A cosy 14th-century pub in the heart of Henley-on-Thames, where timeless charm meets exceptional hospitality.

Nestled in Henley’s historic market square, right next to the renowned butcher Gabriel Machin, we offer a seasonal menu shaped by premium cuts from the butcher’s counter and the finest locally sourced ingredients. Under the guidance of Head Chef Scott Smith, whose ethos centres on sustainability and supporting local producers, our menu is fresh, flavourful, and ever-changing with the seasons.

    It was sadly a rather disappointing experience. The front of house staff were disorganised and inexperienced. The cooking was poor, we sent a steak back as it was over cooked. It was pretty expensive for the quality. I hope they do better in the future when they have settled in

    We were very disappointed with our meal - both steak meals were served well done, after requesting them medium rare. The monk fish was burnt and the clam starter was delicious but very expensive considering we only received 10 clams! The serving staff were very apologetic and did everything possible to make our experience better.

    Great food. Great ingredients. Staff were lovely but did get asked by 4 different people if we had any allergies. Pudding menu a bit off I’d say. Refurbishment was sympathetic to the gorgeous old building. Really clean. The main restaurant still doesn’t have the same unique vibe as in the bar. Overall would highly recommend

    Barry and Nigel have got it so right. The menu is a perfect size, knowing the kitchen can cope and everything will be freshly made. The bavette steak, often disappointing in a lot of establishments was succulent and soft (which my friends had), accompanied by perfectly cooked fries and a lightly dressed rocket salad. My clams were completely delicious (they are one of my favourite seafoods so I can be easily disappointed), and the carrot and lemon salad so refreshing. Service was very attentive by a lovely girl, without being ‘in your face’ or saying things like ‘is everything alright’ numerous times. It wasn’t busy which was a blessing for us (love that little secret garden) but I hope for them it does become busy as it deserves to be.

    The ambiance is wonderful but for the second visit in a row the bavette steaks were really tough and inedible

    A very disappointing evening. We had to send both our meals back as the meat wasn’t cooked properly. We asked for a medium steak and it was rare. Likewise the lamb was very undercooked. On a positive note they did replace the whole meal with new items, but we still didn’t really enjoy the food. The lamb cutlets were swimming in grease and the steak was just ok.

    The staff are enthusiastic and at times too much so literally giving a menu and a few minutes later asking if you are ready to order. All staff should all be trained and in the loop with what they should do when a problem occurs. Things happen sometimes due to negligence and sometimes just bad luck but a unified approach should be had by all staff so customers are not bounced from serving staff, to managers and finally kitchen staff. Somebody has to own making a decision. We had gone hoping for a steak( we use the butchers weekly which was part of the reason for a visit) We were told that steaks were not available as it was a Sunday so we ordered a roast instead. I make a point of mentioning this as we later discovered the table behind had sent their steak back to the kitchen as it was not cooked to their liking so ordered another meal instead. So I am unsure why some diners were able to order Steak and some were not? Both roasts arrived the beef being with a yorkshire pudding but the pork was without one. The serving staff offered to put one on at no extra cost but why not put one on regardless? Both serving plates were stone cold as was my pork meat. I understand the benefits of letting meat rest but there is a point with a roast you want some warmth to it. My husbands was not hot but warm enough. I re ordered the same roast. You would want the kitchen staff to ensure the second plate was right but literally my husband had eaten two thirds of his dinner by the time mine came. My plate was hot and although missing one of the 2 veg it was meant to come with it was a better offering. I was told the meal would not be charged. We had cheese asked for the bill and charges for both meals had been included which I pointed out to staff. Then we have all sorts of excuses as to why they were now going to charge and yet again someone had to be found to make a decision. The concept is great but there is a whole lot of room for improvement.

    Tiny portions . Left there feeling hungry . Far too many staff in the back room who didn’t crack a smile between them . Could do with some proper potatoes to go with the fish courses.
