Always consistently good
Absolutely outstanding in every way...beautiful restaurant, excellent food and service
Everything was perfect, and to think I even debated getting dessert!
Very much enjoyed our birthday celebration dinner. Food and service was excellent.
Great food. It would have been nice to know what the items cost.
The view is everything for this place. Food is decent, and drinks are great. However, service could use some work. Servers were slow to respond, and drinks were made incorrectly. A gin and tonic arrived as a gin and soda; when the bartenders were notified, their response was that the tonic water dispenser was broken...but they still had bottled tonic water that they didn't think to substitute. But at least the view was amazing.
Food was good, but service was POOR. Food took 45 minutes to arrive when other people who came later got their food first without anyone coming over to explain why. Also, asked for the waiter twice and they never came by. Water glasses were never filled until asked for. Ordered a bottle of white wine and there was no ice bucket given. On top of the bad service, there was a 22% mandatory tip. I tip well when it's warranted, not just mandatory.
Our food was cold both times we dined there. It seemed that the food was pre made and warmed up.
Gorgeous views, lovely atmosphere and really tasty food. They treated us very well. We were delighted!
Perfect service. Food was excellent. No views from within the restaurant but lovely terrace with heaters in the winter. A bit expensive but you can’t go very wrong here.
Off season, midweek. Nice and quiet. Our waiter, Leonel, was wonderful.
After I left I got very I'll and was admitted to ER, you should verify cross contamination
Visiting Carmel for the weekend from Los Angeles, and Sur House was our best meal by far during our entire stay. Loved the food, view and top notch service. We were allow to sit outside since to terrace was closed but we got a lovely table with a view inside.
The food was good, but not outstanding. Service made up for that some as it was superb!
Menu for lunch is small and on top of that they were out of a couple things which we were not informed of up front. Other than that food was excellent and of course location is spectacular.
Fabulous view from the terrace and parts of the dining room. Lunch is very reasonably priced and the food was light, elegant, and delicious! Highly recommend for a perfect quick stop off PCH / Hwy 1
We had high expectations, but the food was a cold and there wasn’t as much ambiance.
Have eaten here several times since the reopened. The first time was great. This time the food was mediocre. My daughter ordered the Opah fish whIch was seriously undercooked (we are all fine with pan seared but this was raw). It was bland, no seasoning. My steak was nothing special. The duck was overcooked and flavorless. The green goddess dressing on the salad was not green goddess at all - lacking the chives and greens flavors...and it was drenched. Desserts weren’t bad. Our waiter was good but they kept taking away plates before everyone at the table was done - bad manners and made us feel rushed. The place was empty at 7 pm on Xmas eve. Really disappointing the restaurant has gone so downhill after all the improvements and new chef. My daughter had a very bad experience recently also when a huge noisy wedding was on the patio and she wasn’t forewarned. So much for her romantic quiet dinner - ruined.
Hoping they do better. We live there part time and not many options for a nice dinner.
Used to be good. Oh well.
Made reservations on open tabble but restaurant was closed :( Long drive for nothing and every where lese booked
Amazing food, excellent view and laid back vibe.
For Thanksgiving Dinner I chose “Roasted Turkey” and was very disappointed. The turkey had no taste, looked as if it had been cooked in a pressure cooker and was cut in huge thick lumps instead of properly carved. It was also so tough that I couldn’t cut it.
I informed the waiter but no-one talked to me about it.
The meal was very expensive for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner ($95 before tax and gratuity). especially because I couldn’t eat most of it.
Probably will not eat at The Sur House again and certainly will not recommend it.
Thanksgiving at the Sur House was a magnificent treat. While turkey was on the menu, other fabulously creative options attracted our party and they were scrumptious -especially the cioppino, potato crusted ling cod with fennel and butternut squash risotto. Dining al fresco with absolutely stunning views of the ocean and mountains made this Thanksgiving perhaps the most memorable of my life.
Simply superb! Outside seating with a view which was unexpected but very worthwhile!
Beautiful venue. Food ok, overpriced. Pretty much paying for the view!’
We had dinner and breakfast. The ingredients were top notch (the duck and crab quality was excellent) and there was a large selection for every course and meal. Our only complaint was the pricing.
At dinner the menu only offered four courses for $95 - much more food than we ever eat. Fortunately, we had read an Open Table review revealing that the many offerings for each course were also available ala carte. Unfortunately, all of the appetizers were $22 and all of the salads/soups (including a simple green salad) were $20, without regard to the type of ingredients or difficulty in preparation. Mains ranged from $34 for fishto $54 for steak, even though the preparation was well executed by fairly ordinary for this level of restaurant.
Breakfast inclusion in our room rate gave is what initially seemed like a generous $90 credit. Unfortunately, our breakfast of two mimosas, an ordinary eggs+bacon+home fries plate, a tasty crab benedict+bacon, and a coffee and capuccino was $124.
The dining room is your typical large and fairly noisy "nice golf club type" facility, which seems more suitable for families than a romantic night out. Breakfast is served in the outdoor seating area, which is approx 4 miles from the ocean, on a windy hilltop. It has a view looking over the top of an grotesquely trimmed 20ft high fir hedge that obscures all of the land between the restaurant and the coast. The outdoor seating area behind that part of the restaurant is nice, but has no view.
One of my favorite places to visit when down in the area. Awesome views when clear and excellent food and service.
Amazing view, with great staff, and great food
Amazing experience. Great food and service.
Great views delicious food!! Do it, eat there!
Really exceptional service. Great food with nice portions (not too much). Great wine list too at reasonable prices. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.
View was magical! food was overpriced and not good..drinks were just o.k.
Spent 2 days "glamping" at Ventana so had to try dinner here. My Birdman cocktail was delicious and apropos since we had just spent a delightful 3 hours with the local falconer and some of his birds. Wine selection was good but not many local selections. Food was ridiculously overpriced and way too fussy -- more of a "food as art" experience than delicious fine dining. Some was delicious -- particularly my tiny serving of short ribs -- but after fabulous meals at Post Ranch and Big Sur Bakery -- we were underwhelmed. Also couldn't enjoy a view, even at sunset in warm weather, because the only outdoor area was off limits due to a wedding reception booked there. So overall, meh.
Great lunch menu. Amazing location. Fantastic service.
Excellent food and exceptional service in a upscale cozy cabin atmosphere
Paco was the laziest waiter. He tooled around the restaurant trying to look busy while avoiding giving his tables any actual service. He appeared to struggle to complete a sentence when speaking to us. Worst service I've had in years. If you go to Sur House, avoid Paco.
We have eaten here twice since we are staying on property and there is not much choice. The food is uneven. The seasonal chicory salad was good as was the salmon. The pork was way over-salted and strangely seasoned. And the pear parsnip soup was brown glop. And how about just giving us butter or olive oil for the bread instead of weird pink pickles. This place is trying too hard to be different without much success. The service can best be described as “server-first.” They will not hesitate to interrupt your conversation if they want to talk to you or yank away a plate.
Beautiful outdoor seating with panoramic views of the Big Sur Coast. Limited lunch menu but the dishes were creative and delicious.
