Delicious food, beautiful setting
What a disappointment- we booked this for a special birthday brunch and there was nothing special about it. So disappointing! Drinks took forever and it wasn't busy- had to ask for butter and jam and ketchup for our breakfast food and by the time the server brought it to us most of our party was already done with their breakfast- who brings dry toast out for breakfast without the proper condiments? For being tagged as an upscale establishment- this was anything but! And to top it off- we SPECIFICALLY told the waitress that one of our guests was allergic to strawberries and what came on her breakfast? Fresh fruit on the side of the dish that had strawberries in it- !
Great service and delicious food. The pianist was fantastic also.
Was impressed with our experience at the Vanderbilt Grill. If you get the chance to sit outside on a nice day it really is a treat. The service was excellent, the food came out in a reasonable amount of time and our server was polite and professional. We ordered drinks which were crafted very well although on the pricy side. Overall, I'd go back on a return trip to Newport in the future.
Excellent food and service! Wonderful location to town in a cute boutique hotel.
Once again, this lovely space did not fulfill its promise...the service was fine (not quite up to the expectations of fine dining) but the food was just average. We regretably and uncomfortably had to ask for our ap (the lobster-crab fritter) to be returned..they were burned. The server claimed that they always came out that color (black) but offered to replace them. The replacements were a toasted brown and tasty enough. As to the rest of the meal, the preparations were OK. The entrees are a protein only dish..sides are ordered separately. They are pricey ($7+) and very small..not sufficient to share as we were told. I'm not an advocate of enormous amounts of food on a plate but the portions here were the other extreme, especially given the price point. All in all, the cuisine and dining experience just didn't deliver - especially when you're anticipating a fine dining experience!!
Try to sit outside. The patio is magical
Beautiful evening in the garden. Wonderful service from a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. A real gem in the heart of Newport.
Had a wonderful night with my children. A birthday treat! Food was excellent, obliged my teenage son with a special burger. Josh our server was so attentive. The chef came out to greet us. Overall the atmosphere was excellent. Would highly recommend!
Splendid. Wonderful food, beautiful room, extraordinary music. Don't be intimidated by formal description of the restaurant. Had a lovely dinner with my daughters.
We had a delicious meal with wonderful service marred only by a very large party who apparently did not get served as quickly as they felt they should. It was very clear that staff were doing their very best to accommodate them a best they could, but towards the end, the party was somewhat loud and raucous and complained loudly which we found in very poor taste. My concern is that they will rate this restaurant poorly which will not reflect the beautiful setting and fine dining that is available here. Service is impeccable and I would recommend it highly. I think the occasion and the expectations of this large party were more the problem than anything else. I did note they asked for the check to be itemized and split into at least a dozen different bills and the staff accommodated them beautifully and without complaint. Our meal was amazing, I will be back and I highly recommend this restaurant
Although the small table and the folding chairs were not really comfortable, the excellent food and the lovely garden setting made for a wonderful dinner experience
The steak and lamb chops were cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly but not intrusive. An unexpected bonus was the piano music. Christine created the perfect ambiance with her beautiful voice and skillful playing!
Had Sunday brunch out on the back patio- it was simply delightful! Quiet and quaint listening to the fountain and not at all crowded and loud like so many other Newport brunch spots on the beaten paths of Broadway or Thames St. the food did take a bit longer than usual to come out, and certainly was more expensive but to avoid the wait, crowd, and noise it was well worth the extra $20 for two!
We sat in the conservatory area and the food and service was great.
I actually missed my reservation. I couldn't find parking. 40 minutes late, they sat me and the chef cooked. It was awesome.
The staff was professional and sweet. It meant the world to the traveler that was alone.
The food was disappointing at best. My girlfriend got the swordfish- it was dry and burnt. I got the burger which was ok, but overpriced. Libations were fine but not outstanding. Environment was ok, a bit old and in need of renovation. Waitress was great. Would not recommend
The Vanderbilt Grill is located in the Vanderbilt Hotel--- which is something we typically avoid--but we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, service was prompt and the dining room is lovely. We began our meal with a drink in the roof-top bar which overlooks Newport Harbor and that was a fun time! Lots of young people. But the dining room is quiet and elegant. Our dishes were perfectly prepared!
