The Twisted Frenchman
The Twisted Frenchman is a modern French restaurant located on the 2nd floor of 5925 Baum Boulevard. Carrying on the tradition of the original location, Chef Andrew Garbarino will take guests through a tasting experience of 4, 8, 14 or 21 courses. Each dish is a sensory delight, prepared with modern techniques to immerse guests in their meal.
Patrons will have cocktails available from La Riviera, which draws upon the ideology of the kitchen; to make each beverage an unforgettable experience. Classic cocktails will pay homage to their origins while being transformed into new creations.
The wine list will offer selections from classic French regions focused on terroir-driven growers and producers, both by the glass and by the bottle. The sommelier team will also have wine pairings available for each tasting menu.
My wife and I paid our first visit since the restaurant moved to the new location and we had an absolutely lovely, elegant meal. We chose the 4 course meal so chose each course from a selection of several dishes instead of the chef’s choice 8 or 12 course meal. The flavors are refined and each dish is presented beautifully. I had the wine pairing which seemed a very good deal at an additional $35 for what seemed a full glass with each of the 4 courses. The service from the staff was impeccable. We shall be back!
Only true fine dining restaurant in Pittsburgh. We've followed Andrew across locations and find he continues to provide the best food in Pittsburgh on the par if not superior to the private clubs. Last night's leek & potato soup with white truffle foam was as fine a dish as I have been served anywhere. Wine list is strong as well and priced amazingly close to cost.
Food was wonderful 😊
The entire experience was outstanding. Hospitality in particular was quite pleasant. Food was delicious.
The menu is inventive and good, with many dishes well done and always well presented. Beet dish and soup were especially good. Boullabaise was seriously undercooked. Our evening got off to a bad start with table not ready, being sent downstairs to the bar, then up too early, back down, and finally seated 45 minutes late. We know delays sometimes happen, but the man in charge was not gracious in handling the situation. Our waiter was excellent, though. Overall this restaurant has lots of potential for a special meal, but things just didn''t go so well for us that night.
Service was slow. We were there for 2.5 hours. Food was good. Rich. But I wasn’t blown away.
Beautiful ambiance, and fine dining all in one. Third time back and perfection each time.
Very accommodating to vegetarian and gluten free diners, beautiful presentation, wine pairing was perfect
Decided to give the Twisted Frenchman a try because of the Pgh30 specials going on around town, which gives you a chance to try select restaurants around the area at a pre fixe menu for a discounted price (although still ranging from $30-39). Overall experience was ok, but not great. The restaurant is very very quiet.. almost too quiet. No music could be heard and felt like we could hear everything everyone was saying. We had to ask for the pgh30 “special” menu... and once we did our waiter quickly was less interesting impressing us. The potato leek soup was very good (could’ve been little hotter) and the chicken poussain entree was just ok. Again nothing extraordinary. Dinner Portions are super tiny. Had the dark chocolate soufflé which was the best part... melted in our mouths! Wine was waaay overpriced with not many mid priced selections.
Overall, it was a great way to try a restaurant we would not normally go to, but we felt like the staff dismissed us since we were not paying regular prices. So why participate in the pgh30 if you’re not ok with folks coming in to actually try it out?!?
This was a date night for my husband and I. Our first two courses and dessert were amazing. Beautiful presentation and simply delicious. The third course was a bit of a let down. I would definitely go back. Great place for an intimate dinner or group, high end dining experience. Our waiter was top notch.
Best meal we have ever had in Pittsburgh. Hands down.
Wonderful restaurant with quiet, European ambiance. It was nice to actually be in a restaurant that was quiet enough to enjoy conversation and not have to shout. Service was excellent and attentive. Timing of the 4 course meal was spot on. And the food was creative and delicious with sauces that enhanced the flavors of the food without being overwhelming. We will be back!
Everything is perfect at the Twisted Frenchman, a special occasion restaurant.
Nice place to splurge for special occasions.
Great food and service !
Enjoyed the service. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive. The food was impeccably prepared and uniformly delicious.
Great for a date night. They were serving a Valentine’s Day menu, which was not mentioned on the website and wasn’t expecting that. Really wanted duck but got filet. The overall quality of the 5 courses were good except for the lobster risotto. The risotto was slightly under the lobster was slightly over and the filet was nothing to write home about. Highlight was actually the cocktail before dinner, the champagne, and the tomato soup. I’ve been to many Michelin star restaurants and know why fine dining is. This one came up just a little short. But I would certainly come back and give them another shot. Overall food was good not amazing. Service was good not great. Wine pairing was acceptable however too heavy of wine to pair with the filet. Heavy cab base overpowered the filet making the meat taste flat compared to the heavy wine, a lighter red would have been better maybe a pinot noir or a merlot based. Will go again when I can pick from their 4 course menu. Presentation was great just some of the seasoning fell a bit flat to me. However i did hear the chef was not feeling all that well on the night I went (something about he had some bad chicken at some point) overall good date experience.
The food and wine were brilliant! It was valentines week so we had the price fixe menu— I especially liked the foie gras and hope it’s on their regular menu. It was a wonderful meal and I’m looking forward to the next time.
Was such a wonderful evening with a delicious experience!
