The Tobacco Company Restaurant
Wonderful experience , both food and service were excellent . They should have opened the second bar because there were a lot of people. Will be back !
Totally good experience.
Our server, Spenser was great.
My only complaint is no points for reservation.
We were in Richmond to celebrate my husband‘s birthday, and were very excited to go back to the tobacco company after we had had a really positive experience a few years ago. Unfortunately, this visit to the tobacco company was really disappointing. Starting from when we arrived, the hostess invited us to sit and have drinks while we waited for our table to be prepared, but the cocktail waitress was unfriendly bordering on surly when we ordered a drink, then never came back to our table and couldn’t be found for when we needed to close out our tab to be seated at our table. It took us 10 minutes looking for her and we had to go up to the bar and then talk to other waiters to get the check.
The ambience in the restaurant is really wonderful, and we had hoped that our meal would be a more positive experience. Unfortunately, we were also disappointed by the quality of the food. Only one of the four dishes that we ordered was good- the scallops. The salmon was alright but overpriced. The prime rib was gristly with very little flavor, also overpriced. The cauliflower steak was not cooked through and still cost $20. The drinks were fairly priced, but not impressive.
They very kindly brought us a free dessert for my husband to celebrate his birthday. He chose a bread pudding, which was also underwhelming in flavor.
No one asked us how our food was, so we never had a chance to really offer feedback.
We used to recommend this restaurant to all our friends visiting Richmond, but won’t anymore!
The restaurant is beautiful. The service was outstanding. We felt the experience captured old historic Richmond. The food was very tasteful. We will be back.
Haven’t been here since the fire and it nice to see that nothing was lost....still a great night out
This was our 29th year going to Tobacco Co.
Since our first meal on our wedding night, we have never been disappointed with either the food or service. The atmosphere has always been stellar and the the location is phenomenal for staying in Richmond. We love the scallops, crab and the Filet Oscar has never missed - juicy, cooked to perfection and the sauces really make the meal. Looking forward to our next visit.
The food, service, and environment was OK. For the prices, the food was mediocre. We ordered things that the waiter said was their signature dishes (prime rib and steak oscar). The service was slow and disorganized, but very nice. The table was too small for four people (and we had reservations for four). The room was loud, but it's a pretty space.
Great place... Keith took care of us exceptionally well. Out of town guest enjoyed from start to finish
Food was great, service was great, it was our anniversary so they gave us a free dessert
Been to many steakhouses for n my day, from chains like Morton's to single proprietor such as Manny's. The Tobacco Company is now one of my all-time Top 5 both for quality of food and service. Had a delightful time, and plan on returning every time I am in Richmond.
Party of 14 and we all loved our entrees. We ordered several appetizers-poke, spinach & artichoke dip, calamari, fried oysters, and coconut shrimp. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food and the cocktails on the first floor in the small bar in the back were spectacular. Great atmosphere and we all said we will return.
The food and ambiance were fabulous - as was the service! We’ve been coming to the Tobacco Co. for over 30 years! Our parents brought us when we were UR students (my husband and I met there!) and now we’ve been bringing our 2 kids (both went to UR, one is still there!). This was our last Parents Weekend and it only seemed appropriate to eat there - exactly where we started! Thanks for the wonderful food and wonderful memories! Perfection!
Our waiter was fantastic. His name was Nick. He was really funny and made the whole dinner an entire experience, not just a dinner! He's good at what he does!!
We celebrated our 20th wedding anniversry here. They sat us in a place that was semi secluded and gifted us with free dessert to share. The food was excellent and our server was very attentive. It was a little noisy at times but it's a busy popular restaurant so I guess one can expect the noise level to be high. Overall it was great and we will return.
It was a great place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The atmosphere, food and service were all wonderful.
Beautiful place. Drinks were good, food not so much. Cold and over salted. Service was great though. As beautiful and historic as this place is, the food was a real disappointment:(
Our first time here and it did not disappoint, service was wonderful! The restaurant and antique elevator are beautiful. We enjoyed looking at all the exquisite glass pieces.
