Romantic setting - some of the best service in Newport
Awesome service with utmost etiquette.
Perfect atmosphere for our anniversary, waitstaff was remarkable and food was on point. The piano player added to our romantic evening.
Elsa, the server, was awesome. Very attentive and kind. Excellent service!
Food could have been better seasoned. Cocktails are on point!!
My husband and I went to the restaurant to celebrate his birthday. We definitely chose the right place! The service was impeccable, the food was outstanding. We happened to be there for Restaurant Week and each had a dinner from the prix fix menu: hanger steak for him, blackened cod for me. Delicious! We definitely recommend this restaurant.
Dinner was very good, although I didn't think the fish dish I had was all that special -- the potatoes were lacking flavor. My husband's steak was amazing. It was a windy night and the fireplace was kicking some smoke into the dining room, so it got to be a bit smoky by the time were were leaving. Our waitress was excellent, and the wine pairings were really nice. Great cocktail too.
the restaurant week menu was amazing value, and we had a wonderful evening. Great staff, live piano music and cocktails.
Everything from start to finish was excellent.
We both felt it was one of our best meals ever. We were both so pleased with everything, including our wine choice. Delicioso!
Loved the live music also.
Service and food were excellent. Ambiance very good and piano music a real nice touch. We sat with our backs to the bar, which was very busy and a bit noises. A very fine spot and we will be back!
My wife and I were celebrating Valentine’s day. Food, service and and piano were outstanding!
Excellent ambiance, food and service from our waitress Elsa
Excellent food, service and ambiance. We enjoyed a lovely birthday dinner. Everything was delicious.
We came in from the cold for lunch to find an empty dinning room. We had very good clam chowder, but at $18 for a moderate size bowl, way overpriced! You can get the same thing for half the price all over Newport. Good food, but I really wouldn't recommend to a friend.
BEAUTIFUL restaurant! Lovely setting for a romantic meal, special occasion or just for a wonderful dining experience .
My only ask is that they reconsider charging $18 for a CUP of New England Clam Chowder- ouch, that hurt!
Had an excellent Christmas dinner at the Vanderbilt Grill. Everything about it was top-notch: the food, the service (especially the service), the ambiance, the live music, the cocktails. All made for a truly memorable evening. We'll definitely return.
Great food and nice service on Xmas
Awesome! The best service and awesome food!
Excellent food. Steak was awesome! Service was great.
Perfection on every level!
It was fabulous One of the most beautiful evenings of my life. Very romantic! There is nothing like having a pianist playing on a grand piano. The food was amazing and wine list interesting.
Wonderful service and live piano playing. Lovely room, unhurried and uncrowned. Food was good.
Saturday night reservations, 6:15p. Upon being seated we were informed that the N.Y. Strip would not be available as they were out of it! Leaving only Lamb Chops the only meat entree on the menu (besides a hamburger). Cocktails took a loooooong time to arrive. The ambiance was very nice, pianist/singer was also enjoyable. Would considering trying a brunch in the spring when outdoor seating is available. Overall was not impressed.
Experience was great from start to finish! Came here for Restaurant Week for lunch but the food was great and service was top-notch (s/o to our server Giopaolo!) - will definitely come back!
Wonderful service and excellent food and wine. We had a very nice time.
Ambiance was great Loved the roaring fire and piano player. Service was poor. No one came over to check in us when our dinners came out. Several of our dinners were cold. I️ had mussels and never got a extra plate for shells. Ordered tea to go with dessert and dessert was done before the tea came out. Just would expect better service and food quality for a restaurant like this
Service and food were both outstanding - 12 out of 10 :)
Very nice atmosphere, the Gatsby like art and the piano music made it an exceptional evening.
Thanks he staff was very helpful, even showed us around the hotel area. I pledge to stay over the summer and let my guests have the house!
Beautiful dining room with attentive service and excellent cuisine. The scallops were absolutely delicious. The grilled peach salad with chicken was refreshing, light, and beautifully seasoned. The piano player was exceptional. Great bar. Great cocktails. Great evening.
Food was not up to par for the price. Otherwise , the service was very attentive and nice.
Great pianist/vocalist. That's a tough gig, but good song selection, she found spots to get creative (albeit tastefully), and she kept my interest despite the limitations of working the dinner crowd. Musical and surprisingly virtuosic.
