About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for fine wines
Welcome to The Warren Restaurant, an extension of The Crowborough Estate, holding stock of Sussex Cattle, Boer Goats, Fallow deer, and Wild boar amongst others which the restaurant draws on for its menu. We are a Dog Friendly restaurant.

Given the provenance, the kitchen predominantly cooks British food, occasionally dipping into other cuisines to provide a vehicle for flavours – nettle gnocchi for example, or poached oyster with wild boar chorizo.

WE wanted a unique fun and informal restaurant, to offer their Crowborough Estate’s produce from. When the site of the renowned Signor Franco’s became available, with those iconic arched windows of its orangery and glorious terrace overlooking the Spa town, the stage was set.

We had the set lunch and the choices and food was really lovely. Great value for beautifully prepared dishes. We were sat in the Orangerie which is the most delightful, light-filled space. And best of all? Our sweet dogs were welcome which was a delightful surprise. I highly recommend

The puddings were the highlight of the set menu, especially the tarte tatin and pistachio ice cream, and the macarons. We found the dining experience and the food slightly incongruous - an amuse bouche which was lovely - then the set menu that was very tasty but not consistently 'fine dining'. The pigeon was enjoyed by our group, but the monkfish 'scampi' was a little rubbery as if the membrane was still on it, and under seasoned. The burger and chicken mains were great; very juicy. The aubergine was lovely but on the smaller side.

We had a family birthday Sunday lunch here. The location is great and the views lovely. The dining room is full of character and our table was well laid out. The staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient. In general the food was also very good, although a couple of us that had the lamb for the main course were less satisfied. We also appreciated the bread platter and the complimentary snacks between courses.

The last time we visited the Warren was some years ago and perhaps my memories of past occasions has faded, but I booked a table for two for Mother's Day. The decor now looks tired, the tables creaked and wobbled and the chairs sagged. The waitress dropped cutlery at lest twice and the plate with the meat on it spilled meat juice all over the tablecloth. And they ignored it. The menu resembled that for any Sunday at a pub. No, it was smaller than that. The only main course choices on offer were the usual Sunday roasts or a Tomahawk steak for two at £85. If we wanted a pub roast, we would have gone to a pub. So we had the tomahawk. Given the appearance and texture, we suspected it had been cooked sous vide and then pan-roasted. The flavour was good, but the fat wasn't rendered well and half of it was overdone. It was a disappointing evening. Was that due to my expectations being too high? Perhaps. But this is a restaurant that has slipped a long way in the last 6-7 years. There are pubs with better service and food. It may be a long time before I go back again.

Lovely Sunday set menu at the Warren. It was accompanied with some cute extras for Mother’s Day. The set menu was good for value, the portions were large and food was delicious. The ambience and setting was gorgeous - we were lucky enough to get a window seat in the orangerie. Service was great and the waiters/waitresses were lovely. Food was also more inventive and creative than your average English food restaurant. Would highly recommend especially for special occasions!

To start, we arrived 15 minutes early but were not shown to our table for another half hour and had to ask multiple times. The food was ok but not value for money in any way. The scallops were a bit chewy and lacked flavour. Had the tomahawk steak which came out as just the steak, no real accompaniments and was a bit too raw in the middle slices. It took along time to get any service from staff and had to wait 25 minutes from first asking for the bill. When it finally came, it was wrong also. Was disappointed throughout if Im honest and will not be hurrying to go back

We chose The Warren for our son's 17th birthday. It was our first visit and it met and exceeded expectations. Each dish was unique and delicious - carefully crafted and creative food combinations. We had 2 courses from the set menu and the Warren cleverly manages to combine wonderfully tasting food with decent and just right portions! The service was outstanding - attentive without being effusive. In fact the atmosphere felt relaxed and friendly. At the end of the evening my son was surprised with a delicious birthday cholate desert. We had a memorable evening and will certainly be back.
