The Van's 'On The Hill' Ratings and Reviews
I’ve been to Van’s several times, first time commenting on it. It has older decor, mixed in with a few small remodels, kind of 60’s looking, but I think that’s probably part of its charm. They have two dining rooms, front room is louder than the lowered ceiling , smaller back room. Great View from both because it’s “On the hill”. Nice wine list which I think is reasonably priced. The Asian grandmotherly waitress we had this visit was a kick, funny banter, loved her. She told us they decorate the place all our for Christmas! I told her I’ll be back to see it, and her too!
Made reservations after googling great places to eat in Belmont(side note, I was born and raised in bay area and had never been here! PS I'm 50)... this little gem popped up and I couldn't have been more pleased. We made reservations for our daughter's 19th birthday. The hostess Lisa, was friendly and so accommodating. Our waiter Tony was just as friendly and attentive. They along with the other staff went above and beyond. I have already told my friends, what a great place to have a have dinner... oh yeah and the food is delicious! Can't wait to go back.
Wow, this place is a time capsule. Some great history but unfortunately, the decor and the menu are also ancient. Food was mediocre and obviously not locally sourced or truly fresh. There is a lot of room for improvement. The staff was over the top friendly and attentive, cloth napkins & table covers were a surprise and the view is pretty cool on a clear day. However, I would not recommend eating here until they modernize the food to fit the standards of 2017 and not 1945.
Always enjoy the food. It's done with just the right amount of flavor, but not spicy. Plates are served attractively & portions are spot on. You are 1 of the few places that serve chicken livers & for me that is a special treat that I occasionally like to indulge in.
The service is always wonderful, waiters are charming, friendly & professional.
The Van's never disappoints. We go often for lunch and always enjoy the food and of course the view. One of the few places you can get soft shell crab. The last few times we have been there, we have been served by Geo, who is friendly and takes good care of our table. This is one of our favorite restaurants.
We had great service and really good food. Prime rib was fabulous. Everyone had something different and everyone was very pleased. For my wife's birthday did a very nice job of writing happy birthday with her name. Only thing I would change is they have red lights on inside and it reflects on glass and ruins some of the ambiance of the view. used to be no lights and view rocked!
Waitress was great!
This really is on a hill and I felt like we were parked sideways so don't forget your E brake! Started the night with roasted garlic and let me tell you, as a first time experience, WOW!!! Our entrees were the chicken fried steak. The perfect comfort food with a delicious gravy. This was my gf chicken fried steak experience and she absolutely loved it. BUT..... what I really came here for was their famous Mesquite Broiled Local Range Chicken. They give you a heads up and tell you that it will take 40 minutes. Well worth the wait! Perfectly seasoned and juicy. Large portion (it's literally half Cali size chicken). It came with garlic mash potatoes. Our waiter, Tony, was excellent. Attentive and honest with recommendations. Finished the meal with a deconstructed banana cream pie with homemade whip cream, banana mouse with fresh bananas, and toffee brittle that acted as your crust. Must check out restaurant.
I would have been interested to see the view during the day.
We arrived a little early for dinner. They seated us promptly. Brought out the birthday balloons
and we happily ordered. They even prepared my favorite skillet fried chicken which is not on the menu. The city lights and a full moon contributed to a very special celebration!
My only disappointment was I ordered a special, Basa fish, which I later learned was a product of Vietnam. Had I known that, I certainly would not have ordered it. I think it's something customers should be told. I assume when I'm at a good restaurant that the fish is fresh and local.
We chose Sunday as the offer prime rib on the weekend as a special.
One would expect au juice and a baked potato with the meal for $60 but I got a dry plate and bland mashed potato. The steamed vegetables were mostly red and green bell pepper. Everyone else (4)liked their meal but I was left wanting. The bar cocktails are small and pricey with three drinks costing $34 without tip
We were disappointed in our waitress who on multiple occasions questioned the qty of food we were ordering. She was concerned that it would be too much and we would leave it. Just wondering why she would think it was her responsible or role to question what we wanted to order. It was a very special occasion and we were hungry! Very ODD!!!
Really disappointed with a return visit here- I took my mom after a day in Half Moon Bay and it took over 30 minutes for the waiter to come over and acknowledge us. When we told him that we're ready to order he said "Let me just take care of this table over here and I'll be right back"..... Food was 2/10- ordered the Filet Medallions and they came out cold and sad-looking, no sear on the meat whatsoever. My FIL ordered the Salmon which came dry- 10 minutes after the food was dropped off and the dish halfway consumed the waiter popped back over and offered some "lemon butter caper sauce" for the Salmon. I don't know if this was a one-off issue or represents the direction this establishment is going, but we probably won't be back.
The food was delicious; the waiters were attentive; however, the noise level was unbearable. There was no way we three could have a conversation. We are senior citizens and like to visit with one another without having to scream at each other over the noise in the room. Also, we probably won't go again because of the hillside. We felt we were an accident waiting to happen even though we did use the handicap entrance and exit. However, we would recommend our young friends to have dinner there---but then the young don't have balance problems like we older folk.
