I was excited to try this place, as it's always popped up at the top of my Astoria restaurant searches. The cozy/modern atmosphere and fun cocktail list were the "highs" here for me. The definite "low" was the moussaka; the ingredients listed on the menu are all things I enjoy, but there was some kind of potent spice combination that I disliked so much I couldn't take more than one bite. Luckily our server was really accommodating - I ordered the calamari (pretty good, but nothing special) to supplement my entree, and she ended up taking the moussaka off of the bill, noting when people order they either love it or hate it - so beware :) I would recommend trying the restaurant as some of the menu items are funky and fun, but not sure I'd go back.
There are so many gluten-free options and a lot of awareness about celiac disease. They have a dedicated gluten-free fryer which is rate in NYC. Thank you!
Tasty and inventive dishes!
Very nice experience. Great food and service. Interesting dishes with Greek and Aussie flair. I would go back.
Food was fresh and excellent A bit noisy and hard to hear conversation
Service and food was excellent. Noise level was high and difficult to carry on a normal conversation.
Food took a long time. It was great though
I celebrated my daughter's birthday at this gluten-free restaurant. We had brunch and the food was very good and the service outstanding. They even served a birthday cake which we had bought for the occasion. We had been there before and we will continue to go there in the future.
I’ve been here twice and both times have not been impressed. People seem to love this place and I don’t get it. The first time I went there, there were full egg shells on my plate. Yes, egg shells! The staff were lovely and very apologetic and the chef even came out to apologize and my food was taken off of the bill. I decided to give it another shot and my husband found a hair mixed in with his food. The food itself tasted mediocre and we lost our appetites with the discovery of the hair. Won’t be giving this place any more chances.
Interesting and delicious food for every possible diet (vegan, gluten free etc...) plus the staff are super friendly. I made a mistake in my reservation AND had my baby with me and was nervous about having an issue, but it was no problem at all because the hostess was so professional and friendly and really went out of her way to accommodate us. Service is great but can be slow due to high demand and good quality food. Stuff you won’t find anywhere else. Worth the wait.
Went to The Thirsty Koala for birthday brunch and had a great experience! We were a group of 10, our table was ready and waiting when we arrived. The food was delicious, the Drinks were well made and the bottomless brunch option was a great deal! The service was friendly, well organized and attentive!
Gluten Free options are available for most items. The “Lot” Burger (Short Rib/Beef Blend) was awesome and the Margaritas were fantastic (all of them 😁)
Will definitely be back and recommend The Koala for brunch!
Third time back. The menu is so welcoming. Ambiance is warm and inviting.
Lovely dinner with good service and food. Many gluten free options which was important to us.
The food is excellent, but extremely slow service, they left part of our party’s food in the back for several minutes. The music is too loud to hear anyone speak.
The food took a very long time to be ready. I'm talking of almost 2 hours, which to me is unacceptable. The waiter didn't charge for the appetizers to make up for the tardiness but it's not nice to wait so long for the food.
Love this neighborhood spot. The food options are awesome. I have to eat gluten free and there are many items on the menu that I can eat. Best GF place in the city. And your non-GF friends will find plenty of options as well.
Great food and great service. A nice place to take friends for any occasion.
They really took care of us here at a birthday celebration for a seriously gluten-intolerant person. She was pleased to have choices and everything tasted excellent but also with novel flavors. It made us all want to go to Aust
We came here for a Friday friends get together as a friend lived nearby.
The food was moderate but service was good.
The setting is casual and I recommend booking if you have a larger group.
I loved the food here it was my second time coming. They have changed the menu but I like that because you can always find something to choose
There food is clean and healthy and I have friends who swear by GF so we love this place. I will be back soon
Great for special food requests like vegan and gluten free. The food is always fresh and delicious.
Very relaxed environment with fantastic Australian style burgers. Even if you don’t like burgers like myself, the quality of the meat is so worth the expense. Plus they have a great cocktail list.
The food was fantastic! Unfortunately, it took about 30 minutes to come while the restaurant was empty. The salmon was delicious, and so were the steak tacos, but skip the calamari.
This place is absolutely fantastic! The gluten free options are plentiful and delicious! The entire Staff is friendly and professional as well as extremely helpful. We ate here on a Tuesday and it was crowded but not packed. Can’t wait to go back. A must try :)
Service is slow but food is great.
Went for an anniversary lunch/Dinner. The service was amazing and so was the food. This is an awesome place hands down.
Great Food, great atmosphere, great food. Very well prepared for those who are looking for gluten free options. Highly recommend.
Waited over an hour and a half for our food. Did not receive anything complimentary or even a discount on our bill. The place was quiet and was not busy at all so there was no excuse for this.
Fantastic options if you are gluten free, practically the entire menu is safe! They even gave me gluten free bread at the table before dinner!
I really loved the food and service at this restaurant We had a salad and calamari for appetizers and some great cocktails to start off with and then I had fish of the day and my friend had chicken Marsala The food was really delicious great tasting and all I can say it had clean taste to it. We finished our meal with a gluten free dessert pudding with ice cream that honestly I would never had thought was gluten free We will be back again had great experience
Enjoy a late brunch here last weeked. Capable, warm and attentive service. Prices on par with the area. We left satiated and feeling very positive about the experience. Diverse menu. Will definitely return for dinner!
Awesome! This place is the best. The food is always perfect and the staff is incredible.
We had a fantastic time as always. The manager is so attentive and friendly, and our waitress was great.
We will definitely be back soon!
Amazing food and fun spot if you are exploring Astoria!
Amazing food and service! Our server Andrew made sure everything was perfect, as I need to eat gluten free (celiac disease). The choices were amazing and everything we order was so delicious. Will definitely come back to eat here when we are in NYC. Probably one of the best meals we’ve had out in a long time!
My celiac partner got ill after eating. Not sure how efficient/safe (i.e., cross-contamination) is their kitchen for gluten-free options.
Food I asked for chicken tacos and my husband for chicken massala, we waited for our food 45 minutes, and the food came cold, very disappointing. Tacos very tasteless!! I asked for coconut margarita after 20 minutes waiting for my drink they brought me a different drink which was horrible!!!
We showed up pretty late for our reservation but it was fine because they were not busy with it being late at night in a Monday. The servers were so nice and accomodating to our various allergies (gluten, dairy, and nuts collectively) and were able to get us a version of a menu item that usually is not dairy free. Fantastic place, can’t wait to go back.
The food was pretty good but I don’t know that it was worth the price.. I had the fish tacos, $18 for okay/ barely seasoned tacos is a bit much. The biggest issue I had with this place was the wait.. I can honestly say I’ve never experienced something that bad.
I totally get that busy nights happen and sometimes there are new people working; however, this was crazy. Waiting almost an hour for bread/ appetizers, having a server that clearly didn’t know the menu (told my friend that she didn’t know how big the meals were cause it was up to the Chef / really?), also forgetting to give us menus for a long time.. That was a bit much. The owner was really nice & tried to jump in a few times to help speed things along but I wasn’t interested in a 2+ hrs meal for tacos and an app.. They need to get it together because combining the wait with the okay food, the price and overall experience is absurd.
I will say that they comp’d our drinks because of the whole affair so that was really nice/ helped alleviate some of the annoyance - & the gluten free fries were AMAZING! But the server clearly couldn’t handle all the tables and it kind of dragged out our night unnecessarily.
We had really high hopes for this place so maybe I’d come back on a slower night to give it another shot, but I’m not sure cause the first experience was just a bit much.
Making this reservation was meaningless - waited 25 minutes after our reservation time with no apologies from staff whatsoever. Left to dine elsewhere.
