Something for everyone, vegetarian, gluten free vegetarian, vegan, and meat eater. Lots of choices, helpful staff. Had to wait a short while for reserved table but staff concerned and helpful about it. A bit noisy to have a conversation but food more than made up for it.
Beautiful woman for a date. Beautiful service from the waitress. Beautiful food. I can’t complain. Salmon was flawless. Paella was single-person perfect size and fresh. Rosé was recent and a good match. The truffle fries for starters and the roasted kale with lemon was also a flawless addition. We’ll be back. Soon. Highly recommended. Parking is a beast- but that’s not the establishment’s fault!
I grew up in Astoria, but until recently, haven't been back in years. My family and I stopped in for dinner this evening and were pleasantly surprised by The Thirsty Koala. As vegetarians, you never know what to expect, but the restaurant's veggie options were excellent! Ditmars has changed a lot over the years, but The Thirsty Koala is definitely a great addition to the neighborhood!
Amazing place. Great every time. Had my birthday here with friends.
The menu has many gluten free options, and the servers were very knowledgable and accommodating about food allergies and celiac, etc. The food was excellent!! Service was super attentive at first --dropped off a bit after we finished our meal, but overall really good. We'll go back.
The food here is always excellent which explains why the place is always packed! The wait staff is always super friendly and very attentive and personable. Great and interesting cocktail list and their specials are always to die for! Brought a friend tonight to expand his culinary horizons and he’s already talking about what he’s going to try the next time we eat here. Highly recommend!
Fantastic place. Great menu, home made bread for sandwiches, and VERY GLUTEN FRIENDLY.
Too noisy, but delicious and fun
We had a wonderful meal and good drinks. We had the lamb appetizer, then I had the pork belly and my counterpart had the flank steak. Both were delicious.
This place is a gem! If you enjoy great food and a nice relaxed atmosphere this is your spot! We ran in here at nearly 10PM, roughly 15 minutes before the kitchen closed, and the food was STILL on point!!! Anyone with a gluten sensitivity...this is your paradise Everything here is delicious!! Get to The Thirsty Koala you won’t be disappointed:)
The food was delicious and our server provided great service! I highly recommend!
This is always a fantastic experience! The food is fresh and flavorful; you can tell it is prepared by a staff that loves what they do and appreciate good food. The calamari was so light and not greasy! The dipping sauce was great with it. Wonderful and attentive service. Thank you to Caleb for being so helpful navigating food allergies; which by the way, is easy to do there. I drive an hour and a half to dine here and it is with the trip!
Tasty fun with eager staff and great attitude . Diverse menu, very Aussie
It's great to find a place with so many delicious, crispy gluten free options! Very friendly and accommodating staff.
Great little place! Went for brunch. It wasn't too crowded. Food was very good, nice portions, reasonable price. Very friendly staff. A few tables are under AC vents which drip, but we got our table changed quickly. It was a very humid day, and the same happened at another restaurant at dinner, so I assume it was unusual.
Service as always is a little slow but the gluten free food is totally worth it. Drinks were awesome! Fried chicken is the best. Would keep on coming back here again.
Service was very good. Food was bland and upset our stomachs.
This is a terrific vegetarian leaning (they do have good meat however) local restaurant with a lovely ambience, good food and a lovely owner Christine.
Felt like waitress was trying to rush us out the door even though there was a significant amount of open tables.
Super friendly place with tasty eats and great drink selection!
My sister and one of our mutual friends went here for brunch. The waitress was very nice. There wasn’t anything that stood out that I deemed amazing but overall it was a nice meal in a cute little spot. The street that this restaurant is on was very ideal too
Went for my birthday and have been here for another birthday as well.
As someone with allergies to gluten and dairy, I have to say that the staff is attentive and knowledgeable when it comes to accommodating those restrictions.
The food was delicious! Was such a treat to be able to enjoy calamari and fish & chips again. They can make almost any dessert gluten & dairy free also!
This my second time at the Thirsty Koala and we enjoyed it very much. They are extremely accommodating, helpful and friendly. Food is plentiful and delicious.
Every time we visit Astoria we will make a stop at the Thirsty Koala!
First: the service was attentive and friendly.
The menu isn’t that small but they don’t have enough variety. The price-performance ratio is not good.
We love Koala therefore we’ll give them another chance.
Awesome for celebrate special occasions. I had a nice Father’s Day brunch with my family. Recommended
Love this place! Everyone is so friendly & attentive to any requests regarding the food.
Wonderful experience overall. Fun to get out of the city.
A gorgeous spring evening on a Friday has the sidewalks filled with folks returning from work or spilling out from their neighborhood homes anxious to start their weekend. The Thirsty Koala is the perfect place for the “decompression process”, offering fantastic cocktails and other libations, Happy Hour, phenomenal cuisine, lively atmosphere, and sidewalk access.
The food was tasty. The waiters seemed annoyed but, my wife says it could have been the Sunday rush. Afterall, it was Mother's Day.
I enjoyed a great Mother’s Day brunch at Thirsty Koala. The restaurant is small and busy but they honored our reservation and we had a lovely time. The food was delicious- especially the waffles. They wouldn’t make any substitutions on the omelets. The servers were pleasant and accommodating. I would recommend the restaurant for good food and casual atmosphere.
This is a terrific local restaurant with very healthy, vegetarian oriented, delicious food. The owner Christine is a real doll. Reasonable prices as well. Wait staff is inexperienced but tries really hard and is super friendly.
The neighborhood is super cute and the restaurant itself is comfortably hipster-looking. We made a reservation ahead of time (recommended because the place is pretty busy for weekend brunch) and were seated immediately. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent - definitely try the Halloumi Fries and the Sheepherder's breakfast. Nice touch was the free refills of hot or iced coffee - we didn't order any alcohol but it was available. The biggest surprise was the cost - there were five of us there for brunch, no one held back in ordering what sounded good, we all ate until we were stuffed, and our check came out to just over $100 for everyone. We tipped 25% because the service and food were worth it. Can't recommend this place strongly enough!
Great food! Great service! Knowledgeable staff!
I have several food allergies/intolerances and I loved how every item on the menu was labeled accordingly, including dessert. They also had a great selection of gluten free beers, in addition to an extensive draft beer list.
Get the calamari and the fish and chips! They taste just like the real thing.
Biggest takeaway, no negative reactions to the food, and I plan to return soon.
We really enjoyed our dinner at the Thirsty Koala. The restaurant had a great vibe and the food was delicious! We were a little confused on who our server was since different people took our drink/food orders but the service was still great!
I’ve been to Australia and this is very authentic Australian! Such a nice atmosphere, great service and food!
My husband has celiac's disease so dining out is always hard for us. We love Thirsty Koala, almost everything on the menu is prepared gluten free and the food is really good. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There's also outside seating on the sidewalk and when the weather is nice the front doors are kept open. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, but specifically to anyone that has to be gluten-free.
Very accommodating for our stroller
It sounded like such an excellent option for a party that had gluten free and vegan needs. The noise level was unbelievable and the restaurant wasn't even full. My ears rang for quite awhile after leaving the restaurant. Lastly the "gluten free bun" that came with a sandwich was anything but and the gluten free member of our party spent the rest of the day having painful and distressing responses to the gluten.
Die Qualität des Essens war super. Etwas gestört hat uns lediglich die Lautstärke im Lokal. Auf unserem Hinweis, es sei extrem kalt, wurde sofort eingegangen und die Temperatur im Lokal angepasst.
Love this place! Great food, awesome ambiance. Fantastic spot for brunch.
