DON’t BOTHER - THEY CLOSED BUT STILL TAKE RESERVATIONS?!
We were very disappointed that we made a reservation on Open table and when we got to the restaurant it was closed for service until the Fall.
The Vanguard really good for Indianapolis if you're not looking for a steakhouse.
I say this depending on their tolerance for slow service. I think sitting at the bar might be the way to enjoy this place.
Fun environment, well-made cocktails and excellent food.
My mother day’s brunch was ruined with poor service and pour quality food. Was it a day off for the or that what they offer mediocre food. Not going there anytime soon
Would not recommend for Mother's Day, but might try again for something else.
I love this place!! It's hip and fun!! A great place to bring friends when they visit Indy!!
We were not aware a DJ would be playing music later in the day. The place was empty and could have been seated anywhere. Given that the DJ station was empty and covered, we didn't request to be moved. Once the music started, it was impossible to talk. The hostess, who should have known that music would be played, could have asked us where we wanted to sit.
It’s a nice atmosphere but with only one other table occupied at 7:30 on a Wednesday night was an indication that this wasn’t a Broad Ripple favorite.
There also was an unpleasant smell lingering in the front room when we walked in.
After being seated by our server who was very pleasant we ordered two appetizers. The chicken pot stickers were over fried and border line burnt but the artichoke spinach dip was decent. Three of us ordered the mixed berry salad with either salmon or chicken and one other friend ordered the lasagna, after the server told us they were on their sixth chef and this one made lasagna better than he did.
The salads came out simply lettuce with a few sliced strawberries. The menu description was pecans, goat cheese, creamy strawberry vinagarette and MIXED berries. We asked the server why we didn’t have the described salad he apologized, went to the kitchen and came back with some pecans and goat cheese to sprinkle around. He also informed us it was the sous chefs first day. Overall it was a disaster.
We went for their Sunday brunction. The mimosas and DJ were fun. It was not busy but the food took some time to get to us. The food was okay, needed seasoned and the bacon was a little soggy. Probably would not come for brunch again.

Very disappointed after reading such good reviews. Food was not good. Chairs are uncomfortable. But cocktails were delicious and service was attentive and delightful.

Horribly unorganized. Food took way to long. Appetizer, salad, and entrees all arrived at the same time. 3 other people in the place. Took 45 minutes to get food. At least 20 for our bar order. When we got food nothing was seasoned. Food was SUPER salty (the duck specifically). Beet salad lacked salt and sweet, very acidic, very bland. Steak was ordered medium-rare, came out supper rate. Like chared on the surface then bloody uncooked there on. We like it that way, but seriously under cooked for medium rare. Service was supper slow. Waiter had no clue as to what was going on. We will not be going back again. If you want food food close to this, go to Northside social. Or even Indian palace.
Overall very good experience and great food. Only complaint is their website promotes bottomless mimosas on Sunday but upon arrival found out they no longer are doing that. So I suggest making sure all marketing channels are updated so customers don’t find out upon arrival and become disappointed. Besides that great service and atmosphere, they do offer bottles for $15 which is only $5 more so that made up for it somewhat. I do recommend this location for brunch though!
On Opentable it says that they have a Bottomless Brunch on Sunday's and they do not. That needs to be edited. Other than that, the service was wonderful, everything was great. I will say that was a bit of a let-down to show up and be told they "dont think" they do that anymore.

This is a great place for a nicer dinner in Broadripple! We were promptly seated with our reservation and the service was impeccable. The decor is trendy and bright with a nice large bar area as well. I had the filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus spears. Filet was cooked exactly the way I asked with a beautiful crust on the outside. Also had a mixed greens salad that was very good. Opted for dessert as well which was a small chocolate ganache that was fantastic, smooth and rich/creamy! Had a nice glass of cabernet too. Would definitely return to try something else!
Delicious food and a beautifully modern interior. Unfortunately we experienced a somewhat awkward atmosphere. I would definitely go back for the food, but some issues between the wait staff and management made our dinner a little bit uncomfortable.

