One of my favorite places to visit when down in the area. Awesome views when clear and excellent food and service.
Amazing view, with great staff, and great food
Amazing experience. Great food and service.
Great views delicious food!! Do it, eat there!
Really exceptional service. Great food with nice portions (not too much). Great wine list too at reasonable prices. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.
View was magical! food was overpriced and not good..drinks were just o.k.
Spent 2 days "glamping" at Ventana so had to try dinner here. My Birdman cocktail was delicious and apropos since we had just spent a delightful 3 hours with the local falconer and some of his birds. Wine selection was good but not many local selections. Food was ridiculously overpriced and way too fussy -- more of a "food as art" experience than delicious fine dining. Some was delicious -- particularly my tiny serving of short ribs -- but after fabulous meals at Post Ranch and Big Sur Bakery -- we were underwhelmed. Also couldn't enjoy a view, even at sunset in warm weather, because the only outdoor area was off limits due to a wedding reception booked there. So overall, meh.
Great lunch menu. Amazing location. Fantastic service.
Excellent food and exceptional service in a upscale cozy cabin atmosphere
Paco was the laziest waiter. He tooled around the restaurant trying to look busy while avoiding giving his tables any actual service. He appeared to struggle to complete a sentence when speaking to us. Worst service I've had in years. If you go to Sur House, avoid Paco.
We have eaten here twice since we are staying on property and there is not much choice. The food is uneven. The seasonal chicory salad was good as was the salmon. The pork was way over-salted and strangely seasoned. And the pear parsnip soup was brown glop. And how about just giving us butter or olive oil for the bread instead of weird pink pickles. This place is trying too hard to be different without much success. The service can best be described as “server-first.” They will not hesitate to interrupt your conversation if they want to talk to you or yank away a plate.
Beautiful outdoor seating with panoramic views of the Big Sur Coast. Limited lunch menu but the dishes were creative and delicious.
Lovely restaurant. Food is exceptional. Great place for a date or a relaxing drink with friends. Superb wait staff. Views are incredible. Try the abalone appetizer - it is wonderful! We shared the salmon and steak entrees. The started salad was equally good. It is a place that you can get dressed up for, or come in casual clothes. Everyone is welcome!
Cuisine is quintessential California made with fresh, local ingredients. Dining while overlooking the Big Sur coastline, well, it doesn’t get much better! The cioppino tasted of the sea and all fish was fresh and delicious. The swordfish entree was also excellent and served with a corn and soba noodle pho broth. So worth the drive from Carmel.
Great server, fabulous food & nice people
Incredible locally sourced ingredients beautifully prepared in a magnificent setting. Can't say enough about this venue
We went there at noon. Have a good oceanic view with sunny day from the restaurant. Food is pretty delicious.
Pro: can’t beat this view for sunset. Great cocktails too!
Cons: terrible service and mediocre food for the price. Waited over 10 min and no one came to our table so we talked to the hostess who sent someone over 5 min later. That is unacceptable for a restaurant at a 5 star hotel.
The food left much to be desired. The desserts were especially weak and frankly embarrassing for the chef. Worst Apple tartine with a crust that came straight out of the freezer section or Costco. The chocolate mousse tasted old and could easily have been from the frozen section of Costco as well.
They did not ask how I wanted the duck cooked. It came out very well done. The pieces were not tender.
Overall do not recommend for dinner but def a good spot to get drinks and watch the sunset. The PCB cocktail was excellent.
We were super excited to sit outside with a beautiful view of the coast. Unfortunately, we were told they would not be having dinner service outside which was the only reason I made the reservation. They should tell you when making the reservation if there will be no outdoor seating. They also say pet friendly, which is true. However, if They do not allow you to sit outside, there is a designated “dog friendly table” that is right in the aisle way. Food was good. The jalapeño grits were amazing!
This is the place to go for a lovely and relaxing lunch while visiting Big Sur. The food and view is amazing. The new outside bar provides an additional option to table dining. Food is fresh and creative. A special treat!
Had the most wonderful relaxing lunch on a road trip on our way up to Carmel. Perfect stop over! Lovely staff - beautiful food and wine! Fabulous view .....
