Service slow and limited menu and no substitutions. At the price point you should at least serve mash potatoes rather than French fries with filet and poor salad. Recommend music outside.
It was the total experience. 5 star in every way. Ambiance, service, food, drinks…SUPERB.
Our dinner reservation cation was made for 8:30 in the garden. From the moment we arrived the staff was amazing. The establishment itself is breathtaking. Our waiter ( Paublo) was such a wonderful young man and so full of knowledge on The Vanderbilt.
Our food was delicious and the garden atmosphere takes your breathe away.
If I had to give one thumbs down, a table away had two smaller dogs that joined them for dinner that decided to bark the whole time. I’m not a fan of dogs at finer dining.
We had to wait a bit to be seated, but I imagine that was due to the short-staffing that all restaurants are experiencing. After that, everything was excellent. The sommelier did sn excellent job of saving our bottle of wine from a faulty, difficult cork. Great food with portions sized perfectly.
Exquisite recently renovated decor bringing the Vanderbilt to a higher expectation of elegance and service.
Sat outside, service was slow, took a long time to get tap water, never received ice we requested, took a long time to get our food but once received was delicious, ordered coffee and dessert and when it was finally received coffee slipped off tray and waitress burned herself. Coffee was also spilled all over table and my dress, was not only charged for coffee but took forever to get the bill. Maybe service would have been different if we had dined indoors?
Tables near us also had dogs barking and kids crying, otherwise atmosphere and music was nice. Just wish service had been a better.
Our waiter was awesome! Such great hospitality.
Dear 2travelers, We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your waiter at The Vanderbilt. We are so excited to continue welcoming in guests to explore our reimagined Downtown Mansion and hope to have you join us again in the future.
Menu was very limited with very little seafood options and it is Newport. What we had was good however for the price the portions were small and $18 for a green salad is a bit much. Service was good, Martini's were not.
Dear CWright, We are so glad you were able to join us at The Vanderbilt, reimagined. We have provided your feedback to our team and hope to welcome you back in as our ever-evolving menu continues to expand.
Wonderful food and attentive staff
Hi there, We are so glad to hear your culinary experience was fit with delicious cuisine and a hospitable staff. We strive to make every guest feel celebratory at The Vanderbilt, reimagined, and hope to welcome you back in the future.
They set the bar really high. Drinks and food could not have been better. Our bartenders Dean and Micah were professional and very friendly. I will definitely return!
Chef Austin has introduced a very audacious and innovative selection of foods, with defining touches that clearly emphasize specific flavors that complement superbly with each other. Every dish has at least one culinary surprise. The service was impeccable: attentive and courteous without being intrusive and unctuous or overly familiar. The venue, now divided into three completely different ambiences (garden, conservatory and dining room) remains one of the most attractive in Newport. The location is far enough from Thames Street to be quiet and exclusive, but close enough to be very convenient. The wine selection by the glass was excellent, but surely the by-the-bottle selection could be scaled a bit differently from what amounts to an almost exclusively high-end list.
Fantastic location . . . food was ok . . . service was sooo slow!
Dear raidersix2002, We are so glad you could dine with us at The Vanderbilt. We are sad to hear about service time and will alert our team to improve experiences in the future. We hope to welcome you in again to experience The Vanderbilt, reimagined.
Great service but very limited menu with no vegetarian entrees although they agreed to make one.
Main dining room extremely dark but garden room is much better. This could be a prime dining destination in Newport but seems a work in process.
The roof was awesome- but dinner was awful
Dear EricK, We are saddened to hear your culinary experience was less than perfection. While our Roof Deck is a wonderful place to spend the evening, we hope to welcome you back for an amazing meal in The Dining Room at The Vanderbilt or The Conservatory to wow you with classic New England fare with a modern twist.
Expected a nice fine dining experience. Was disappointed. Salad was so overly dressed with vinegar that burned my palate. Food portions were small, main dish was edible but nothing special. Restaurant is pricey, though I wouldn’t return even if my dinner was free.
Do not recommend.
Delicious brunch. Highly recommend.
Am unbelievable experience start to finish, thanks to Dwayne my server for his perfect suggestions and brilliant wine pairings. A truly memorable evening with delicious fare!