The food, not so much. Very simple menu - steak, fish, chicken, no creativity. We both got the impression the restaurant was brand new, with staff that seemed to be actively in-training, and food that was mediocre. The environment was lovely, although it was about 1/4 full on a Saturday night, for reasons that soon became clear. We left large bits of appetizer and entree still on our plates, due to disinterest. The wine list wasn't awful, but the cocktails were bland and fairly lifeless (although the glasses were full, so not all bad). We don't plan to return.
A bit of a disappointment - due to other reviews, we planned this as the last night of a 3-night anniversary trip. We would have done infinitely better to have eaten at Bouchard each night, which was truly fantastic, and what we had been hoping for at the Vanderbilt Grill (The Breakers, also by the Vanderbilts, was a great 2 hours - this restaurant did not live up to the name).
They would do well to hire a skilled, creative chef and give him time to develop - we suspect that the current staff is under orders to keep it simple, which led to a meal that was sorely lacking, particularly at this price point and in this environment.
Do not pay cash. They have no idea what they are doing. Gave us wrong change back and took foreverrrrr but selfish food and nice ambiance
The Vanderbilt Grill is amazing! GianCarlo was the best waiter - attentive and knowledgeable while letting us enjoy ourselves. His recommendation of the pork roast and wine was beyond yummy. It was so romantic to eat outside at night - they even had a piano player serenading us! All in all the BEST eating experience we had on our trip to Newport RI.
A lovely old world gem in the heart of bustling Newport. We were there on a beautiful September day and ate brunch outside in the courtyard. The food was fresh and delicious, the service was gracious and it was just an overall perfect experience.
This restaurant deserves NO stars. The wonderful piano player was the only redeeming factor. Waiter was very uncomfortable, we waited forever for everything....we arrived and waited when only one other table was seated (with our reservation). One server for the entire dining room. Other customers walked out after being served - we should have heeded the warning. Our three entrees were cold and inedible. Manager came and apologized but did not offer any solutions other than to say they had a large party in another room. My halibut was served on a white plate, soggy breadcrumbs without any side or garnish - unappealing and it tasted worse. We were not charged for the entrees but it was too late to change venues. Our last night in Newport offered one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. Sad to end such a wonderful trip on a sour note. Not sure who rated this restaurant previously with such high ratings.....will do my homework before I make another reservation.
My wife and I had eaten here last spring and had a very good meal and experience. Consequently, we were very much looking forward to returning.
It took an exceptionally long time for our drinks to be served despite the fact that it was not that crowded.
The dinner order also took a very long time to be served. While waiting, we ordered another round of drinks and pointed out to the waiter that one of the martinis in the first round was nowhere near a full drink. The second martini was served full, but the only reason for this was that it was loaded with ice which was inconsistent with the order that it was to be shaken with the ice on the side. If you subtract the ice, the second drink had less in it than the first.
The lamb chops ordered were tough and fatty and the pasta dish was bland and lukewarm. We ordered a strawberry shortcake to share for dessert and while waiting, we ordered a second glass of wine. Instead of bringing a new glass, the waiter poured the wine into the first glass which still had wine in it. Apparently realizing his mistake, he turned back and poured a little more wine into the glass, but it still did not in the aggregate amount to a full second glass.
When the desert arrived, the biscuit on which the strawberries were served was stale, hard as a rock and difficult to even cut. When we brought this to the waiter's attention, he was apologetic, took it off the bill and told us that he would have the manager come over to speak with us. Subsequently we were told that the manager was "too busy" to come over.
My wife and I are used to paying top dollar at local restaurants during the height of the summer season. However, we have a reasonable expectation that the service, food and overall dining experience will be commensurate with the prices charged. Vanderbilt totally failed to live up to this standard. We will not be returning.
So Lovely! The piano music was delightful and the wait staff incredible. I enjoyed my dishes more than my spouse, but we both thought it was exceptional.
It’s an old school experience . Beautiful setting, very quiet, food was better than average....but didn’t blow my socks off.
We had a wonderful dinner on the outdoor patio with a great live jazz group...
WE REALLY ENJOYED THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE MUSIC. IT WAS EXPENSIVE. I WOULD CHOOSE MENU SELECTIONS MORE CAREFULLY NEXT TIME. BUT WOULD DEFINITELY RETURN.