Service was great and food was delicious! The ambiance is so relaxing and the restaurant is so unique.
A nice evening in a nice atmosphere. The only negative— their website says they have valet parking. When we arrived, the greeted at the door said they don’t have valet parking and have not had it during his tenure. He said it must be an old website. It wasn’t. It was their current site. Other than that, a very nice evening.
Very nice place to take a group
Staff and facilities and food were excellent!
Prime rib and scallops were both delicious dishes and the servers were helpful but not overbearing. The decor is fantastic--1920s gilded age + greenery in a beautifully renovated space with lots of character!
Nick our waiter was extremely attentive to our needs and could often predict and act before we had to even ask.
Food was much better then I expected from such a landmark beautiful venue.
Absolutely will come again when I’m visiting Richmond.
Not inexpensive, but still a good value for the experience.
Excellent great food and service, beautiful venue
This was the second time my wife and I have had date night at the tobacco company. The service is great and the food is always top notch.
We took our grandson, a student at Richmond , to the Tobacco Company for dinner on a Friday night. We were seated on time, the waitress was attentive, coming by frequently to check on us. The menu was diverse, with the addition of specials. The food was delicious, prepared perfectly as ordered. The ambiance was cheerful but quiet enough to carry on a conversation. Our grandson really enjoyed it as well
We will definitely return again.
Absolutely!!! So many delicious food choices...and the sides, HELP ME! Feeling the need to go back to cover what I did not order .....very worthwhile....the history in the building makes it all the more special....This is a place you need to have on your bucket list!!
Amazing! Service impeccable by Kathleen! It was so good to be back in such a memorable location, given I grew up going to the restaurant and the club.
Fantastic property. Loved the atmosphere. Food and staff were both great. Would recommend to anyone in the area.
When I made my reservations i identified that it was my wife's birthday, thinking that something would be done to mark that occasion. Nothing was done. We have ate at other establishments where some was done to make the occasion.
Always love eating here! Food was excellent, Service was wonderful, and atmosphere was fantastic.
Can't wait to come back.
Service was excellent (as always)! Food was prepared as we requested and it was delicious. The butter cake is always a favorite of ours and again, it didn't disappoint.
Our server Nick was amazing!! Would definitely come back and ask for him.
I wasn't very happy with the service for such a 5 Star restaurant. The service meaning the food didn't come out at the same time. My husband ordered his soup late and he received his soup first. Then the wait staff bought out 1 more soup and a salad. Then after we thought they had forgotten one of the salads it finally came out. All of the soups and salads should have come out at the same time not sporadically. Would I recommend to a friend. The food was good but the service needs some work.
Our dinner was fabulous! I hadn’t been since they reopened and was eager to see how things were. It was exactly as I remembered. Food was delicious, service was great, and the building looks amazing. We had the best time!
We went here to celebrate our sons 20th Birthday. The dinner was great, our server was top notch.
Great dining experience. Food was excellent. Our waiter was attentive, professional and always showed up at just the right time. Would definitely go back.
Went there for 50th birthday and the Prime Rib was average. Same prime rib from RVA Diner, not Tobacco Company. Hondo's steak is better and rolls not the same as before.
Not sure I would return. Used to be a favorite place in Richmond.
This was a favorite of mine in my youth but it feels retro—and not in a good way. The cocktails were solid classics, the wine list was safe but good quality, and the food was fine. Our steaks were well prepared and flavorful. Our service was also professional and courteous. The challenge is the overall vibe just is neither fun nor hip. Most tables seemed to be large groups of family reunions or sororities just getting back for the fall semester. So the restaurant feels like a trip down memory lane more than a place to go for new adventures with friends—and it certainly isn’t a place for any culinary innovation. In a restaurant scene as dynamic as Richmond’s, this feels like a relic of the past that is sadly no longer worth visiting.
