The Vestry Ratings and Reviews
Music was deafening. We couldn't talk to each other because it was so loud. Asked the hostess if our room could be turned down and she said yes and turned it down. Only to have a surley waiter ten it back up. Then the waitress turned it down, and Mr. Grumpy cranked it back up. We then moved from indoors to outdoors and noise level was fine. Food was great. Avoid Mr. Grumpy Waiter and the center loud cave and you'll probably be ok.
Excellent on all fronts except how long it took to get our drinks. Group of 7 ordered 3 rounds and each time it took over 15 minutes to get the various drinks. We sat directly across from the bar and could see the mixer casually chatting with coworkers while we waited over 15 minutes, thrice.
Food is great, ambiance is awesome, staff is friendly!
We went to celebrate our anniversary and really wanted to have a nice time but there were strange things that marred the visit. Our drinks were forgotten about and we had to ask for them.
The bench I sat on had a piece of sharp rusty metal that cut my calf as I stood up. The staff helped me clean up and I don't fault our waitress for it. I made sure to alert them to the sharp metal and they covered it up with a towel and tape.
Excellent service, food, and drink. We went before a concert at the Chapel, and were very happy with everything that night. We split the empanadas, then went with the Scotch eggs and Pozole. Both were interesting, flavorful, and just the right portions. We loved our server, who paced us with plenty of time before we needed to leave for the show. We will be back again.
This was our second recent trip to The Vestry and once again it didn't disappoint. If you are going to a show at The Chapel, this is the place to eat. Prices are very reasonable, service is good, and the cocktails are distinctive (we like the Lady Guadalupe with its extra kick of habanero!). The food is fresh and creative with some excellent small plates to serve as appetizers (the yellowtail is not to be missed) and the larger plates are all under $20. That makes this a very reasonable dinner for SF. I've had the empanadas (tasty but two don't really make a meal - I should have had two order or an extra order of yellowtail) and the pork loin: both are very tasty. My husband had the chicken sandwich and thought it was outstanding.
My husband and I both had the fried chicken dinner. The chicken was decent... I might have it again. The gravy was odd- it had some type of herb in it that definitely doesn’t belong in gravy. The big disappointment was the mashed potatoes. They had almost no flavor except a mild sweetness and were lukewarm when served, while everything else was hot. Wine and after dinner drinks were very good. Dessert (it is it) was so so.
The Vestry (the restaurant and outdoor heated dining patio at The Chapel Showroom and Lounge) is a great experience and an amazing value. We had Crudo on homemade tortillas, a chorizo encrusted scotch egg, amazing fried chicken and mashed potatoes, and a margarita key lime pie that blew us away. Everything was in season, reasonably priced, generously portioned and beautifully presented. Crafty cocktails, without being too precious and a small but perfectly curated wine list left us very happy and paired properly. Chef Elaine Osuna puts out super high-end, non fussy, approachable food in a very cozy, warm and inviting setting in a historical SF setting. I almost hate to leave this review in case it screws up my chance for a table in the future! Bon apetit.
Enjoyed the outdoor patio and the fried chicken sandwich. Fries were not hot but that's a problem in a lot of places. Drinks were tasty. The low star rating is more about the awful server we had. She was slow, unpleasant and when I asked about the menu, totally flippant. 'How's the fried chicken? It's Fried.' Yuck. She's lucky she got an automatic tip from our party of eight because she deserved half of what she got. I called later to give feedback to manager and he was great to talk to. So I will give it another chance.

What's not to like? The Vestry is a fun, friendly place to stop even if just for a drink - the bar staff is very personable and there are some great mixed drinks! (Our favorite is the Lady Guadalupe.) The menu changes regularly but is accurate on the website so you can plan ahead. The choices are eclectic and are currently almost like tapas with something for everyone. A nice number of choices and everything is prepared and presented nicely. I had the pork tenderloin and it was done perfectly. One guy had the empanadas and loved them and other had the fried chicken sandwich which he also liked. (Beware of the spicy sauce, though, and get it on the side! He likes it spicy, but a little of this very tasty sauce goes a long way - as our server warned us!) The wine by the glass list is short, but has a nice selection.
I would not recommend this place to my friends or come back. Mostly because our waitress was rude. I ordered a side of potatoes but she did not tell me that my food already came with potatoes. The host and busboys were nice and helpful though. The ambiance was nice but the food was not that great to come back. And I thought the brunch was on the pricier side for food that was just okay.
I had dinner here before a show at the chapel, so it was super convenient for me. The menu had a good amount of variety, and I like that they used local ingredients. I had the BLT and it was very yummy, the bacon cooked perfectly. I also have the chop chop salad, and it was also very tasty, perfectly dressed, fresh and yummy. I will definitely try to make dinner at the Vestry before my next show at the chapel
We were going to see Todd Rundgren at The Chapel. We had a meet and greet at 6:00 pm. The show started at 8:00 pm. We had dinner at 7:00 pm and made the show perfectly. It was a great way to pass the time versus standing in The Chapel. My wife had the fried chicken that was done to perfection. My pasta could have been a little less cooked but was great overall. Our server made sure that we got our food and bill in time for the show.
It was a rare warm evening in SF, and I fortunately remembered that The. Vestry has a lovely patio and great cocktails. We were out early so we're easily able to get a reservation the day of... Even though the cocktail menu was tempting, 3 of the 4 of us ordered aperol spritzes, perfect for summer evenings. One person in our group is vegetarian so we stuck to veg, with plenty to choose from on the menu, and share. Delicious salads and flatbreads! The extremely warm and friendly service contributed to a memorable get together.