The food was fantastic! We had the moistest crab cake we have ever tasted. The duck was savory and delicious. The beet salad was an excellent combination of greens, beets, and goat cheese.
The service was prompt and courteous. We saw another server put the bill book in the back of his pants (inside his pants), an odd choice but, since it does not come in contact with food, hardly unsanitary.
The price is average for gourmet, quality, table service food.
Would recommend with reservations as we felt that our server really didn't want to be there. Almost as if we were a bother to him. Food was very good however. I will try it again unless we would get the same server.
I was so excited to try this place out, and my husband and I decided Valentine’s Day was the time to do it. What a disappointment! We spent a little over $300 (the fixed priced Valentine’s menu was $100/person, so that plus wine, tip, etc. added up). Not only did the level of food and service not match that price, it’s actively insulting that they charged us so much for what we got. When we first arrived, no one was at the host stand, which is totally fine because hosts have other duties. However, the two bartenders were talking behind the bar. They turned and saw us, then immediately turned back to talking without any acknowledgement. They weren’t even making drinks at the time. They just didn’t want to deal with us. Our server was very nice but really didn’t understand the menu or some basics about food service. He asked if I wanted pepper on my salad. I said no. He went ahead to pepper it. We had a couple questions about the menu. He didn’t know the answers (not everyone knows everything, but he was consistent in lacking familiarity with the menu/bar). He brought our courses out at the wrong time. Both he and a person I assume were the house manager were very sweaty. Sweat happens, we’re human, but in the food service industry, it feels like it might be prudent not to show up dripping to a table. Not only that, but the house manager was running around the room like crazy. It’s a little tricky to kick back to a romantic meal with a damp stranger dashing around your table. Now, I get it: the restaurant industry is intense! There’s something to be said, though, for still cultivating an air of calm even while keeping everything running.
Now, most important part of a restaurant: the food. Right? I could forgive a lot if they knocked the food out of the park. Alas! Their crab cakes were weirdly mayonnaise-d. The value - I think it was expensive and I did not like to have a fixed menu for Valentine's day. The menu options per serving course were ok but far too many serving course. For example why I should pay the same if I only want salad and entre?
Went for valentines. Nice restaurant but the food was average and over priced. The service was similar to what you get at an inexpensive family restaurant. Servers were unfriendly seemed bothered by guests.
We were seated quickly for our reservation and handed special menus for a $100 each four-course Valentine’s menu. This was not in the restaurant notes for the reservation. The waitress did say that the regular menu was also available since we did not want that much food. We ordered an appetizer that was OK, not great. For entree, the scallops were cooked and seasoned perfectly but the associated polenta and veggies were only fair. The chicken entree came undercooked and was sent back; the chicken returned was the same chicken that had been picked through originally. This was definitely not acceptable.
The French 75 cocktail was excellent, i.e. not too sweet. The service was excellent and accommodating.
Note: this restaurant requires a credit card when making reservation. The next morning we got an email from OpenTable asking why we did not uphold our reservation. I believe OpenTable has resolved this issue so we do not get further charged.
My wife and I were thoroughly impressed with the food and the service...we'll be back.
Food was spectacular, service excellent, and noise level perfect. Restaurants have gotten so loud. Loved carrying on a conversation over dinner and drinks without shouting. Perfect dinner.
Great food and so much flavor! Portions sizes were plenty for all with the devour menu! Wait time to be seated with a reservation was a bit longer than preferred but they took care of us well once we were seated. The gumbo was to die for!! Will definitely be back and try sitting at the bar.
Service was very slow. Mussels were in way too much broth. Bread brought with mussels was not very good. Didn’t get soup that was ordered. Duck was very undercooked, skin rubbery. Very disappointing compared to what I’d read about the place.
We were not pleased with our experience at The Vanguard. The seats were extremely uncomfortable and very close to the bar that people were hitting us as they walked by. The gumbo was very good, but the chicken entree was quite dry.
Off night. Bad weather and I think they had some call-outs. The bad: the bar was slow and my wife's first drink was off and had to be returned. My gumbo was ladled out of the top of the pot and had no substance, just broth. The good: the rest of the food was at least passable and the salad I had on the Devour menu I would class as excellent. The staff was friendly and seemed to be trying their best. However, this is a premium priced restaurant and I just have to knock off a star and I am being generous. Frankly doubt I will be back.
The food was excellent and the chef very accommodating for my food allergies. The only minor recommendation I would make is for the bar to upscale their Cabernet and red blend wine options.
The salmon was perfectly prepared. The waiter had a fun personality but seemed a bit overextended. All of us (6) enjoyed the food a lot.
Such a fun place for a date or a girls day out! We went for brunch and it was perfect!
