The Tobacco Company Restaurant
Would recommend for an after work drink but they have a long way to go as far as food. The baked potato was very good, filet not the best for the $45 they charged for it. Onion soup couldn't eat and while they use to have outstanding bread, what they serve now tasted and looked like they were using out of date hot dog buns. We mentioned that to our waiter and he agreed saying allot of other customers said the same thing. It will be awhile before we go back. At least it doesn't smell as bad as it use to.
Loved it. Drinks were not the best and it is very noisy but the food is amazing
We were celebrating my husband’s 60th birthday and the staff was outstanding! I had requested via open table a no sugar added dessert, fully expecting to purchase it - and likely pay extra - they wouldn’t hear of it and treated my husband to assorted berries. The food was impeccable, drinks on point and the after dinner coffee to die for! We are looking forward to our next visit!
When you first walk in, you check in and the hostess will either take you to the 2nd or 3rd level for dining. There are two bars on the first be level.
They are known for the prime rib so half our table got prime rib and the other half got Ribeyes. We ordered some additional sides (whipped potatoes, sauteéd spinach, and button mushrooms), but we did not know our steaks already came with a baked potato, which was pretty hard and not cooked as much as we all preferred but maybe that's how they do it there. Steaks overall were just ok and we didn't feel it was worth it for the price we paid. Prime ribs were barely luke warm and we had to request an jus on the side. One prime rib was sent back and they gave us a new piece which was a lot hotter. Ribeyes are supposed to be the juiciest, most flavorful cut but all 3 of our Ribeyes had a lot of gristle and little flavor. It could have been our personal taste but all 6 of us felt the steaks were not seasoned as well as we would have liked. However, the ambience was nice. Not sure if I would care to come back though.
Everything was perfect. The service and the food were outstanding. I had one of the fillets which was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. It was one of the best steaks I have had in years.
We all enjoyed our most delicious meal! My wife and I have been there many times over the years and you are our "go to restaurant" when out of town guest come with us to R'mond.
They praised the food and the gorgeous setting... so much so, the gentleman will back in town for a BB&T meeting in a few weeks and plans to bring a group there.
Side note... I did get a slice of key lime pie to go and the crust was burnt or just different than your normal crust.
We sat at table #17. Great spot, very private and cozy. The atmosphere at your newly renovated restaurant was perfect! Ali, our waitress was fantastic.
The only complaint I have is that I ordered the 8 oz. lobster tail for $49 (I believe, the most expensive item on your menu). I expected it to be amazing! I received 2 small lobster tails that did not even look like lobster tails - yellowish in color, not white! It was like they were not fresh. I think they had been frozen too long. I did not complain to Ali, but I was very disappointed. Not sure if and when my husband will be back for dinner.
A great place to celebrate special occasions. Everything is well executed across the board. The only caveat is quality usually comes at a cost. Check the menu online before committing to this great experience so your evening doesn't end in sticker shock. I went with eyes wide open and and therefore ended on a high note with all my guests well pleased and myself in a good mood.
Just two of us and we asked for and got the third floor right on the railing, so that worked out well. Just missed Happy Hour by a few minutes while we had to wait for our table. Very enjoyable meal, would come more often but it’s a bit on the expensive side, between drinks at the bar and the dinner, total spent was about $200. So if you drink, you’re probably looking at about $100 per person!
Excellent customer service! Very knowledgeable on both food and wine. He made an excellent choice for our dinner wine & we were both very please
My crabcake was one of the best I’ve ever had, almost pure crap. The other two people in our party had steak and said that it was very bland
Our reservation was ready at the arranged time. Our waiter was very good. He brought table water that tasted like "city water", so we ordered a bottle of Pellegrino that solved the problem. My scallop dish was excellent especially with the butternut squash risotto. But the scallops were extremely salty. Strangely enough, there was not a chocolate dessert on the menu. Really? Waiter said they were redoing the menu; it had been temporary since the fire 3 months ago. Restaurant was in super condition as we hadn't been there for 30 years! New bars downstairs were stunning. Not sure the prices were in line with the quality.
Wife’s birthday staff and food excellent. Made her night
Ambiance, food, and service were absolutely fantastic! My wife and I were on our "last date" here right before our child is born and it was great. Things are pretty pricey though.
This was our first time back since the reopening. Everything was great.
Will definitely go back!
We had a wonderful experience at the Tobacco Company. We had a beautiful dining room just for our family. Our waiter, Keith, was very kind and attentive without being intrusive. We had a few requests in our reservation on open table, and every one was accommodated. It was a great evening and we are looking forward to our next visit!
Went back here to celebrate the anniversary of our first date, at the exact table we sat at two years ago. Staff was wonderful and accommodating to give us the table I’d requested. Best date spot in rva!
Waiter was super awkward to talk to. Food was great so it was just a service issue. Drinks were slow coming and hard to engage with.
Superior! What a special place!
I have visited The Tobacco Company Restaurant hundreds of times since it opened in 1977. Over the years, there were the obvious changes in food and service, but it was always within a “frame”, so one knew overall what to expect. My last visit, prior to Thursday night, was before the fire that devastated the restaurant. It was during that prior visit that it became apparent the food, service and ambiance were stunningly lacking.
