We had an excellent time. It had been a year or so since we had been to the Village Pub, and frankly we had forgotten how good the food was and the high skill level of the staff. Everything was great and they did a marvelous job of adapting the pace of the meal to the tempo of our table.
Always a wonderful place to dine. My friend's plane was delayed; hostess able to push my reservation to accommodate us. Thank you. The black cod was divine. Service always impeccable. These are the reasons why this restaurant has weathered the fickle dining tastes over the years.
Service staff was most pleasant and everyone very nice, but very uneven in attention and service. My husband's cocktail order was not as requested, but he did not send it back because we waited so long and the evening had to go on. And, my entree was only lukewarm, but I did not send it back because I HATE causing those types of issues during a meal with other people.
Very disappointed in our server. We have been several times and haven’t ever been rushed to order, to eat and to leave like this time. The restaurant was never filled to capacity during our stay. Server appeared to disapprove of our requests. Unusually disappointing overall and I left not wanting to return which is sad as it as always been a special spot for us.
We celebrated our 30th anniversary with good friends. We had Kampachi, Squash Soup, Raviolo, Sweetbread, Black Cod, Foie Gras, Filet paired with Gls: 2014 Dunstan Chard, 2015 Guillemot, 2012 Caprili, Oscuro Nuevo. Excellent service once seated. Bar was slow at getting our cocktails when we first arrived.
So, I have been trying to take the wife here for a couple of years. As Michelin Starred restaurant and near our house, it seemed ideal for a special occasion. We were seating at our reservation time. When we go out to nice restaurants we like to share, so we ordered two starters and a steak.They had an NY Strip special and Filet available. We asked the waiter and he said the strip would have more flavor but they are both good. We also ordered the Curry Mussels Special and the Foie Gras. Drinks and a little Cheesy bread snack were delivered quickly. Some bread was offered. We normally don't fill up on bread but it looked good and was exceptional. The Mussels showed up in 15-20 minutes. We were not in a hurry so it was fine. They were very tasty and the portion was reasonable. Next up was the Foie Gras. That took 20-25 minutes. It was also very good and a rather large portion. Very rich but enjoyable. We started to notice that our waiter really was not coming by much. My wife's wine was usually empty for a while and then he would come by. Still, not a deal killer at this point. The steak took another 5 minutes and we we got it, we were not sure if it was the right steak. We wanted to check before digging in. We asked for our waiter. He took a few minutes to come over. Once we confirmed it, we took a bite. We both looked at each other, The crust was very tough and needed to be sawed through it and the edge pieces we very tough and dry. I tried a middle bite where it was still very pink (medium was ordered) and also dry and tough. We stopped right there because this was not a $50 steak. It took a few minutes to flag someone down and ask for the waiter again. By the time he showed up it was 9PM (7:30 reservation) and we were pretty unhappy. My wife wanted to handle but practically started crying and asked for the manager. The manager came over 10 minutes later.. She handled it well and we got some free dessert. Overall it was a letdown
The place is not as good as it was in the old days. The main dinner menu does not have enough choices and what it has is boring and over priced. But that does not keep the people away and the parking lot full. They still do not have raw oysters available to serve.
The raviolo appetizer was very good. Our entrees (the duck and the pork) were good but not great. The Pineapple & Coconut desert was very good. In general, it seemed like everything was priced about 20% too high for what we got. It was a little disappointing that we didn't find out about the mussels special until we overheard someone else being told about it as we were leaving. Probably would have gone with that for an entree if I knew.
This had been one of my favorite restaurants, but we did not have as good of an experience this time. The food was a bit bland and undercooked. Then, 3 of us had saved half of our meal for the following day and they lost the leftovers. With each meal being $30-45, that was a waste of a lot of money. Someone gave us their card and said to ask for him next time we came in, but a refund would have been much better. Who knows what they'll do for us next time...
I've been going to the Village Pub for over 30 years, both in its old incarnation and the present one. This was the worst it has been. It took around half an hour before bread arrived; neither of us enjoyed the food, although the atmosphere was as vibrant as usual.
We went for a weekday lunch for our twentieth wedding anniversary. The event was celebrated by a nice card on our table and "Happy Anniversary" in the dessert plate. We couldn't have been happier by the whole experience. My husband was the general manager of an airline at SFO, so we have eaten at some truly spectacular restaurants world-wide. The Pub was among the best. The food was superb, but the ambience and the service were what really made the experience unforgettable. Our waiter was charming and attentive. I will recommmend the Pub to everyone I know, especially those seeking a once-in-a-lifetime treat.
The Village Pub takes itself very seriously. It's evident in the dark wood paneling, in the sky-high prices, and in the phone book of a wine list it offers. Its serious of purpose is not, however, evident in its service, which can only be described as poor. If our waiter hadn't had sweat dripping down his face all evening, I'd have asked him why he only visited our table once an hour. We felt lucky to be enjoying the company at our table, because the experience provided by the restaurant was frustrating.
Service was a bit slow. Coffee and dessert (cookies) took forever. We were a two top so didn't feel like a priority for the waiter. We have eaten here numerous times and this was our least favorite experience. I usually don't fill these out but we really like this restaurant and will come back. If the service is lackluster next time I may have to pass on coming here anymore. I come from a restaurant background and do understand how hectic lunch service can get but we did feel neglected.
We still love you Village Pub!
We've always loved the Village Pub for its ambiance, good service, and delicious food. Our most recent meal was marred by an overcooked entree, and an overpriced glass of wine ($35!) recommended to pair with a salmon dish. While we acknowledge that we should have asked the price before agreeing to the recommendation, it does rather spoil a romantic dinner to be asking for the prices of everything. It never occurred to us that a "wine by the glass" would be so expensive.
This is my third visit to The Village Pub. The previous two visits were impeccable in every way and gave me the confidence to bring one of our friends here for a third visit. It's a shame, because the service was embarrassingly bad -- possibly some of the worst we've seen in the peninsula at ANY price point.
Our waiter, Sebastian, was incompetent. He tried to pour on the charm from time to time, but then wouldn't be seen for FIFTEEN TO THIRTY MINUTES. There are numerous examples, but it started at the beginning (we waited at least 15 minutes to order our drinks, 15 minutes after that to actually get them) and continued through the meal (coffee and after dinner drinks were never even entered into the system; we waited half an hour and only after receiving the bill did Sebastian realize he should actually have input our order; he was too busy pouring on the charm at the table next to ours, reminiscing about the old days). Our meal stretched over the three hour mark and most of the time was spent waiting for anything -- service, food, or attention of any sort.
Consistent with our previous two visits, the food, drinks, and wine service was impeccable. Bussing and kitchen staff were on point. The sommelier at one point took over drink service for the table since our waiter hadn't been seen since emptying our beverages 15 minutes prior. I don't know how to put it nicely: Sebastian is an embarrassment to an otherwise fine restaurant and I will refuse any table served by him in the future.
