Once again we loved Lisa at the front desk greeting us and Geo, our favorite waiter. The sand dabs are always our go to meal.
You can't go wrong with the Van's
We had great service and really good food. Prime rib was fabulous. Everyone had something different and everyone was very pleased. For my wife's birthday did a very nice job of writing happy birthday with her name. Only thing I would change is they have red lights on inside and it reflects on glass and ruins some of the ambiance of the view. used to be no lights and view rocked!
Waitress was great!
It was great for a birthday dinner for my father-in-law
Been going there for over 50 years. Met and reconnected with friends not seen for 70 years!!!! Had a great time with Sand Dabs & Prawns entrees. Enjoyed the view & catching up Not rushed. Very good bartender & waiter.
This really is on a hill and I felt like we were parked sideways so don't forget your E brake! Started the night with roasted garlic and let me tell you, as a first time experience, WOW!!! Our entrees were the chicken fried steak. The perfect comfort food with a delicious gravy. This was my gf chicken fried steak experience and she absolutely loved it. BUT..... what I really came here for was their famous Mesquite Broiled Local Range Chicken. They give you a heads up and tell you that it will take 40 minutes. Well worth the wait! Perfectly seasoned and juicy. Large portion (it's literally half Cali size chicken). It came with garlic mash potatoes. Our waiter, Tony, was excellent. Attentive and honest with recommendations. Finished the meal with a deconstructed banana cream pie with homemade whip cream, banana mouse with fresh bananas, and toffee brittle that acted as your crust. Must check out restaurant.
I would have been interested to see the view during the day.
We arrived a little early for dinner. They seated us promptly. Brought out the birthday balloons
and we happily ordered. They even prepared my favorite skillet fried chicken which is not on the menu. The city lights and a full moon contributed to a very special celebration!
5 stars as it shows up in many "pub" searches, yet has a menu far beyond fish n chips and fried onions. MANY options - gluten free even! Views are fabulous... warm and cozy vibe. Enjoyed our time!
The seafood is not fresh, kind of cold. The service is is not friendly. Little bite over price for the quality what I order. Onion soup and coffee were good.
THE PLACE WAS EXCEPTIONALLY ENERGETIC THE NIGHT OF RESERVATION.
WE CAN HARDLY HEAR OUR CONVERSATION.
Have enjoyed great food for special occasions over the years. Now that I am retired and have less money for special dinners, the coupons encourage me to return to Vans more frequently.
My only disappointment was I ordered a special, Basa fish, which I later learned was a product of Vietnam. Had I known that, I certainly would not have ordered it. I think it's something customers should be told. I assume when I'm at a good restaurant that the fish is fresh and local.
We chose Sunday as the offer prime rib on the weekend as a special.
One would expect au juice and a baked potato with the meal for $60 but I got a dry plate and bland mashed potato. The steamed vegetables were mostly red and green bell pepper. Everyone else (4)liked their meal but I was left wanting. The bar cocktails are small and pricey with three drinks costing $34 without tip
Fantastic service as always, Thanks to the staff for everything!
Jennifer, our server, was outstanding. We were a party of 6 celebrating a couple's anniversary. She was so efficient, friendly and joyful. Our prime rib, sand dabs and pasta entrees were very good. The salads (wedge & house) were also very good.
The best Prime Rib anywhere! My husband loved the Jambalaya!
Family-owned restaurant with a lot of local history. Great spot for a "nicer" restaurant where I can bring my three kids (all under age 8) and still get a good meal.
Good location, good service, but expensive. We were disappointed with the fish and chips we ordered. It was soggy and not even good. The escargot was good so was the salmon. We expected more.
We were disappointed in our waitress who on multiple occasions questioned the qty of food we were ordering. She was concerned that it would be too much and we would leave it. Just wondering why she would think it was her responsible or role to question what we wanted to order. It was a very special occasion and we were hungry! Very ODD!!!
