviews and also on two successful board dinners held here during the last 6 months but our private, "special" dinner was anything but excellent. Service was poor, food quality was average and our dinners were not delivered to the table at the same time causing some of us to each tepid food.
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here on a Saturday evening. The ambiance and service were spot on. We went with the 5 course chefs tasting menu and were a bit disappointed. Portions were extremely small and we were not served a beef dish of any sort. The room was quiet upon arrival at 6pm but quickly became crowded and a bit loud as there were a few large groups.
Had to ask for lemon twice and waited 40-45 minutes to get one cocktail after being seated.
Food was fair at best and certainly not worth what I paid.
It was our first time dining at JHB&G and the food was delicious. The building is beautiful and energetic. It was a great place to dine with friends. We would go back and also can’t wait to go to the other areas as well. Highly recommend.
Lovely food and environment. Service was good but inconsistent.
Very romantic setting on a cold autumn night. Excellent food!
Excellent , but would have liked a more extensive menu
Not impressed with the food. Food was cold unfortunately. Poor service, very hard to get a drink at the bar before our reservation.
