Been there several times for dinner because it is conveniently next to the concert hall. Each time we paid too much for a creative menu that was poorly executed and walked away disappointed. Service and location are nice, but we will be trying other restaurants in the future.

Had an incredible dinner at The Tavern at Heathman last night before a lecture at one of the nearby theaters. The host and the server were both friendly, helpful, and prompt. The food was outstanding; I had an appetizer, one of the specials for my main, plus a dessert with chamomile tea. The ambiance was quiet (although there were many other diners) which was just what I wanted. Visitors to Portland should definitely try it, but so should folks who live nearby. It is a great restaurant for a great meal.

The menu is limited and could use revising. Many of us are going to the symphony or to a program at the Winningstad Theater and we'd appreciate a larger selection of small plates.

The food tasted very good, but my serving of steak was rather skimpy -- just a few small slices. Loved the parm fries, and the salad with grapes was fantastic. As for the dining room, improvements are needed. People shouldn't be crowded near the bar, which is also near the entrance. It makes it hard for the servers to get back & forth and for patrons to get to their tables, etc. Instead, tell people who want drinks that they can go sit in the library and will be served in there! Also, it took forever for me to get my Whiskey Old Fashioned, and the timing of the salad serving was off. However, our waiter was very nice & very fair, comping me my cocktail and the salad because of the delay. I think with some tweaks this could be a fine place!

Made a reservation on Open Table a couple of weeks before the arrival date. When we arrived the menu was price fix and not what was on the their website site when I made the reservation. There was no notice of that during the reservation process. We had tickets for the symphony and it was Valentine’s Day and to,late to go restaurant hunting so we stayed. The wait staff was very good but unfortunately the negative reviews we saw were accurate as to the food. If the food met the price of the meal I wouldn’t complain but I agree with my wife who said the best part of the meal was the ice cream. It’s too bad I had really like this restaurant years before but now I just wish them well.

I love the Tavern at the Heathman, but last night it was “chaos” as our waiter noted when 40 minutes after we were seated no food had arrived. I guess he finally noticed and asked he could bring more wine. We didn’t need more wine. We asked for some bread to tide us over and he brought that, so we survived waiting another 15 minutes for our dinners. I had purposely made the reservation a little earlier than I would have so that we could arrive at the concert at a comfortable time. In the end we did just that, our waiter heard us when we voiced our concern at the tardy arrival of our dinners. So whew, we will go back.

The service was wonderful starting with the front desk and including every server, always willing to serve in a friendly, accommodating, professional manner. The food did not meet my exectations. Salmon was tasteless, meatballs underdone. Stingy on the sauces which might have made the meat dishes taste better? The location is so perfect, in the wonderful Heathman and next to the Schnitzer. I will give it another try for the positive reasons above and hope the food is better.

Overall I felt they were still getting there act together… coursing and service pace was of. Over food quality was good - the taste balance was off to me, my meat had to much rosemary and it overwhelmed the au poive and the steak. I would give it another try.

So happy to have The Tavern! It’s become my go-to spot for post work happy hours or pre-theatre dinner and drinks. The growing menu is delicious. I recommend the pappardelle pasta wiry short ribs and the salmon tartine. Don’t sleep on the desserts either!

We really enjoyed our Afternoon Tea at The Tavern at Heathman. The service was exceptional & the food was all wonderful. We enjoyed the variety. Choosing to go in January, we missed the holiday decorations, but appreciated less crowds & more time to have a relaxing afternoon. We hope this event will be extended into January again next year. We look forward to going again!

The food menu was very limited and expensive The root vegetable pie was very salty (2 of us ordered it and left over half). They comp'd us for both dishes which we appreciated. The one item we ordered that was very good was bread and butter. We will not go here again... and hope that the Heathman will improve the menu and the chef. We used to love going to the Heathman for dinner and hope the new management can make it the special place it once was.

Dining at the Heathman used to be an amzingly good and dependable meal. There have been many iterations but the Tavern, the newest restaurant operated within the hotel has a relatively paired down menu and wine and drinks menu. There were three vegetarian dishes offered on the entire menu and we tried each. The flavors and textures were good except for something like a charred wild rice that would shatter teeth amd had to be avoided. The second issue is that with only three vegetarian items they reused ingredients so that one dish had similarities to another, and were not three unique dishes. Two dishes shared the hard as nails black rice, two dishes shared a vegetable puree as a base and two of the dishes depended heavily on delicata squash. That said as a whole they were imaginative and tasted good. One dish was a stuffed delicata squash, one a salad and another a roasted cauliflower. Sadly we ended up deciding to take the plates to go upstairs to our room since the restaurant was bone chilling, feet numbing cold. Every patron was eating in full winter gear and our waitress said she was happy management okayed staff to wear extra clothing over their uniforms. In fact the whole hotel was cold. Lobby was cold, and hallways were cold. This once high end hotel has fallen quite a bit. Almost no staff in some part due to icy weather, but also due to under scheduling. The doorman told me he was the only one put on for the day and he struggled to get cars vaket parked and could not help with luggage but offered to find a luggage trolly that wasnt broken and showed me how to work the ailing luggage elevator. All in all the Tavern restaurant can only be as good as the Heathman allows since it is operated in the Heathman. Maybe we will try again in the spring.