After the fire, the restaurant was closed for repairs for over a year and after a long awaited reopening, The Tobacco Company Restaurant was back in business. Thursday night was my first visit since the reopening.
My wife and I were celebrating our half-Anniversary (when one was born in the 1940’s, waiting a whole year to celebrate anything, is not a good idea). We arrived around 8:30 and were seated on the second level...I can’t remember ever being seated on any other level. The ambiance of years gone, has returned. The space is clean, well appointed and one can “feel” a sense of pride that has returned to a deserving restaurant.
Our dinner selections were Prime Rib, and Wedge Salads. I would say that the food was good, well prepared and certainly within the original “frame” of expectation for the restaurant.
Our server was exceptional. Perhaps he was one of the top ten I’ve had over my lifetime. He made the evening enjoyable, beyond the food and ambiance.
I believe the restaurant is returning to its days of glory, and expect each successive visit to see more improvements as time passes.
We enjoyed coming back after the reopening! The food and atmosphere are excellent. The noise level is high-moderate. Our server had a large table and they took precedence over us, however, the server attempted to connect through the gentlemen standing nearby. As a former server, that balance between attending to a large table that will offer a possible hefty gratuity and offering the same attention to a small table is paramount to a dining experience everyone deserves.
Hosted a business dinner here and was extremely happy with the whole experience. Fantastic ambiance accentuated the wonderful steaks. Will definitely dine here on my next trip to Richmond.
We dined here over 20 years ago and had always wanted to return. It was even better than we remembered.
Happy Hour at the bar was on point and the 2 bartenders were awesome. Will be coming back on Sunday's for the drinks
Walked around the first floor; the lounge in the back is fabulously decorated. The lobster bisque is a pass; lots of lobster but they used way too much thickener and served too large a portion. My prime rib was tasty. Brussels sprouts too soft. Husbands steak Oscar was cooked perfectly but was salty. The peanut butter cheesecake was the highlight of the meal.
We loved it! It was our second time going and we absolutely look forward to the next time. Food and service were impeccable!
Great dining experience. Everything was excellent.
Allie made the evening with her wonderful personality and good eno
She was very helpful re wine selection and quick with any request
Meal was delicious
Atmosphere lively and polite
We had a great time and dinner. There were a few trips and falls but the staff handled it professionally.
Accidents happen. The food was first rate. Life is Short so you might want to experience The Tobacco Company Restaurant before you are done.
An outstanding dining experience in one of Richmond's great dining landmarks
Excellent experience, exceptional service. Olivia was great! Everything was delicious - the best meal we have ever had there. Love the new menu choices and decor - also happy to see some favorites are still on the menu...(butter cake.)
My wife and I ate here on a Saturday night. It was the first time we had been back since the restaurant reopened after the fire. We arrived before our reservation time, but were seated immediately. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer and split an arugula salad. The tomatoes came with four slices on the plate. They were more white than green and even after being fried, were very hard and tough to chew. We each ate one and decided to skip the other two. For the main course we ordered the NY Strip and the Pork Tenderloin. It took more than 1 hour from the time we placed our order until the main course arrived. The NY Strip looked more like a sirloin steak, and even though we asked for it to be prepared medium well, it was charred black and basically inedible. The manager offered to replace it, but after waiting an hour for the first one, we declined. The steak was served with Parmesan fries that were processed potato, not cut like steak fries. They were more like what you would expect from a fast food joint. At a price of $37 for the steak plate, it was a huge disappointment. The Pork Tenderloin was good, but not great. For $24 I was served four small pork medallions. The pork came with mashed sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts.
In the end they comped the steak. The atmosphere was nice, but the price of the food is way out of line with the quality of what is served.
We first parked next door at the public parking right next door on 12th Street (evenings and weekends the flat fee is $5). We arrived at 5:30 so we could have drinks before our 6:00 pm reservation and discovered there are now two bar areas to choose from! The previous Victorian Lounge is now a lovely bar area with tables. We went to the third our at 6:00 pm and loved the new booths! The Golden Swans were very cool too! I must say after reading some less than stellar reviews, I was a little afraid to come for a double birthday celebration, but we were more than happy! The couple dining with us were experiencing the restaurant for the first time and absolutely loved everything about it. We ordered Coconut Shrimp and it was wonderful, as was the She Crab Soup. Two of us ordered Salmon, one ordered Filet Mignon and one ordered Pork Loin. Everyone was more than happy with their meal. The waitress (who was very attentive) brought two free birthday desserts for the "birthday boys." The people at the next table even joined in singing happy birthday. The Tobacco Company is pricey but we felt the ambience and meals were worth it. When our friends couldn't decide on a wine, the waitress even brought samples so they could choose. They also brought us bread for the table twice! We all can't wait to go back!
A great meal with excellent service—Jade was the best! Worth every penny, highly recommend!
Amazing server and amazing food!
I UDC event at the Omni
The Tobacco Company is one of our favorite special evening restaurants. The building is exquisite and so is the service. The main room seating can get pretty loud so I was happy that we were able to reserve one of the private rooms, but the music speaker was directly over us which amplified the noise in the small space. Other than that it was a great evening, with even better food.
Tobacco Company is a great place to have a special dinner for two or a formal business dinner. Great to have them back.
Food and ambiance was generally good. One stake overdone but mgmt made right. Tenderloin a little dry but all other selections were good.