The food stood up to this highly respected restaurant’s reputation. We had the eight course meal, which was exceedingly satisfying, And the server recommended some nice wine when we did not choose the wine pairing.
Excellent fine dining restaurant. As someone who was born in Pittsburgh and was back for a visit it was great to see this type of experience being offered in Pittsburgh. Great experience all around!
This was one big disappointment from the moment you walk in . I’ve never written a review on a restaurant before .
I just don’t go back if it was a bad experience . But I’m going to give this place the lowest score possible , so nobody else will suffer the waste of time and money .
Made reservation for a special occasion and all 4 people
In my party was disappointed , and believe it or not after
Leaving we went to another place to eat . I had the
Steak as my main course and it was the size of an
Ice cube and tuff.
I read about this place before going . It mentioned this
Multi million dollar renovation ,, and I thought “wow”
This place must be great ,,,what a joke !
If you make the mistake of going you’ll see what I mean
And you will regret it .
I read every review posted before going , they where 90%
Obviously they are fake .
Other than Uber having the wrong address, my new bride and I thoroughly enjoyed everything. The food was outstanding and the chef sent recommendations during our 4 course meal. Highly recommend!
The food is outstanding, as are the wine pairings! The service is excellent! Really a lovely foodie experience. The decor and ambience could do with a change.
I was looking forward to eating at the much heralded Twisted Frenchman. I love the decor and ambiance. The service was impeccable. The food was very good but almost every dish other than chocolate souffle was a step or two short of excellent. The souffle was incredible; light, creamy, rich, and a mind-blowing experience with each bite. The pate de champagne was excellent but there were only two 1/4 inch thick by 1 inch round pieces of pate. They could have splurged for at least 3. I had the foie gras was cooked perfectly the but the brioche was a little tough and the balsamic reduction overpowered all of the other flavors. I would eliminate or seriously reduce the amount of balsamic. The bouillabaisse suffered from the same issue as the foie gras. The seafood was overpowered by the bouillabaisse reduction. By itself, I liked the reduction but I could barely taste the seafood with it. The prawn was excellent and because it sat on top, I was able to eat it with minimal reduction disruption. The scallop was cooked perfectly and had a great taste when not overpowered by the reduction. The piece of fish drowned in the reduction. It was a shame because the dish has the potential to be excellent but it is not very well balanced. Lighten up on the liquid. My guest had the trout boudin and filet of beef both of which she gave good reviews but I thought the two pieces of filet were on the small side. She is also not nearly as critical of food as I am.
I like this restaurant and I will be back to give the other dishes a try. The creativity is there but the balance is a little off. If the chef can find that balance, it may take months to get a table.
Outstanding! Amazing food. Beautiful room. Could be best in town!
Superb food in an elegant atmosphere with excellent service
We enjoyed dining at The Twisted Frenchman on January 15th @ 9:00pm. The staff were attentive, professional and friendly. The food was excellent and I enjoyed the Chardonnay wine that our server picked to go with my meal. Phenomenal souflees, too.
Was looking forward to the 8 course tasting menu but went during restaurant week so the courses were limited. Great food artistically presented and the wine pairings were spot on! Looking forward to going back.
I took my girlfriend out to enjoy an amazing 8 course tasting menu. the experience was interactive and welcoming. Met the kitchen staff and had a short informative conversation with chef Andrew. The service staff was informative and patient with questions. all around amazing flavors and service! thanks!
I rate this visit very high mostly based on our prior dining experience which was excellent. However, this time the food was just ok. Had a 7:30 reservation and by 8pm we were the only diners.
We went for New Year’s Eve and had the five course pre fixe menu and wine pairing. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent. The ambiance was very quiet and intimate which made for a nice relaxing evening. The only thing we did not like was being seated right next to another couple when there were many open seats in the restaurant. Overall, it was a great experience. We will be back again.
Way too bright, average food, and features Fois Gras whichbis about the cruelest food there is. Would not go back and would not recommend.
Service was exceptional as is always the case - as was the food. Wine tastings were a bit disappointing - the wines chosen were so subtle that they really did not seem to come out at all with the food to which they were paired. Definitely an exceptional french restaurant - we may just choose our own bottle of wine next time instead of the wine tastings.
We went to celebrate our anniversary and had the 8 course meal with the wine pairing. The presentation of each course was exquisite and the portion size was perfect. We left there quite satisfied struggling to finish our delicious desert. Each course was paired with a different quality wine served in a new glass each time. We would definitely recommend this restaurant especially when celebrating a special occasion.
Everything was excellent. Very interesting and tasty. Service was attentive but not rushed. Wine pairing was helpful and educational. First time there but definitely not the last.
8-course tasting menu, wine pairing, chocolate hazelnut mousse, espresso. Food was expertly crafted with great respect to the ingredients. The wine pairing was just as integral to the entire cullinary experience. The presentation to the explaination and flawless service of Brian our Garçon are the reasons why i would consider this evening's dinner to be among my best dining experiences in Pittsburgh!
We enjoyed the four course with wine pairing menu. The entire meal was perfectly executed, and the wine pairings were really well done.
We went to “kick off” the holiday season formally and couldn’t have had a more lovely evening. We opt d for the eight course meal and we’re not disappointed. Each course was better than the previously— absolutely amazing!! Treat yourself - amazing food and wine!
