Our dinner here was a memorable occasion. We were seated upstairs in a beautiful location next to the windows where we were treated to a show by two whales playing just offshore accompanied by dolphins. We dined early and before sunset and the views were gorgeous. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Fish tacos were enjoyed as well as Branzino cooked perfectly and beautifully presented. We look forward to a return visit soon.
Always feel like I’m on vacation when I go there. I’d like to see the Lounge reconfigured to face the windows and look out. Also, a more Bahamian/Ralph Lauren would be better than the black/grey and white. Personal style opinion.
We made reservations weeks ago for my mother’s 80th bday requesting ocean/sunset view. They forgot. We ordered for a party of six and half our order came out, the other half came out 15 minuets later ICE COLD. It took forever to get our check & pay. We didn’t want to make a huge deal about it because we didn’t want to upset my mom, but this was the WORST experience we have ever had at a restaurant. Everyone seemed overwhelmed, the kitchen was all screwed up, and the food was just plain mediocre at best. I would NEVER trust this place with an important event like this ever again. Complete disappointment. Thanks a lot!
Food was good, service was slow and the restaurant wasn’t full, the waitress never delivered what he said he would do, he should have say from the beginning that extra chips was out of the question for the tuna tartar.
Terrific, intimate and très locale spot in Malibu with an authentic view of sparkling waves and surfers. A delight for California cuisine infused with French and Mexican flavors, with an essential wine list, even a Côte Ventoux where we have a small vineyard. The service and menu satisfied our ecclectic party, from small yet super fresh oysters ( with pinot grigio) , burger with everything on the side as my dad likes it, sea bass with califlower purée, fish tacos (get the extra guacamole) and a carrot citron cake perfect to share. No nonense decor looks like the backdrop for a Cape Cod transplant in So Cal. Easy parking and an after lunch walk on the beach made for an idyllic lunch on 5 April 2018.
The staff is excellent and very nice, however had a bad experience ordering a lobster mac & cheese. There was not one piece of lobster in it and when I asked for it to be removed manager came over and explained that they use fresh ingredients is made fresh every day, but it would have to have been liquefied. Everything else was good and not too overpriced
The overall noise level was due to an enviably energetic group of kids, but otherwise the restaurant is typically just slightly noisy. Great view on a sunny day, with some spectacular seafood and starters. And the flourless tortino? Somebody save me.
My wife and I were married at this restaurant, had the after-party at this restaurant, and celebrated our first anniversary at this restaurant. We wouldn't come by if the place wasn't awesome.
Service was very good, a little less attentive than we've previously had, but it seemed like a full-house at the time so it is understandable. Some renovations being done, didn't know they even needed it!
View is unbeatable. Service was very good as well. But the food is consistently not great. Such a shame. We Lee coming back because of the ocean view and location but the food, especially for the price, isn’t very good.
Sunset is a favorite restaurant for my husband and me. The setting in front of the ocean is spectacular and the food is very good. While it is a long drive, we make the journey on a regular basis!
Food was good not great. The setting was nice by the beach. Waitress was great as well. Would go back.
My mom and I loved it. Amazing view! We were upstairs. And Andre the French waiter was great. I recommend it for a nice lunch and sunset as the name said.
Our second time having lunch here. Love this place. Our new find!
I can’t say enough good things about this place! My boyfriend and I came here on a date and loved it. The food was delicious and their cocktails were great. We ate around sunset and had a perfect view of the ocean and saw dolphins! We can’t wait to come back!
Excellent value, 3rd time here and we will come back
2/25/2018 Dined tonight and wasn't happy with the entire experience. From walking in and stating we have a reservation , which we were on time for. We were told the hostess would be right with us and to please wait to the left. Another party proceed to arrive as the hostess arrived back at the desk and went ahead to seat them without even checking with us first. We were then placed in the corner , understand the restaurant is under construction currently . Our waiter Ernesto was MIA most of the evening. Our water glasses were never refilled, my husbands Salmon arrived cold and my hamburger which was to be med rare came fully cooked, missing the cheese and the aioli sauce which was to come with the dish. It took another 10 minutes from the time it was served to check on us. I sent back my burger and explained the issue only to receive a burger now with cheese , still well done and no sauce. My husband chose not to return his salmon and just had it packed to go.
I can't say why the service was so bad as the restaurant really wasn't packed other than we just had a bad waiter who didn't care to check on his customers or make the order correct.
Won't return for quite awhile as this has left a bad taste in our mouths. The worst part is we are Malibu locals and don't really have many choices for dining.
thank you,
SA
Always love that place! All good!
The longest Sunset ..... faces true West!
Been waiting to try this spot for years. Finally pulled the trigger this Sunday and man was it packed! To be expected though, it was a gorgeous day at the beach.
Had a reservation so luckily didn't have to wait to be seated. The place was a little crammed but not a bother. We didn't get a window seat per request with the reservation but we could still get the view of the beach.
Service was fine, our server was good except I knew the moment we ordered and he didn't write any of it down that there would be some issues. We ordered the calamari to start which I have to admit was probably the best I've ever had. The pieces were thick and meaty and the marinara sauce seemed to be made in house which was excellent. As for entrees I ordered the Salmon Benedict with a side salad instead of hash-browns, manfriend ordered two eggs with chicken sausage and side of hash-browns, comes with toast as well. Also ordered a side of muffins.
