About The Tavern
Reservations are for the Formal Steakhouse Dining (upstairs), the Cocktail lounge is first-come, first-served.
From hanging glass beads to architectural artifacts and an original Brunswick bar painted in gold and turquoise, this is clearly not your father's steakhouse. The Tavern's menu features USDA prime beef, Australian Wagyu, organically raised Uruguayan beef, and organic free-range chicken, diver-caught Maine sea scallops, assorted fresh fish, cold water Rock Lobster Tails, and in season: oysters from both coasts, the Alaskan king salmon run, live Maryland soft shell crabs, morels, chanterelles, and porcini from hunters in Oregon and Washington, and fresh produce from local county farms. An award-winning wine list featuring over 1,200 selections, a great wine by the glass assortment, and an unusually well-stocked bar round out the Tavern's beverage program.

The Tavern Ratings and Reviews
We have dined here many times over the past 20 years and it has always been excellent. Cocktails, wine list, service, food, wine recommendations, only the best. We ordered the octopus, oysters, prime NY strip, Sirloin with mushrooms , spinach and asparagus. Could not have been better. Heather our server did a very good job. Thank you. Only one small misstep from the kitchen, they forgot the balsamic reduction with the asparagus.
We've been coming here for years and really enjoy it. Tavern is especially nice over the holidays as they decorate the room with pretty angels and lights. Service is excellent. Usually love their food, but this time our steak came out bleeding vs. medium as we requested, but the server apologized and comped our desserts. We still will return as that never happened before.
Of note, the only way to access the restaurant is up a big flight of stairs and has no elevator.
This place always does three things correctly, ALWAYS. The drinks, the food and the service. I had a fun meal with three docs over fifty and we all agreed we had never had anything we didn’t enjoy at the Tavern. That’s forty plus years at least of completely happy experiences. If you can find that somewhere else go there. Tavern has also helped me with business dinners and no one was ever disappointed then either. It’s not cheap, you get what you pay for. My most recent ocassion was a date and she was completely impressed, nuff said.
We believe The Tavern to be “ our Libertyville “
restaurant! However, this last visit was disappointing. Two of us ordered a pasta dish and asked for shrimp to top the pasta! We had too much pasta, not enough vegetables, and ONLY 4 SHRIMP which were very over-cooked! Not good! We didn’t ask how much extra the shrimp would be. But whatever it was, four over-cooked pasta was too expensive!!!!!
Skip the corporate and chain steakhouses and dine at Tavern. In contrast to the larger, familiar names in the steak world, Tavern does not train their servers to up-sell the customers through constant marketing. Rather, at Tavern we are always served professionally and attentively without being badgered to pad our bill. In addition the wine list is impressive, but unlike other steakhouses they are fairly priced. The decor is not the caricatured red leather seating often seen, but rather an eclectic setting conducive to conversation without shouting across the table. Finally, and most importantly, the steaks are fabulous. Go visit Tavern.
The Tavern is a great gem in Libertyville! The decor is eclectic and warm, the food is delicious and the cocktails are so good! My husband and I had date night here and loved every second of our experience! I would HIGHLY recommend the Tavern to all of my friends!
It's too expensive, even for libertyville, but it's good food. Downstairs is better than upstairs, more casual and still great food, but upstairs is great for a close by, 'high end' kind of date. For an American Bistro style restaurant like a date at a French restaraunt hit the Tavern's upstairs. For casual but nice fun hit the downstairs. The food is good no matter what.
Dinner with married grandson and his wife, perfect for this occasion since I am a bit hard of hearing and never had an issue with that, menu and mastery of prep ideal with four unique choices. Waitress excellent a little slow in the check, but all in all and excellent evening
I was disappointed. A member of our party was gluten free and the waitress was not very familiar with what items would work for her. When asked about some items, there seemed to be no flexibility. I ordered the duck, which was good but needed a little more fig sauce, maybe on the side. I expressed that I was not fond of wild rice, the side offered with it, and asked if I could just get some pureed potatoes instead and was told that was not possible. Butter was put on the table, but bread was never brought until they were removing the bread plates and the butter and I asked about receiving bread. The frisee salad had very little dressing on it and when I requested more, it took a good deal of time to receive and the restaurant wasn't that busy. The bartender downstairs was not very friendly and seemed irritated that I didn't like the wine sample he gave me of the Sancerre.
When I'm going to a restaurant of this caliber, I expect more from the service.
This is the only restaurant in Lake County that has this ambiance of the city, but with vintage detail. I never knew it existed, and I think it is very hard to find. It is hidden in downtown Libertyville, and the only entrance is in the back. The décor is so amazing, like you stepped into a movie set. From the light fixtures, to the ornate bar backdrop, to the vintage wood floors, the detailed ceiling, and the stunning stained glass, there is nothing that compares. The service is top notch, and they literally spoil you. This is the ultimate date night, anniversary, white cloth, get away. Most steak houses come with that $50 per plate price tag, and you feel taken advantage of when the check comes. This is truly one restaurant that makes you feel like you received a $50 per plate experience, and you feel like a celebrity when you leave. If you want to make an impression on your significant other, or an important client, you will not find a restaurant of this caliber in the northern suburbs. The Tavern should be nominated for a reality TV show, or travel segment. Truly a unique experience that everyone should try.
Consistency! The Tavern never disappoints! Our table was ready when we arrived, our server was attentive but not bothersome and our food was delish! We had giant sea scallops grilled to perfection, parmesean encrusted halibut, potato purée, sautéed mushrooms and tiramisu. Food was fresh, hot, flavorful and each dish had its own individual flavor. Vegetables were aldente and we were happy with everything! Will definitwly return soon!
There were issues with the steak temperature however the staff rectified the issues and adjusted the bill. All in all the food here has potential to be very good. I'll give them another try in the future but this evening 2/2 steaks were as rare as they could be and missed medium by far. But again the restaurant addressed the matter so we will be back and give them another try. Hoping for a better experience in the future.