Really disappointed with a return visit here- I took my mom after a day in Half Moon Bay and it took over 30 minutes for the waiter to come over and acknowledge us. When we told him that we're ready to order he said "Let me just take care of this table over here and I'll be right back"..... Food was 2/10- ordered the Filet Medallions and they came out cold and sad-looking, no sear on the meat whatsoever. My FIL ordered the Salmon which came dry- 10 minutes after the food was dropped off and the dish halfway consumed the waiter popped back over and offered some "lemon butter caper sauce" for the Salmon. I don't know if this was a one-off issue or represents the direction this establishment is going, but we probably won't be back.
All around excellent neighbor restaurant for the food, sports onT.V. and ambience.
Wait staff very knowledgable; provided the perfect advice for what and how much to order based on our interests and tastes. Food tasted fantastic! Considering booking for a holiday team dinner.
Two wonderful older gals enjoyed cocktails and sand dabs for lunch plus, plenty of gossip!
Great service made a birthday special I would suggest Vans on the Hill for a great meal on a special occasion
mediocre and overpriced food. good view and enjoyed the history of the place.
Incredible prime rib.
Truly an unadulterated old school experience.
We're definitely carnivores! Even in SF...I love the clam chowder and fresh fish, but 2-lb bone-in ribeye at The Van's confirms the carnivore part... Will always visit when in town.
The food was delicious; the waiters were attentive; however, the noise level was unbearable. There was no way we three could have a conversation. We are senior citizens and like to visit with one another without having to scream at each other over the noise in the room. Also, we probably won't go again because of the hillside. We felt we were an accident waiting to happen even though we did use the handicap entrance and exit. However, we would recommend our young friends to have dinner there---but then the young don't have balance problems like we older folk.
Always a good meal. Pleasant server. Wonderful view. Hostess was a good people person.
For the 2nd time in 2 weeks, 2 women friends enjoyed the Sand Dabs.
No one rushed us & we can catch up & talk!
Geo is terrific!
2 girlfriends enjoying an early birthday lunch of the Sand Dabs, which we both love.
It was a busy Saturday evening, yet we were seated immediately. Our server was attentive and helpful with choosing cocktails to start our meal. We were both pleased with our dinners, followed by dessert. It was apparently birthday night, as we were not the only ones celebrating a birthday. Almost all of the tables around us seemed to have 🎈 balloons and the staff were busy singing happy birthday. We had a wonderful time.
Always a great dinning experience. NY Steak was just right. Garlic pasta ... yummy. And the Sand Dabs are always the best! Deserts!
There were seven of us and we arrived on time for our reservation. The table was by the window as requested. Our server was absolutely remarkable. He was helpful, friendly and efficient. The food ( al always ) delicious and as we ordered prepared!! it was a great event in pleasure and excellent food. My brother and wife were visiting from Florida and I was so pleased to bring them to my favorite Restaurant. They did not disappoint!!
it's a great place to meet friends or celebrate a special occasion or just enjoy a nice meal .The staff is wonderful. You feel like you are having dinner at someone's home, friendly ,efficient, attentive but not hovering You never feel as if they are waiting for you to leave so they can turn the table!!
Food is very good. Try the prime rib. Order the baked potato and share as it is large enough for 2 or even 3!! Good bar drinks. All around a good classic non pretentious restaurant. Take a moment to check out the photos. History is on those walls. An under the radar gem.
This is the perfect 1/2 way spot to meet friends from the city if you happen to live in the south bay as we do.
Well worth the drive.
This was our first visit to Van's and we really enjoyed ourselves. It was my birthday, and we were looking for something different. We were treated to a lovely table by the window, (not really a bad seat in the room).
We split the fried ravioli which was really different, and really good! For entree, I had smaller filet, and it was great. My partner had lamb chops, and though the flavor was good, they seemed pretty fatty, at least fattier than we've had at other places.
Dessert was the brownie sundae that we split and was of course Awesome!
The menu is extensive, and we look forward to coming back to try out many other dishes, as well as the appetizers and salads. The vibe is really comfortable and warm, and the staff was Great!
Great food and service for our anniversary !
Our server Geovanni needs to be complimented for his attention to
details and excellent customer relation.
I've eaten at The Van's many times. The food is always excellent, service great, and the view of the Bay Area is hard to beat.
the problem with this restaurant is that the tables are pretty close together and so when there is a noisy group (or two), it makes it really hard to hear. but it is one of our favorites
