The Sur House Ratings and Reviews
Outstanding views from both the terrace and dining room. Located at the Ventana Inn & Resort, our evening was special from beginning to end.
The service was impeccable, and the ambience was lovely. I had the NY strip, my husband had the pork chop, both cooked to perfection. Extensive wine list, staff can assist with perfect pairing. You will not be disappointed, and we plan to return.
This place is just AMAZING! We went there as we were driving down from Monterey to LA. Normally a restaurant that has a amazing views is not always the one that you are going to have amazing food, but Sur house breaks the rule by giving you amazing tasty and incredible food, with unique and amazing service, and on top of all of that the Panoramic View of the place is amazing. For me this is the kind of place that I will for sure come back.
Lunch was very good, hearty general fare. Dinner was not . The food preparation was very beautiful but lacked substance. Anyone can cut a head of lettuce in half and add some dressing. The egg in a hole? Was a little piece of toast with a quail egg on a large plate. Very boring. The New York steak filled with fat and grizzle. How can you make a poached pear tasteless ?
Ventana has just finished an extensive remodel. WOW! There outdoor seating area is better than ever! The bar is awesome! The views are the same (incredible) but seem even better with the new design elements. We can't wait to go back...not only for the ambiance but for the delicious, creative food, the superb service and the wonderful feeling just being there. Great job Ventana!
Food was quite delightful and the ambiance was excellent. The views would likely be very nice on a clear day or a summer night, but it was mostly dark when we were there. But, the fires were very nice outside.
I think the price was a bit high (esp the drinks) , likely because it's located in Big Sur.
The parsnip soup seemed vegetarian, but apparently it has chicken stock in it (should probably be more obvious in the menu)
Quick lunch on a rainy January Wednesday.
Waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful
we split the oyster lettuce wraps - delicious - crispy, warm oyster amid the cool lettuce.
we also split the cioppino (based on recommendation from waitress) - a perfect dish for a cold wet day - more broth based than tomato based - excellent dish.
The Sur House is a MUST! We had the loveliest lunch there yesterday. The setting and views cannot be beat. Beautiful outdoor patio for lounging, cocktails and dining. The food is local, original and delicious and the service is professional and attentive. If you are not staying at Ventana the restaurant is really a destination and worth the drive from Carmel/Monterey. The deviled eggs and the shrimp roll were outstanding and my husband said the hamburger is the best he ever had. It was a spectacular day but even if the weather is not cooperative, the dining room is warm and inviting.
Fabulous view. Great ambiance with good but unfussy service. Food OK. Burger was fabulous. Saw condors winging around the hillside when dining. Price commiserate with location and service. We spent 2.5 hr there at lunch with a clear view with vast enjoyment of the company and surrounding.
We always enjoy visiting the Sur House. The view is amazing and the food is generally very good. On this visit the service was not great. We had to work hard to get the servers attention every time we needed anything. They were devoting all their attention to a bigger table near us. We will go back because we love the ambiance and the view but we were not impressed by the service this time.
we Have visited Sur House twice now in Dec 2017. With a large seafood menu, I found I had less choice as we did not eat seafood. However what we had - chicken sandwich, falafel wrap, roasted Brussels sprouts, and butternut squash soup were all delicious. I would like to see some pasta dishes added. I liked the hint of spices used in all the dishes.
Absolutely beautiful and delicious lunch on Christmas Eve. We sat outside with a heater keeping us cozy and the gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean in front of us. The manager, Thomas, was wonderful and made us feel so special. Our waiter, Hector, was perfect also. Excellent service, view and food!
Here for a birthday lunch on a calm, brilliant December day, Sur House was a perfect choice. As many times as we've driven down the Big Sur coast, eating at various restaurants, I've never seen it as serenely beautiful as we viewed it from our table on the Sur House deck. Our meal was excellent, though not outstanding: light and delicious and original, attractively and creatively presented; the menu was small but balanced. Our waiters and waitresses were all exceptionally friendly and thoughtful, and they added to our enjoyment. We will definitely be back.
Did the tasting menu and it was amazing. The salmon was glazed to perfection and the ribeye was cooked just right. With every course, our waiter came out to explain exactly what and where the good came from. There was not a bad thing on that menu. Not to mention, anyone who can make celery and beef tongue has to be a very good chef.
Make sure you're hungry and don't fill up on bread either, it was a largest mistake but they nicely packed our desserts for us to take back with us.
Amazing location coupled with a very creative menu (Chef's Tasting Menu). Waiter Jose was perfect there when we needed him disappeared when we didn't. It is rare in California to have a 2.5 hour dinner without feeling rushed. This was never the case for us.
Expensive but well worth the price!
We love this restaurant. The view is amazing and so is the food. We drive down from Monterey on occasion for the experience. We were very sad while it was closed. They did a great job renovating and the food is just as good as it was before. We will definitely be back.
So good to have the Ventana Inn open again and with it, the restaurant -- now known as Sur House. We launched there three weeks after reopening on a beautiful fall day. Setting is glorious. I had the shrimp roll, which was outstanding.my husband had the chicken sandwich which was surprisingly bland given the description. Service was friendly but very slow. Lunch menu was limited with no specials. After we ordered, food took a long time to come and tho they were quick with a desert menu, server took so long to return for our order that we decided to forgo (just as well!)
A very inviting creative menu from first course, exceptional tomato bisque, baby carrots through an amazing lemon tart topping off the evening. Between a first ever Egg in the hole beautifully collaborated with roasted artichoke and garlic cloves. Our main courses included a perfect medium rare ribeye and memorable very juicy chop. Sort of NYC, Chicago, New Orleans fusion meets and embraces the organic tradition of the Central Left Coast - it doesn’t get better than this!
Over the years this restaurant has been up and down. It's now WAY up. They have significantly remodeled and enhanced the outdoor experience and the food is terrific. Interesting and well prepared food with good options. The view is simply breathtaking. Well worth the drive from Carmel area or the south (once Hwy 1 is open).
Amazing dining experience at Big Sur! I had the 4 course tasting menu and every dish was delightful and creative. I couldn't believe the flavors that came out of each dish. I started with the Tuna Crudo, the tuna was so fresh! My halibut was accompanied by a clam chowder with fresh clams! The s'mores dessert was delicious!
I highly recommend the tasting menu, it will allow you to see how creative and well thought out the menu is.
Our server was excellent, he has worked at the restaurant for 16 years!
I can't wait to go back!
