The Sunset Ratings and Reviews
Beautiful ambiance. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 in the food category is because the Risotto needed to be cooked longer. It was still watery. I was with my family and did not was to upset the flow of the dinner, so I did not send it back as I should have , so I did eat some, but did not enjoy. If they cannot prepare a risotto correctly, I would advise to remove from menu. Thank you:))
The Sunset is the perfect place for a healthy dinner that sits right across from Zuma Beach. My wife and I spent 15 minutes at the beach before dinner and went for a sunset walk by the water right after. We enjoyed the Lobster Roll w/fries and Lobster Linguine for dinner. Both dishes had fresh lobster that tasted wonderful. The service was good and attentive. The location was outstanding. This is a great casual spot (that's a bit pricey) to take friends who want to dine near the water.
The Sunset is one my favorite places to eat when I want to relax at ocean, but I was a little disappointed with the cuisine. The dishes could use a bit more seasoning. Although our server was good overall he wasn't as attentive as I had come to expect from previous visits. It's a great place to share a meal and a sunset.
We went to The Sunset for the first time to celebrate my birthday. It is located right on the ocean and we were able to take a very nice walk on the beach before going to the restaurant. My son does not eat seafood and the available options were a bit limited. I ordered the shrimp/mushroom risotto which was very good. His spaghetti was okay but nothing special for $22. Overall we had a good time and I look forward to coming back for brunch sometime soon.
First time at The Sunset. Went for my husband's birthday. We wanted to have lunch overlooking the ocean. This place is a gem! It's on a side street off PCH, right near Zuma beach (Pointe Dume). The food is great, as was the service. The view was gorgeous. We got lucky...the weather was beautiful. After lunch we sat outside the restaurant on the two Adirondack chairs just watching the ocean. Simply perfect!
Coincidentally we ate at The Sunset at sunset and the views are spectacular. The ambiance was incredible. Probably the most comfortable dinner chairs that I have ever sat in. We were in a room upstairs that was quiet and had big windows with views of the ocean and a nice breeze blowing through. Our waiter was great and made some excellent drink and wine recommendations based on the specials and what we were ordering. The food came out pretty quickly and was delicious. You can't go wrong with any of the seafood there. We got the Cioppino, bacon wrapped Salmon, and the seafood spaghetti. All of which were delicious. I would go back the next time I am in Malibu.
Seated 25 minutes later than our 7pm appointment. Nice waiting area however, so could have been worse. Food was just ok (black cod, NY steak just so-so.). Beautiful view, nice staff. Just an odd thing to mention, however it makes a difference with respect to the dining experience....one of the staff people smelled bad, meaning this gentlemen needed deodorant. Pointing this out because it was quite noticeable to all of us at the table. Takes a bit off of the evening.
Met some good friends for dinner~ yummy oysters and shrimp to start and then we had branzino, seafood tacos, clam chowder, and a hamburger..all was great.
Service was slow, we weren't in a hurry, but we had to flag down our server to order, etc.
We WILL go back!
Omar, our server, was Amazing!! We eat at Sunset Restaurant often & love it for the view of Zuma Beach, great service & the ambiance!! They have a new chef & the fish tacos were spectacular!!! Can't wait to go back & try some other items on the menu!!
Very close to the beach, ideal to watch sunset, the place is full of life, people come to see and be seen, a mixed crowd of seniors and almost seniors in the restaurant, a bit younger around the bar perhaps... this place is not for kids, it is loud and fast, staff is busy.
The food is quiet nicer than one might expect for a beach bar, the clam chowder is one of the best I had with lots of clam. Salad are nicely made, creative , calamari were deep fried in a clean and new oil and deserts are decent.
Drinks are perhaps a bit the week point, cocktails nowadays are fantastic almost everywhere. You should send your barperson back to school...
