Our server was fantastic and there was a classy, genteel feel to the lovely, intimate dining space. We were distracted by a too-cold room/draft and the music playing over the speakers (before the wonderful piano player started in the adjacent room) was just slightly louder than we preferred. But it could be we're overly sensitive to that. The food was GOOD, but not particularly memorable - though it was artfully presented. The "aged butter" starter was the best part of the meal. The chicken dish was just fine (and the potatoes on the side could not have been better), but the the “Run Down Stew” entree looked very pretty but honestly, the portion seemed more like appetizer- or generous starter-sized than entree sized. The sauce on that stew was pretty good, but didn't have a lot to remember. Overall, I think this would be a great place to stop by for a beautifully handcrafted drink - the atmosphere is very appealing and welcoming. THAT is what we'd recommend to a friend if they found themselves in Alexandria and wanted a darling little hidden gem to settle in for a nice drink. But we both thought that while the food was good, it wasn't anything we'd come back to have again. We were both feeling too chilled from the very cold room temperature to stick around for dessert, but the dessert menu definitely looked tempting. The highlight of the evening was the INCREDIBLE service and that magical aged butter.

My husband and I came here for our anniversary and it has been our meal in Alexandria by far! Our server was very attentive and gave the best recommendations. We had the beef tartare, the short rib and the run down stew. To top off our amazing meal, our server brought us a delicious dessert to celebrate our special evening. As an added bonus the drinks were so good and I loved their themes! Highly recommend.

We treated ourselves to dinner & drinks at The Study and it was just an outstanding experience all around. Leo and Earl provided incredible and thoughtful service throughout our evening and the pianist made the environment truly memorable. 10/10 would recommend dinner at The Study! Oh and get the beef tartare, it’ll knock your socks off.

I really wanted to love this, but there were a lot of misses. The bread for the cheese was over toasted and dry; it needed moisture of some kind because the triangles of cheese were fine but not amazing. I'm unsure how "dutch oven" the bread was. It felt store-bought. Overall, The Study is over-priced. $32 for a 2-square inches of cod (ie, catch of the day)? The lobster claw and potato layer was the best bite of the evening, but the lobster was over cooked and needed salt and butter - something to cut through the rubbery texture. The desserts weren't great either. The use of rail tequila with the sweet corn cake was a misstep; the cake itself was dry and the sauce didn't help because it was killed from the taste of cheap tequila. The tres leches was also dry; weird considering most of that dish should be liquid and fat. The above aside, the drinks were good. Our server was nice and cordial. We were met with a jazz pianist who was maybe the best part of the experience. The atmosphere is quiet and the dining area is separated from the bar area which is a plus depending on your mood/dining preferences.

Unexpected best dinner ever! Did a staycation at the Morrison House. Got in a little late, it was cold and the night of a themed bar crawl. Decided to stay in and eat at The Study. Hands down best meal ever. Every dish was better than the last. Totally exceeded any expectation. Also, Leo and Earl made the night even better. Super attentive and very knowledgeable. The Study is a welcomed addition to Historic Old Town. The cold smoked himachi and scallops were absolutely amazing - followed by the perfect, medium rare strip loin. Leo and Earl made the experience smooth and enjoyable, and Manny’s drinks are always a work of art. We look forward to dining at The Study again!

Great vibe and love the decor. The service was great, very attentive, and made sure we enjoyed our experience. There was a piano man playing, which was really nice. The cocktails, the food, and the dessert are truly on par with the upscale ambiance. I can see how just hanging at the bar would be a good experience as well. I will return.

The ambiance was really great. Service was very pleasant albeit slow. Food was okay for restaurant week, however one of the desserts, the Tres Leches Cake dish, was comically bad. Had some sort of... vinegar cream sauce. The worst thing I had ever tried in my life without hyperbole. However, the staff replaced it to make it right - so thanks for that.

We've had a lot of mediocre food in Old Town - but this place blew our minds back when we came in November 2022. The broth on the Run Down Stew was to die for. I raved about it for months. So when we saw The Study participating in restaurant week, we made a reservation right away. Unfortunately this time was a disappointment. I’m not sure if there’s a new team of chefs, or they just weren’t on their game, but the Run Down stew lacked any significant flavor. The seafood was cooked perfectly, with no seasoning. Their steak wasn’t seasoned, and the tres leches reminds us there's a milk shortage. It should have been called Un Leche. I had to cut it with a knife. The service was impeccable, both Earl and Paola were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. The music was also good. We will definitely be back, just to see if this was an off night.

The food at the study was magnificent. The steak was MIND BLOWING! The drinks were not impressive, and the service was average. The staff was incredibly friendly, but our drinks took forever, and our appetizers came before our beverages. They were out of the drink I wanted to get, so I was forced to try another one - it was good, but it felt like something I could easily make at home. The food and ambiance were fantastic, though. Good place for a date night.

This was a very private small area you had to walk through the bar to get seated in the back so it was a bit confusing. The service was really good. The appetizers were great especially the cold, smoked Hamachi. I took a friend here for her birthday I got the steak and she got the roasted chicken with fingerling potatoes, when I food came out and I cut into my steak it was perfect but the chicken was raw inside so we had to send it back. All they did was stick it back in the oven so the chicken was burnt on the outside and very dry on the inside, not juicy, tender or moist. It had no flavor to it at all for such a high quality food restaurant he should’ve at least been seasoned. Overall experience was great except for the main course of my friends, not being good at all.

This was one of the worst meals I have had in a long time and I was so disappointed. It started with no host or clear way to get to our table. The cocktail sounded interesting with but came as a sweet custard covered mess (supposed to be a “foam”) that was poorly thought out and not easy to drink with mismatched flavors. The bread was nothing more than rye toast, the app was served on what appeared and tasted like store bought chips, and the main course was a flavorless soup missing the main ingredient (lobster) and with a large chunk of inedible octopus. When we pointed out the missing lobster, it then came out poached in a soup of watered butter that could not be added to the soup. We asked for more bread, this time untoasted, and it tasted even more off the shelf and they charged us for it notwithstanding the lobster snafu. Very expensive too. Would never go back.

Servers were great. food and drink come out in a reasonable time. We had just drinks and apps. The little fool drink was very jucy hard to taste the liqure while my gin drink (cant remeber the name) was very good. The Dutch over bread was cold toast we only ate because we were hungry. The Hamachi crudo was over powered by the smoke infusion you use to add flair. My first few bites, all I could taste was the smoke.

I had envisioned a little more intimate, subdued vibe based on the website description. The bar was packed and noisy. The dining room was nice, but the noise from the bar spilled in and it wasn't super intimate in there either. The cocktails were excellent. The food was not. The beef tartare was the best of the lot we ordered, but the scallops were bitter and the potato/caviar thing was basically tasteless. The beurre blanc it came in was ok after I asked for a spoon to try it but it was light and didn't flavor the potato part of the dish. Service was great and that is hard to come by these days, so very much appreciated!!

Cocktails were creative and delicious. Would go back just for cocktails. Dining room is very small and lacks any kind of ambiance. We were awkwardly seated between the dining room and bar and at the entrance to the kitchen, but this was actually better because we had a front row to the piano man. Entrees were flavorful but not executed well. The pork belly was described by the manager/waiter as having very crispy skin. Mine had a few char marks on top but was not crispy at all. And the sugar snap peas were not deveined, so I did it as I was eating because it was not edible otherwise. My husband enjoyed his steak.