This is a lovely restaurant. The food is excellent. Everyone makes the customers feel special. Great time. They also have a roof where one can have after dinner or pre-dinner drinks.
Very fancy restaurant in the Vanderbilt Grace Hotel. Service was excellent and the food was very well prepared. A bit pricey for the foods with all sides being ala carte.
So many things to say but if you want elegance, class, fantastic food, great atmosphere, and to be treated with respect, The Vanderbilt will meet and I am sure exceed your expectations! We were greeted by Edward, the Dining Room Supervisor and he introduced us to our server, Maricel. As Maricel was seating us she congratulated us on our 35th wedding anniversary, which I noted on Open Table. Clearly she was THE BEST at her job and just a fabulous person. We sat outside in the garden area which was just breathtaking. Maricel took our order and a few minutes later Edward stopped by and congratulated us on our anniversary as well. Edward then came over with two classes of champagne and offered his best wishes. Lunch was amazing and at this time, I thought the afternoon just couldn't get better. Edward then suggested we may like to have drinks and enjoy the view on the roof. We took him up on his suggestion where we sat quietly and enjoyed just a fantastic view of the bay.
We have been to Rhode Island quite a few times over the past 10 years. Of all the places we have been too, The Vanderbilt represents class, professionalism, and will make your visit last a lifetime.
Food was excellent. My only issue was the extremely limited menu. Wonderful ambiance and an excellent location for cocktails on the rooftop bar and garden patio. Overall a very relaxing evening.
Food delivery was extremely slow, ambiance was great.
Excellent service and attention from the moment we walked in. Once Maureen our server learned it was our anniversary I felt like we were Vanderbilt's ourselves. Food was excellent - chicken and salmon dishes both cooked perfectly to make them tender and juicy, appetizers were delicious too as were the spreads served with the bread before the meal. And dessert was a luscious cheesecake! Everything was delicious and the service was phenominal!
For the price the food and service was not worth it.
This is a gem on Mary Street in Newport! The food was excellent. The service was personal. The room, wood fire in the fireplace, and piano made it perfect! I would highly recommend this restaurant. We are going back when the outdoor terrace opens.
Amazing service, good food.
Our first time at Vanderbilt Grille - food, service, and the feel of the restaurant were outstanding. Great spot for special occasions - we went for our wedding anniversary. They even made us a personalized dessert plate.
8oz filet was mouth watering, had fingerling potatoes & asparagus. Fantastic meal. beautiful setting
Went there for a romantic date and fell in love with this place. Historical and beautiful dining room with wonderful service. Thought it was great and then a live piano player showed up and starting playing and I was in heaven! Food was magnificent. Can't wait to go back!!
My wife and I dined here on a Wednesday night in April, so the restaurant was empty (literally, we were the only 2 people there). We sat at a table closest to the fireplace, and enjoyed an amazing meal with attentive service and great drinks. My wife is vegetarian, so sometimes it's hard to find 'fancy' places with good choices for her, but the selection was excellent and we enjoyed everything we had.
Would like to thank the staff for a great night. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.
All the staff were most attentive and professional. Loved the conservatory for lunch
It is always a treat to go to this restaurant. We went for dinner. The dining room is beautiful. We sat in front of the fireplace--but not to close. Great. The food is so good here. The wait staff is perfect. A great experience. It always is!
Friendly, accommodating staff, great waitress! She offered very helpful suggestions about ordering!
We decided to check out the Vanderbilt Grille during Newport Restaurant Week, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The service we received from Tony and Joshua was impeccable, the food was fantastic, and the wine pairings were perfect. We very much look forward to returning!
Loved everything about it. The atmosphere, the history of the place, the food, the ambience etc. The servers were all very friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend!
Great service and a great value during Newport Restaurant Week. Piano player during Saturday night dinner.
We were staying at the hotel and just happened to be there during restaurant week. The chefs menu selections were varied and beautifully presented, and the wine pairings -- perfect. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. The setting is lovely. I don't think we could even suggest how to improve upon the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We are looking forward to a return visit.
Superb in every way. A unique boutique hotel with ambiance galore and the best offerings of all food and beverages , even homemade ice cream!!!!
A definite "must try" !!!!