I had the ribeye. It was a little bland and just not anything spectacular, especially for the price. The view was amazing and I would give the staff high marks. My waiter did disappear for about 20 minutes just prior to me being ready to leave so that threw off my times. Not a terrible experience by any means, but for the price, I expected a little more.
The food was great and the service was great. We got there about 20 minutes before they stop serving the brunch ,a friend walked up to the window and we started talking with her seeing as how we are from Florida and she hadn't seen this in years we talked for about 40 minutes. I walked up to the waitress and said is it too late to eat and she said no you'll just have to eat off the dinner menu I think maybe they could've made an adjustment and given us the brunch menu as we order the exact same things off the dinner menu at a higher price. We thought that was a little chumpy.
I recommend The Sunset, for it's location; the view and proximity to the ocean as well as the friendly environment. It is casual, at least for lunch. But it's great for any time of the day, really. I would definitely go back. Just one thing to mention is that the french fries could improve; they were a little underdone!
I refuse to review this restaurant because I don't want more people to want to come here. If everyone knew how perfect the location, how good the ambiance, how amazing the view of the Pacific, and how delicious the food, it would become an impossible reservation. And I don't want to do that, we want this to be available and affordable for us for years to come. So no, I will not give you a review of The Sunset.
I've been to this restaurant as a musician playing for special events but never dined here and was always taken with the location and the nice private party room. So when my family asked where I wanted to go for my birthday, The Sunset came to mind. Well, it was basically a nightmare and was so disappointed and depressed after spending over $200 for a bad experience. Here's why: I made my reservation through open table and picked the 8:00pm slot. Their slots are 15 minutes apart and they only hold them for 15 minutes past your reservation. We made sure we got there early and when we arrived at 7:45 it was JAMMED with people! The hostesses said they were running "behind" and would be ready to seat us at 8:15. 9:00 pm we still weren't seated and starving so we ordered pricy appetizers at the extremely noisy bar area fighting for a seat and watching(appropriately) a boxing match on 3 tv's! Had 2 champagne cocktails to make it through. Good news was my drinks and the calamari were really good and our server was great. Finally after 9 we got seated. Why'd they accept close reservations if they couldn't turn the tables? We weren't the only ones-many patrons waited more than an hour. Got seated at a table where the AC was blasting, and as this was a chilly night, we asked to have it turned off since we were freezing; had overhead fans too. Took 15 minutes and 5 people to get it done. Our mood was sour but we ordered and the food came out in 10minutes!! Makes me wonder why we had to wait. But the food was good and the waitress tried hard but nothing could make up for this bad service. Final blow: when she brought out a bowl of ice cream with a candle and sang a sad happy birthday. Is this chuck e. cheese and I'm 6 years old? Plus, I'm lactose intolerant and couldn't even eat it. The pear tart I ordered came out burnt but she took it off the bill. Left with heavy hearts and guess what? The room was half empty with lots of tables open. Will not come back unless I'm paid.
We enjoyed our visit to this beachside restaurant in Malibu. The ambience is a mix of casual and elegant with friendly service. The food is fresh and tasty, if a little over-priced. Try the fish tacos and carrot cake. Reserve to get a window seat with a superb ocean view.
Food was great, view was terrific, had a great dinner, as good as the time prior, that tells me a lot about a restaurant, consistent on the food (except they need to clean the vent on their split system upstairs, that thing goes on and there will be dirt everywhere!)
Food is just OK. Chef is supposed to be Italian but my Spaghetti Bolognese was subpar.
All sides that came with main courses were cold and soggy which leads me to believe that these sides probably sit there and are just added to different entrees.
Nice location, nice view but will most likely not repeat due to food quality...may be back just for drinks and appetizers.
The food that came out from the brunch menu (new) was pretty poor. Hollandaise sauce tasted wrong and the French toast was soggy. But the calamari from their lunch menu was lightly battered and lovely, so was the marinara.
The restaurant is wonderfully located across from the beach and parking is just 6 dollars
