The Study is offering an elegant setting, positioning itself to be a gathering place for locals as well as hotel guests to escape the bustle of King Street and step into the timeless atmosphere of Old Town.
Like a book, The Study tells a story through the lens of its main characters – unique cocktails and a menu of seasonally inspired plates.
The cocktails are crafted to highlight the elegance of the hotel, featuring bold flavors like Smoked Beef Tallow-infused Woodford Reserve, Mustard Seed Infused Apple Bitters, Rosemary Infused Aperol and Grapefruit Sherbet. . These thought-provoking elements are the foundation of The Study's concept, which offers an escape from the ordinary.
As an extension of the cocktail program, Chef McCall has carefully developed a menu that complements the sophistication of the spirits. The menu offers small, shareable plates with an emphasis on local product driven by the season

Food was great, especially the lamb and scallops. Great service.
Quiet place that feels intimate. Great cocktails that are variations on classics, and nice selection of food.
A really lovely place, with amazing food (the scallops were some of the best I’ve ever tasted), great service and a quietly upscale atmosphere. Lovely for any special dinner.
Outstanding service and food!
The Morrison House in Old Town Alexandria used to be a charming boutique hotel. Under new management, its public rooms are like corporate offices. "The Study" suggests books and charm; the dining room was completely sterile. Although the server was sweet and responsive, he was completely untrained--a serious indictment of poor management, not of him. I had reserved for five of us. We were seated at a table for six, and we had to remove the extra chair and place setting ourselves. When he brought the desserts, he tried to put them down on a table laden with numerous dirty dishes. I had to ask him to remove the dirty dishes first. I was taking guests out and was so embarrassed by the amateur service. Again, this performance reflects on management, not on the server. Don't bother going here.
Great, small dishes. Food was better than expected and the ambiance was very quaint.
We went for restaurant week and the menu was not a deal or well thought out. The service was meh. The server was overworked and it showed.
Great dinner. Wonderful ambience. Derrick is fantastic on tbe piano.
Had their restaurant week menu. Derrick on the piano was great. Service fantastic. Crab salad and lamb chops sublime. Delicious!!
Highly recommend it.
Delicious small plates meal during restaurant week. We took advantage of the three option selection to try six things - all terrific (lamb chops, short ribs, crab salad, pimento cheese platter, etc.). Then dessert - the black forest cake and carrot cakes were good! Very quiet during our early dinner - perfect.
A single employee was acting as host, bartender and server for the entire restaurant. And no one was at the hotel front desk, so I had to walk into the kitchen to find someone to help us. Therefore service gets a single star. And the restaurant week menu had limited vegitarian or pescatarian options. We walked out.
Don’t. Just don’t bother. I was SHOCKED at how terrible the service was. It took about 10 minutes to get water... another 10 to get drinks... then about 5 minutes later the server graced us with her presence. 25 minutes in we ordered our food... and just as it was supposed to come out, the server informs us that an item had been 86’d. Really? You just NOW figured that out? I had to personally get up and get a pitcher of water to refill our glasses and ask the bartender for a second round of drinks. Food was pretty good... but that simply doesn’t matter if the service is this terrible. Please do not waste your hard earned money here.
Anthony was more like an attentive butler than a waiter, knowing when to approach without being intrusive. The menu is limited yet the offerings were well prepared. Great spot for breakfast.
No lunch on Sundays...
The Study is a new and hidden gem in Old Town. The venue is small which allows for an intimate experience. The food is simply excellent. We ordered several small plates and couldn’t have enjoyed them more. The piano music is “old school” in a great way. There are any number of places playing music, but very few with a pianist who was classic and fun at the same time. The food and wine menus are limited but that just made the evening simpler and more enjoyable. Give me ten excellent choices rather than twenty that are all OK. We enjoyed every aspect of our evening. A great hang out, dress up, eat, enjoy, date night venue with ambiance.
The service is great!!! Super attentive and kind
Perhaps this was just NYE but the service was terrible. I sat at the bar, ordered a glass of wine about 3 times and never got a single drink served to me the whole night. I also only got about half the food I ordered. I was also there for about 2.5 hours because the bartender was so slow.
Jim our bartender was friendly and fun to talk with. The food was great! Will be back
We were in Mt. Vernon and Alexandria for the day and we had dinner in Alexandria after our sightseeing day. Nice place, it was inside a hotel which I didn’t know but still so nice. We were early because we were tired and had to drive back to DC and return our car, so not sure how crowded it gets. Only down side was all of the food came at once so the pace of eating was off. Couldn’t finish all of it so had to take some home.