Very limited menu, although what we had was good, well prepared and served. Seems they are in transition to redo menu and dining room, it is located now in an informal greenhouse type structure. Server was excellent, friendly and energetic. From description thought the restaurant would be more upscale, but turned out only the prices were and so the value was not so much there. Very limited wine selections, small pours for the price, although they do pour a taste so you can try before getting the full glass. Cocktails were good.
Overall was OK in an interesting hotel but nothing special.
Out door courtyard was nice
Service was god awful
First and foremost, the service was excellent. The staff is smart, young, ambitious kids who are experts in customer service. They should open a school.
The food was excellent, the sauces where exceptional.
Especially the buerre Parmesan fondue that came with the stuffies. I actually dreamt about that sauce.
I’m loath to write this because I don’t want reservations to become more difficult but they deserve accolades.
Staff was very pleasant and a charming location. Menu was limited, but everything we ate was delicious! Caesar salad with lobster was perfect!
Service was very slow and incompetent. They refused to substitute chips for another side even though there were was someone in our party with dietary restrictions. Ran out of lobster rolls and then the replacement burger was undercooked and sent back. Ambience was the only highlight.
The restaurant is currently being renovated, so we were seated outside, under an awning, nice, sheltered and comfortable despite poor weather. Food quality, service, and ambiance all outstanding, would happily recommend.
Great foods great staffs
Food very nice, service a bit shaky. Early arrival ensured an "inside" table in the conservatory otherwise "outside" in the garden under a tent on a cold, rainy evening. Look forward to the dining room reopening.
This is a beautiful hotel restaurant with a wonderful and diverse menu.
The mansion is going through some renovations so we ate in the patio. The food was good, reasonably priced but the service was slow. We noticed that there were 2 couples and us and it took over 25 minutes to get service. The waitress was very nice and pleasant but we noticed that another couple came in and got served right away. Not sure who they were but we would have loved to get that kind of service.
Oh, wow, this was a horrible dining experience. With the beautiful pictures and food pictures, I thought I was making a good decision. First thing: the waitress was very overwhelmed and the two support bus boy and water boy were of zero help to her. We had to ask for water 20 minutes into our wait, our drinks were never refilled and the food is delicious, but extremely overpriced. I chose the eggs Benedict with a poached egg that was fully cooked on top. $18 mimosa in a coupe glass is an absolute rip off. Five tables surrounding us were not cleaned off and reset the entire time we had breakfast. Oh, and the manager ~ she was interviewing a prospective employee in the outside dining area, clueless to what was going on and flirting heavily with the soon-to-be employee. Absolute rip off. AVOID.
I've eaten here twice and both times the food was subpar. First time the restroom was also dirty. The service is always fantastic, I wish the food was comparable.
The best team, fabulous chef and wonderful menu
The service was impeccable. The food was delicious beyond words. The ambiance was perfect! The service was outstanding!
Absolutely outstanding. We were greeted by the general manager, the host, and the head chef as we entered. We started with a ceviche tostada, followed by pickled scallops, followed by oysters and an amazing burrata salad. The main course was to die for.. consisting of the Waldorf salad with lobster and the Seabass. Both outstanding! We ordered a beautiful bottle of Pinot Noir, suggested by our waiter, after having two delicious martinis. We finished with berries, whip cream and chambord. The staff, service, food, quality, ambiance and management were top notch! We will definitely be back!
Fantastic meal! Server was well versed on wines and every item on the menu. Definitely a hidden gem.
There was no restaurant the address was not a restaurant update open table because it was a waste of my time it was closed that sounds good don’t talk when you’re on the breakfast one yeah oh yeah yeah
Understandably the renovations are ongoing but the signage was poor and we wandered around to get to the roof top and Then to the pavilion for dinner. Staff we very inexperienced and served side dishes without any cutlery , no bread just dry crackers , couldn’t find the valer to get our car and had to go into the kitchen ( trailer) and ask for help. The management was around and trying but missing the basics. We will go again as we love the roof top bar and we want this hotel to succeed despite so much turnover in ownership
Excellent food with good service. Thoroughly enjoyed the Tomahawk steak and the heirloom carrots.
The menu was limited, but everything was delicious.
I really enjoy coming to the Gwyne for brunch. Their price and value are out of this world, especially for Newport. Their menu is small, which might turn people off, but what they do they do so well! The main dining room is currently under renovations but the sunroom is a great backup for brunch. Might not be peoples ideal for dinner. I am a repeat customer and proud of it!