Although the atmosphere and service were excellent and the quiche was delicious, the salad was made of completely disgusting greens—old, spoiled, inedible! Someone really paid no attention to what s(he) was putting on the plate. I was extremely disappointed in the lack of quality greens!

Our expectations for a wonderful High Tea were not met. We were very disappointed in the food. Only one item (Russian tea cakes) met our standards. We have been to similar teas in NYC, London & Victoria, B.C. and the Heathman just didn’t make the grade. We would not return.

Went for a NYE special, $120/plate plus $35 for drink pairing. Food was not what was promised on Open Table menu. Food was ok, not spectacular. Filet minion was good. Drink pairings were a joke- A glass of Prosecco and the worst old fashioned I’ve tasted. Dessert tasted frozen and old. Overall, if they charged half the price for this meal, my rating would be way better. It was NOT worth what they charged.

Booked nearly a month in advance. Were stuck upstairs in what seemed to be a business lounge of some sort lined up on a sofa, not even facing each other. Sofa sank down so much table was just below my collarbone. We had dirty silverware and our server was pleasant but did not have much experience and couldn't really answer any questions. A horrible experience for the money and what we thought would be a special experience at a Portland institution.

We have over the years enjoyed Christmas Tea at the Heathman many times, this year was sadly a huge disappointment, the remodel of the tea room is awful, the goodwill quality books lining the walls just look tacky, to say the Christmas decorations were minimal is being kind, they did not create a holiday atmosphere The focus is on fitting as many tiny tables as possible in a room that was once beautiful, very sad/ will most likely be my last “Christmas” tea at the Heathman

The meal was wonderful, with seasonal delights. Our waitperson was personable and sincerely enthused and knowledgeable. The ambiance is what I call American Bistro. So happy this place is in our hood.

Although one expects small tea, sandwiches and nibbles during high tea, the quantity of food was ridiculously small for the price! There was no clotted cream, no lemon curd, the scone was half the size of a normal scone. The macaron was literally the size of a nickel! That said, the tea sandwiches were tasty and very good. But the Dungeness crab deviled egg had the smallest piece of crab you could possibly imagine.

We have been to the Heathman a half dozen times through the years. This is our first time since post COVID. The ambience is always special. The prices that they are, we expected more in service and food. Our server did not bring the jam and cream that comes with scones. When we mentioned it, she brought some (although we already ate the scones). Never apologized or offered anything else. Overall, we were disappointed.

Came here with on a Tuesday original reservation for 7 people in the restaurant. We were going to have 1 minor with us so I reserved the restaurant side via OpenTable. Two people got sick so I changed the reservation to 5. Lastly, another person cancelled (the minor) so it was now a party of 4. Staff was welcoming and understanding. We asked if we could just sit in the lounge instead of the restaurant side since the minor wasn't with us now, and that was easily accommodated. Place wasn't busy and it looked relaxing, bright and clean. Waiter was new to the tavern, so he wasn't exactly sure about the menu description of the whiskey sour when we asked about it. After getting our water we waited 10 minutes to get our drink order. A few minutes later we put in a food order of cauliflower, chips and dip, Bread and meatballs for us to all share. The drinks took a solid 20 minutes. And after waiting, we were told the whiskey sour in question from their menu couldn't be made because they were out of the ingredients. 1 beer, 1 lemon drop that came with no sugar on the rim, and yet another drink they couldn't make correctly because they were out of the ingredients, and instead of taking a new drink order, just substituted the mixer in that cocktail. We all enjoyed the food, and we were all done within 70 minutes. I'd go there again for the food, but not for drinks. $150 (without tip) for 8 drinks and 4 tapas sized orders. Not horrible because the food was pretty good. Server was polite, but a little aloof, and never bothered to clear dishes from our table.

We paid for the Christmas dinner experience and it was not good. We where seated and it took the wait staff 20 minutes to come and take are drink order. Most of the evening we had to flag down the wait staff and it took up 1.5 hours to get through dinner . No one took the time to explain how it works that we received all the food on the menu and it was confusing. they also took about 25 minutes to bring us any food. When the main course came it was cold. the dessert was burnt and inedible . Overall the dinner had a lot to be desired and we paid over 100 each.

The salmon hash was most excellent. Though it may have been trout or steelhead instead of salmon, which was fine with us. They appear to still be remodelling which made it feel a bit 1940's war torn movie set. Service was very good--prompt with a not-forced friendliness. This was a Christmas breakfast so we had low holiday expections, however we were totally pleased and will return for more of the hash.

Absolutely the worst meal experience ever. One waiter ( who was trying his best ) and was the hostess and bus person as well. We were there for brunch @ 1030 on Christmas. No Christmas decorations or anything..no Christmas music. Very bleak and bare. The food was not good and stone cold, as was the coffee. I could not believe it. Good thing my family (three of us) have a good sense of humor, it was so bad it we just made jokes about it. I give it no stars.

Granted it was Christmas morning….food was terrible. Won’t be coming back. The hardest meal to not do well. Every aspect of the meal was bad. I don’t blame the waiter who provided pretty poor service as he was on his own. The kitchen should have known better. Very disappointing to see this is what the Heathman dining has become.
