The Tin Fox
Wanted to enjoy our experience there, the design is warm and inviting. Sadly the food does not come close to matching the decor, and the service was very slow, especially considering that the restaurant was 2/3 full at best.
First time at The Tin Fox and will be back. 3 of us dined there on a Friday night. Parking was not an issue with space out front and on the side street. Seating was comfortable and the noise level was thankfully moderate so we could actually have a conversation. One of our group ordered the fish fry, which was reportedly good. The fries were so appealing that the other two of us had to grab a few. The other two of us ordered the hangar steak. Lovely presentation--chimichurri over sliced steak served with mushroom and greens on a bed of potato puree. Service was attentive. Really liked this place and look forward to going back.
Very good food. The breakfast risotto was delicious, as was the French toast.
We went with a group of 5 for dinner on a Saturday night. We had a reservation through Open Table and we were greeted promptly by the friendly host. Our table was ready and our cocktails were good. Our server seemed a bit off, sort of brusque and annoyed with us but she may have had too many tables for much of our stay. The food was good---excellent Brussels sprouts small plate, I had the pasta with vegetables and chicken (very good but not remarkable) and my husband had the roasted chicken (he said it was actually very excellent.). We will return to the Tin Fox again!
The Thursday night date special at The Tin Fox is phenomenal! $45 total for an appetizer, bottle of win, two entrees and a dessert. Because it’s so inexpensive, I was expecting the food to be subpar- I was so wrong! This was one of the better meals I’ve had at a restaurant. I loved the Cabernet Sauvignon the meal came with, and thought both the roasted chicken and the bed of vegetables it came on were outstanding. Additionally, being gluten-free, I was initially worried about not being provided with options- however, all of the appetizers, entrees, and two of the dessert options were gluten-free (and still tasted so good!). This was the perfect meal and atmosphere for our anniversary celebration. Thanks Tin Fox- we will definitely be back to celebrate more special occasions!
8/3/19. Very disappointing. We were a table of seven. Three of us ordered the pasta. 10 minutes later, the wait person apologized and said they ran out and only two portions were available. I said no problem, I would have the tofu bowl ($15)instead. The portion size of this item was exceptionally small, approximately 1 cup of soupy noodles with 5 pieces of tofu in a wide, shallow bowl. Very poor value and not bad-tasting, just not good.
We had 2 orders of the fried cheese curds to share before our meals. Our wait person brought them out. The curds have maple syrup on them and needed to be eaten with forks, but we were given no appetizer plates. I asked for plates and our wait person told us she would get them, but only after she took everyone’s order and removed all of the menus from the tables. What was that about? Appetizers plates should ALWAYS come out before or at the same time as the appetizer. Furthermore, the curds were not hot by the time we received the plates and I was annoyed.
We were all visiting from out of state and we dined at local restaurants for all 5 nights while there. The Tin Fox was the only disappointment and I suspect the locals may feel the same way, as there was almost no one there on a Saturday night. We had great food and service at Lucille and Samba Brazilian Steakhouse, to name a couple.
ONLY MADISON RESTAURANT TO OFFER GF (GLUTEN FREE) CHEESE CURDS!!!!!!!! I don't really need to say more than that.
Second time here for brunch, will definitely be back for a third! Awesome food, cool interior, and great drinks!
Very good restaurant with casual ambiance and solid food.
We were surprised by how imaginative the dishes were. Excellent
The date night special was delicious and affordable. Great restaurant!
Chicken was too salty! Three out of eight complained about that. Most said they would not go back. Service was very good but they need some work on the menu. It was half price wine so that helped!
The is always excellent and the service is even better. It's refreshing to go to a neighborhood restaurant that is completely gluten-aware. Thanks for that guys!
The small plates and lamb were fantastic the pasta was poorly made too al dente too much garlic not enough salt.
The only thing I didn't like was the TV on and kind of loud in an otherwise quiet place. But loved the food and service
Brunch was great! Server was very attentive. Good for kids. Banana pancakes were great. Glad to have such a delicious vegan option.
Amazing brunch! The pancake battered cheese curds will change your life.
Had a table for eleven for brunch and it worked out perfectly. Food and service was excellent. Will definately return when in Madison again.
Went here for Mother’s Day. Excellent service and food.
The tin fox was very accommodating to my large group. We had to adjust the numbers several times. The food was delicious and the service prompt. I will go again.