My siblings and I took my Dad there for his birthday lunch on a Friday afternoon. We enjoyed nice cocktails, lunch and good service. They very kindly gave us a complimentary dessert to share in celebration of my Dad’s birthday.
Wonderful and generous sized small plates! We had fried chicken, beet salad, short ribs, pork belly tacos, and lamb chops. Everything was excellent. We highly recommend the food.
I made reservations at the study because I thought it would be a nice quiet place that was festive for me and some friends to grab food and a drink. It started off as quiet - we were sat at the dining room to the side of the bar. But then a woman sat at a table next to us and yelled on her phone for the next hour and half. For some reason it appeared as if she were a manager or owner but the yelling was very disruptive and no one on staff asked her to keep it down. The service was also extremely slow. About 30 minutes to get drinks both times we ordered. I’m disappointed because the Study could be a really special place to gather if the service and ambience were better.
The staff could not have been nicer but this is not a great lunch spot. We were the only folks there and while the food was good enough, nothing special. It is such a good location in Alexandria and we expected a little holiday coziness. Perhaps another meal of the day there is more festive.
The atmosphere, quality of food, and attentiveness of the staff were absolutely exceptional! I haven't had such a great experience in a while. What a perfect evening and a perfect spot in Old Town!
The small plates were amazing!
Great service & nice ambience.
Ok. Service was nice. But you had one person doing everything and running back and forth the whole time.
Could definitely use a hostess and some additional wait staff.
The food good, not great. Everyone enjoyed their meals but nothing that left us wanting to return.
Drinks were good probably the best part.
Would return for mAybe drinks and apps but nothing more.
Service was courteous but very uneven. Food was terrific. Hope they’re able to increase the wait staff - great potential for a top notch restaurant.
The service was overwhelmingly poor, there was only one person waiting on the entire restaurant. The food was average. Would not recommend.
This is great place for a romantic dinner. The service is excellent as well, just for a perfect night with your love one. I recommend to order small plates and try different things.
The Study cancelled brunch service without letting us know. We arrived then we're told due to low staffing that brunch was cancelled.
We were looking for quiet and cozy, but especially quiet. Tired of shouting over an unholy din, as seems to be required in all the best Washington metro area restaurants. This new eatery was perfect for us, and it's located in a charming boutique hotel, Morrison House, in Old Town. The only drawback: Traffic if you're coming from Tysons Corner or Falls Church at rush hour on a Friday night. Still, it turned out to be worth it. We loved the cream of asparagus soup, the flank steak and the salmon, and decadent deserts. I'm trying the lamb next time. Tip: A more expansive website about what's on offer might be helpful.
Absolutely charming! First: it's gorgeous, kind of elegant art deco. Second, the food choices lovely -- perfectly cooked lamb chops, a taste of heaven pork belly taco, great wine, beer and cocktail list, desserts so good that it seems that chef actually tasted them. Graceful, friendly service, and a live piano in the background. My new home away from home....
Swanky spot but could be better.
Lights could be a bit dimmer for a more romantic ambiance.
There's a piano player who plays music but that's about it. Once he/she stops playing, you can hear everyone's conversation. Some light music over speakers wouldn't hurt.
We only ordered 1 drink each and they were exceptional so 👍🏾
Nice quiet place for a lovely weekday breakfast celebration
My preferred Chef was not on duty tonight, that's why my rating wasn't a 5-star all the way.
The server was the only person covering the bar and restaurant. So, service was very slow.
The piano player was outstanding and helped to mask the arrival of an 8-person table.
The menu had changed and did not include the healthy and creative tapas I was spoiled by on my previous visit with my veteran Chef.
The Study is a hidden gem in Old Town Alexandria! Situated in The Morrison Hotel, The Study is a relaxed lounge with delicious cocktails and a small plates menu. Our visit on a Thursday evening was greeted with a pianist playing requests, we lingered for a few hours enjoying a number of fine bourbons. We look forward to our next visit.
Amazing bartender and would Def go back for the lump crab toast... Delicious! Lamb and pork belly taco was so so.
My girlfriends and I went here for dinner on a Saturday night. We were the only ones in The Study although there were others in the bar area. We received great attention from the waiter/bartender and chef.
Great food. Great drinks. Great ambiance. We plan on going back soon.
Wonderful small plates, we tried about all of them. The lamb is to die for, all were beyond exceptional. Craig, the weekend bartender was absolutely delightful to talk with and the people passing through were fun to talk with. As a local, this is a hidden gem and a fun way to see visitors to our great town.
Our waiter Anthony was great!