We get our food, my dish comes out with two sides of hash-browns and no side salad. No muffins or toast ever come. The food tasted good except I wasn't a fan of the Salmon Benedict. The fish itself was tasty but the whole thing was wayyyy too smothered in Hollandaise sauce. Made the English muffin soggy and overpowered the taste of the fish.
Overall I'd say I would be back if the opportunity arose (with a reservation for sure) but I won't go out of my way. Some of the people who came without reservations were waiting 1hr+. Beautiful location with some good food, just made sure your server writes down your order and get ya sauces on the side.
We loved our breakfast! Delicious food and gorgeous view. Highly recommend having breakfast lunch or dinner!
We always get the fish tacos and did not disappoint. The clam chowder is also very good. We also tried the burrata cheese and tomatoes and found that to be very good but the not sure the tomatoes were heirloom.
Had a nice quiet dinner, with some great fresh seafood and a nice cocktail
First time here and was a Friday night president's day weekend. So probably not representative of normal weekend. We had seafood plater and burrata tomato plate; everything was extremely fresh and good. Seemed like they only had one waitress for the entire restaurant. Saw her once maybe twice the entire meal.
Evening started off fine, service was a bit slow. Had reservations at 5pm.
My biggest complaint was that I literally had 4 bites of my food and asked for the rest to go and they only gave me part of my dinner. I ordered mussels and frites but when I got back home to Irvine I looked in my bad and .. no fries.. what????
I did have appetizers so that’s why I took my food home; not because it wasn’t yummy.
Just disappointed. Also the cocktail orders too about 10 minutes to 15 minutes every time we ordered not to happy about that either.
Highly reccomend
We have been here several times but this was the first time seated upstairs. It was great with terrific views. We enjoy lunch here every time we come.
The cottage-y ambiance reminds one of Nantucket-on-Zuma Beach. There’s noplace like it!
Since we were married at The Sunset, we have Valentine's Day dinner there every year. But tradition alone isn't what brings us back. The food and drinks continue to be excellent, with interesting presentations being added every year. The view of course is amazing and we love getting there in time to have our margaritas while watching the sunset at the Sunset.
This year, the crab cakes were divine as usual -- the perfect combination of crispy outside and soft, warm inside. The spiny lobster salad was also excellent. My wife likes her filet mignon medium well, yet many restaurants apparently can't imagine anyone wanting a steak cooked that much and bring her a medium rare steak. The Sunset is creative yet takes direction well--her filet was cooked perfectly, exactly how she wanted it. My crab-stuff salmon was similarly cooked perfectly and was really tasty.
We were a little disappointed that the usual lava cake was not a dessert option this year, that is, until we tried the chocolate mousse. Never mind. This was the best chocolate mousse either of us had ever had.
Bravo to The Sunset for yet another perfect Valentine's dinner.
Only negative is that we couldn’t get the desired view as requested but, overall the food was amazing and the service was okay.
Our experience at the Sunset was fun and delicious. It definitely helped that we had booked through open table as the restaurant reserved us a GREAT table that otherwise we would have been waiting for a long time . The service was exceptional, fun loving and tip top!
love the food and service but the noise is impossible !!! Also, they leave the windows open when it is cold so it is freezing in the restaurant.
Our server was so attentive and they kept the hot rolls with butter coming! Couldn't have asked for a more enjoyable, rewarding experience. The food was delicious -- nothing out of this world, but really, really good.
Overall we had a great time on a beautiful Malibu day. The Sunset is blessed with an amazing beachside location, and they manage not to mess it up by providing a tasty meal in a clean, attractively appointed space, with decent service. Look forward to coming here again.
I had the Fish Tacos, asked for not hot spicy. It could have had some sauce that was not spicy HOT. I found it very bland. For people that have pain when they have Spicy HOT food you should have some sauce that has flavor but not Spicy HOT.
I had to ask for water 4 times before it was served.
Great food, amazing view, and great service. We had the breakfast burrito, the vanilla pancakes and the fried chicken sandwich. They were all soooooo yummy! Definitely going back for more!
What a wonderful place, their staff were so happy and nice, very welcoming and great New Year's party. We had a great time for been our first visit. We definitely going back soon. The view was perfect dinner for our romantic dinner. Thank you
Over book tables but accommodated is upstairs. Turned out great.
Great time with family on New Year's Eve. The Sunset had a wonderful menu available for that day. We had Lobster Florentine, Filet Mignon, Scallops, Crabcakes, Chicken and more. Everything was fantastic. Price was a little steep but that's Malibu.
The wait staff is always professional and knowledgeable. Hostess curtious. Always enjoy my meal here.
My husband and I ate here for his birthday dinner. Service was great - food was awesome! Oh...the VIEW!!!! What an AMAZING VIEW of the ocean! There was a sunset wedding going on right across the street - it was a beautiful ceremony to witness. We will be back for sure!
This was our 7th visit to the Sunset and Everything was just perfect!
We had our anniversary dinner here. Great sunset views! The food was fine but little overpriced. The valet service was conveniente since the parking area is usually full with cars trying to watch the sunset