We got to The Sur House an hour and a half before our reservation and took advantage of the (pricey but typical for Big Sur) cocktails and sat outside by the fire. Even with the fog obstructing all views, it was a romantic setting to start our evening. The dinner was good -- and our waiter was lovely and made our evening for sure -- but I would not qualify it as being worth the price that comes with the pre fixe menu. For the more adventurous eaters, perhaps - but for my palate, I would say the cost far outweighed the food and the ambience combined.
Great food. Beautiful spot. Precise service, if a bit sterile. Would definitely come back.
We stayed at Ventana for 5 glorious nights and had dinner at Sur House every evening. The service was wonderful. On our first night, Tom took the time to take some wonderful photos of me and my husband out on the patio. He then delayed dinner since we were having such a wonderful time sitting at the outside fireplace. He even brought us blankets. All our dinners were delicious. We also did the "Sip like a Sommelier" event one evening. What a special treat! Paco and Alvin were absolutely terrific, pairing 5 courses with delicious wine and food. So, we fell in love with Ventana and Sur House and we can't wait to go back.
Work on steps of service especially since you are suppose to be a gem in the area. Server attentive level almost none existent had to ask busser/food runner for items and to get the server.
Bar service was absolutely terrible, but our server was excellent and made up for it.
Ventana has always been a special spot for me. You are sitting above the trees and looking out to sea yet protected from wind. For of us were there for lunch with a limited menu but everything was delicious and the service was outstanding. We mentioned that it was my husband's birthday and they wrote Happy Birthday in chocolate on his dessert plate. This is a place for romantic couples, quiet adult parties and anyone who wants a peaceful scenic and delicious meal in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Cozy indoor seating is also available. My only complaint: Sur House is a new silly name. Locals have and always will continue to call it simply "Ventana."
We celebrated for our anniversary
This was an amazing find when visiting the area on vacation from the UK. The location is stunning and the food and service excellent. We will be back again for sure
Evening started out wrong, but ended up pretty perfect. The waiter was charming, informed, and attentive. There is a tasting menu, but you can choose “a la carte.” The chef dishes were creative and, for the most part, amazingly tasty. There was so much attention to details. The heirloom salad was sweet and had just the amount of seasoning, garnish, and vinaigrette. See photo. The Second was lobster and crab with polenta. This dish was just amazing and should not be missed. The alaskan halibut was fresh and served with a kimchi broth with greens. I felt some of the mixed greens conflicted, but overall an amazing dish. The deserts were creative. The negative was the hostess sitting, a problem noted on yelp. Maybe,we were have been better treated if we said we were staying at the resort.
We had a wonderful and unique dinner at The Sur House. It’s a set price for 4 courses (including dessert) which are just the right portions. You pick from 4 or five options for each course and although they aren’t huge, by the time we finished dessert we were quite full. The presentation is fabulous and every course was unique but very tasty. The service was very attentive (Paco was our server) and the whole evening was relaxing and special.
Found the portions small, service really slow and prices high. Can't beat the view though!
Excellent food and service. A little pricey but worth it if you want a great dining experience.
Bartendress seemed perturbed.....only 2 patrons seated at bar eating a meal...We had to wait over 15 minutes to order simple drinks (vodka/soda and margarita/rocks). We were then seated in what appears to be an 'addition'....ambience divorced from the balance of restaurant. Room was very noisy and had a 'cafeteria' feel. Garden sculpture covered in cobwebs....yet nicely lighted. Appeared to be a significant lack of attention to 'detail'.
Great place in beautiful Big Sur. Food was very fresh and flavorful. Great service but the view and environment steal the show. We would have liked to see more vegan options.
We had a lovely evening. The food was good, but not extraordinary. Both salads we chose (pasta salad and gem lettuce) were good but high-priced for relatively simple fare. The three stars of our experience were the cavatelli (which I had as my main entree), the egg-in-a-hole, and the parfait for dessert. Our waiter was perfect- attentive but subtle in his appearances...
We took a motorcycle ride out to Ventana to have a nice lunch and enjoy the views. It is always a special destination point for a ride. The menu, however, seems much more limited than my last visits. It's still a great place to visit.
Fantastic setting, great food, the service was a bit loose but we loved the experience overall
It was our anniversary and the staff was wonderfully attentive and helpful. The food was fresh and fabulous. This is a beautiful spot to which we will definitely return.
