The Van's 'On The Hill' Ratings and Reviews
2 ladies who lunch met again at Van's (our place) for a wonderful meal. Ordered from Loring's new smaller plates/appetizer menu. Enjoyed bacon wrapped prawns and 2 special salads.
Enjoyed our cocktails! Jennifer is the very best wait person & Lisa at the front is super!
Very very festive at the holidays, with little white lights inside and out. Great view. Food was delicious and plenty of it! Service was a little slow but does not matter if you are not in a rush. The place has a wonderful view of the bay and has a lot of history. The seating is cozy and can be a little noisey but it is a great place to take out of town guests.
Eaten here several times. Food is very good and menu selection as well as specials are diverse. Atmosphere is lively, rustic and has a historical feel. Staff is very friendly, location provides an excellent view of the bay especially on a clear night. Coming at Christmas is nice as well as they really decorate the place. Cocktails are very good and offer top shelf at a reasonable price. Good wine selection as well. They offer a frequent diners membership and have events and challenges to win free meals. Service was a little slow for the first time and we were there after 8:00 pm which is surprising for that time. It can get a little loud depending on what area you sit in, there are 4 distinct dining areas outside of the bar. Will definitely be back soon
Well I wish open table would add a maybe under the yes or no recommend part. Someone else may like this.Obviously there are quite a few that do as it was full. My 'window' seat was in front of the emergency exit door and view of the stair landing. A HUGE no no putting table against the door. Server was great. I had the prime rib my hubby the sand dabs. Both were just ok. I opted to pay for a side of cream spinach as the carrots and green beans sounded blah. Two cocktails two glasses of wine. no salad or dessert and the total was $175.00.Ther are just better places to go for a better meal. It was very Xmassy though ..although very kitchy. I also would want to sit in the first dining room not the second which was so boring.
It was an exquisite Thanksgiving Dinner with a wonderful view! The menu had both traditional dishes and offerings for people who did not want ham or turkey. We chose a pork chop and the filet. Both were cooked perfectly. We had salad, wedge for me and spinach for my friend. They were the perfect size to compliment our meals. We did not have dessert, but I know the banana cream pie looked great when it passed our table. The waiter was friendly and efficient. It made for a great special occasion dinner. The holiday decorations were lovely inside and out.
We've been several times and always had a good meal with good service. However, this past Saturday was an exception. We had a reservation for 7pm and were seated on time. We sat for 25 minutes and we finally asked a bus boy (after we saw folks who were seated after us get their cocktails), to send someone over as we had not been approached at all by anyone since being seated. They came over and said there was a miscommunication on who our server was...clearly no one. I thought servers had assigned sections? Anyway, the female manager said sorry and that was that. We had to ask our server to comp our first round of cocktails and she said yes, that she was sorry about the mix-up. Our server was not good, forgot to bring one of the drinks, forgot the second round of drinks too. When we got the bill they had comped 2 of the first 4 drinks! By this time we just wanted to leave. Any good manager would have automatically offered to comp our first round of drinks instead of the customer having to request this..and then they didn't even do that right! Will be a while before we go back there, very disappointed. Won't be telling anyone to hurry up and go to the Vans anytime soon.
We've were disappointed. We usually go there for the prime rib. It was awful. Tough, chewy, difficult to cut. I'm kicking myself for not sending it back. It seems like they are using a lower grade of beef. I think we'll go elsewhere next time. The service was great, and the view, wonderful. Dessert was great. The entree was disappointing!
I’ve been to Van’s several times, first time commenting on it. It has older decor, mixed in with a few small remodels, kind of 60’s looking, but I think that’s probably part of its charm. They have two dining rooms, front room is louder than the lowered ceiling , smaller back room. Great View from both because it’s “On the hill”. Nice wine list which I think is reasonably priced. The Asian grandmotherly waitress we had this visit was a kick, funny banter, loved her. She told us they decorate the place all our for Christmas! I told her I’ll be back to see it, and her too!
Made reservations after googling great places to eat in Belmont(side note, I was born and raised in bay area and had never been here! PS I'm 50)... this little gem popped up and I couldn't have been more pleased. We made reservations for our daughter's 19th birthday. The hostess Lisa, was friendly and so accommodating. Our waiter Tony was just as friendly and attentive. They along with the other staff went above and beyond. I have already told my friends, what a great place to have a have dinner... oh yeah and the food is delicious! Can't wait to go back.
Wow, this place is a time capsule. Some great history but unfortunately, the decor and the menu are also ancient. Food was mediocre and obviously not locally sourced or truly fresh. There is a lot of room for improvement. The staff was over the top friendly and attentive, cloth napkins & table covers were a surprise and the view is pretty cool on a clear day. However, I would not recommend eating here until they modernize the food to fit the standards of 2017 and not 1945.