Food was good, severs came by filled my wife's water, left the other 3 unfilled. Then came filled my coffee, left hers empty. Food was served to wrong table (all 4 dishes) then 2 taken back to kitchen. Then 2 from kitchen brought to our table, and remaining 2 taken from their table and given to us. Poor service decisions to say the least. Food worth returning for, but overall experience left something to be desired. Came for mother's day, no mention of"happy mother's day" or "are you celebrating mother's day today?" Seemed kind of detached.
Mostly meat and pork options so if you prefer seafood and fish this is NOT your place. Great beer selection on tap.
The plate sizes were great for sharing in a group and the food was delicious. The cocktails were a little expensive but very tasty.
Please, please put acoustic tile over the tin ceiling. You don't have to shout, but it's getting there. Otherwise, this is a really good restaurant, and worth the price.
Tin Fox has become one of my husband and mine favorite restaurants. The inside is warm, welcoming and very comfortable. The mini-lights in the windows really help in upgrade the atmosphere from a pub to a more romantic dinner establishment. The food is spectacular in preparation, attention to detail, presentation and of course taste. Very high end creation of farm to table items with the freshest of ingredients. The chef has the ability to combine ingredients that if taken alone one would never think of putting in the dishes he is creating, however, when the dishes are finished it's like magic as it all comes together and the little undertones of each ingredient work perfectly. We started with the pork belly small plate, the fig and apple salad, and for dinner we had the lamb chops and scallops entrees. All was enjoyed and sadly there was no room for one of their house made deserts. You get a fine dining experience in a very comfortable, casual setting that just works.
Scallops and steak were both outstanding. Great mdrinks/mixologist too.
Great selection of beer and cocktails, and a variety of food options for everyone’s tastes. We got the largest cheese board and really enjoyed it. Great service and a fun ambiance made it a great experience as well.
The service was outstanding, but the food was just mediocre. The best thing on the menu is the maple cheese curds! I'd go back for those, but the entrees leave a bit to be desired. The menu has great prices and the wine and beverages are pretty extensive.
First time here and it was a great place to enjoy our anniversary dinner. The food is amazing and have already recommended my friends try it. The pancake battered cheese curds were my favorite!
Maybe it was because it was Easter morning, but I was left feeling disappointed. First I have to say that the wait staff was excellent! The pancake battered cheese curds were delicious and that is where the good meal ends. It took over an hour for our food to arrive and when it came it was a huge disappointment. My two eggs over easy were hard and slightly burnt. The toast was dry and not even cut; just two slices of toast tossed onto the plate. The home fries were well-seasoned but too salty. I will try The Tin Fox again in the hope that the regular menu will be better prepared than the Easter brunch.
Food was less than spectacular
I would recommend Tin Fox with information about my experience with my recommendation. Two of us had salmon which was good once cooked additional time. Two people had ribs which were full of gristle and without much meat. The slaw that accompanied it was sort of unpalatable, although the potatoes were good. Our server was attentive. The service was relatively fast although when we asked for our salmon to be cooked longer it took long enough that the two with ribs were almost done eating by the time we were served again. This was not the servers fault, but the kitchens if anyone's. We had the dense chocolate cake for dessert which was good.
I'm not sure I will go back unless I know exactly what I'm ordering. The first time I was there was during restaurant week and the food was very good which is why I was interested in trying it again.
I liked the decor and the feel of the restaurant.
My salmon was good, could have used a few more different vegetables with it.
My husbands ribs were not great and he did not love the sauce.
Everything was presented very well.
Food was high quality, just not hot enough.
It was not crowded so the food should have been piping hot
Overall, the food and service was good. However, I did not feel that anything we had was worth the price that was charged.
Neighborhood place, would like to be able to recommend it more. But three tries (dinner), and I'm done with the food. A lot of beets and other cliche dishes and ingredients--brussels sprouts, burrata, cheese board etc.--done better elsewhere. Dull food.
The food was fabulous. Homemade pasta was divine and the octopus marvelous! Service was very slow,, though. They may have been short staffed. Will try it again!
Great GF options! Loved the cheese curds and the short rib.
The Fig Salad is enough reason to go to the Tin Fox. But so is the risotto. There are also plenty of items to choose from that are gluten-free. No need to fret Jac's closing, because Tin Fox has you covered if you have celiac including a separate fryer. The night I went (Tuesday) was quiet, service was excellent and food was terrific. They will be changing their menu for the spring season but luckily the fig salad will remain.
Thursday date night is a great deal. Highly recommend.
