The Student Prince Cafe
Went to the Student Prince to take advantage of the Springfield Restaurant Week specials and we were not disappointed by this city icon! Food was excellent. Service was prompt and friendly. Atmosphere was quaint and cozy by the fireplace but the place was lively too. No complaints at all ... only compliments on a very nice evening out. We will definitely be back!
I've been going to "The Fort"(as locals call it) for 60+ years and it's still going strong! Before the new ownership it had gotten "a bit tired" even though the food did not. But the sprucing up of the original rooms was smart and now it sparkles and oozes of charm and you truly feel as though you're in the middle of Germany! The stein collection has to be one of the most significant in the world and Rupert and Rudi were understandably very proud of it. It's just magnificent! The menu has been tweaked here and there and is a pleasant surprise. They were smart to keep a lot of the old favorites and what they added was just right. A fine job all around. And the prices remain very reasonable for food of that quality. The menu is extensive, well planned and sure to please everyone. My father used to have lunch every day with a colleague for over 50+ years and the restaurant has this kind of local following. Family celebrations, business lunches and dinners, just going out to either lunch or dinner for no particular occasion is a treat.
They have a charming bar on the other side of the main dining rooms which has a more casual vibe but food is served there as well or you can go in and just order a drink. All are welcome. I eat out a lot at similar restaurants in the Springfield and Hartford area and when I want some comfort and nostalgia and excellent food this is where I head! Go, you won't be sorry!
Family birthday celebration. Food has slipped slightly. Sauerbraten was very vinegary as was red cabbage. The meat seemed to be chewy- not a tendency of highly marinaded sauerbraten. The price was excellent, the restaurant was clean and the service was great.
Excellent as usual. Even though it was not why we went there the restaurant week menu was amazing. Love the place!
We really enjoyed our experience at Student Prince recently. Our waitress was friendly informative and efficient. The food was delicious. We highly recommend this restaurant!!
Girlfriends birthday, her first time there. Food was great as always and our server mike was fantastic.
We love The Student Prince. We especially like to visit when the game menus are out. Food is wonderful, staff is friendly and you can't beat the ambience. I keep joking that I'll need to bring binoculars to get a better view of the assorted steins and beautiful pieces that surround and add to the entire dining experience.
We've been coming to the Student Prince for over 45 years. There have been a few changes here and there but overall it is still a fantastic experience.
Haven't been to the Student Prince since I moved out the area 25 years ago. Loved that the decor was so similar. Three seafood specials on a Friday in Lent was terrific. Each sounded better than the next. I opted for halibut and it did not disappoint. If I hadn't been traveling, I would have enjoyed something from the great tap beer list.
It was a perfect evening! We asked to be seated at a high top in the bar area as they had a musician playing. Our waiter Patrick was knowledgeable, charming & funny. Every item, from the drinks to the apps, the entrees to the dessert & coffee, was beautifully presented & tasted phenomenal. You bet we will be going back several times.
The Student Prince used to be so good. Unfortunately the service on this evening was poor. The waiter was unavailable to refill water glasses. Asked if we would like bread and then never brought it out. The meals were good but everyone was missing something and we felt as though we had to keep asking. Once the food was delivered that was it. We never saw the waiter until it was time to pay the bill. No refill on water, no second drink, no one asking how your meal was. Disappointing, this is not the type of service you think of when referring to the Student Prince. Portions seemed a little smaller than usual. Crowd was nonexistent after 7:45. No reason service couldn't have been better. The table was in a poor spot right next to linens etc... so every time someone came to clean another table, it was a disruption. Not the best spot in the house.
Haven't been to the Student Prince in a long time and was happy with how much is still the same. There were 5 of us and all our meals were quite good. The fried Camembert cheese is still outstanding!
Awesome meal, as always. Our server Kat was excellent; she truly made the night amazing by going above and beyond. We’ll be back soon for the best German food around !
The ambience is terrific but the food is mediocre compared to authentic German cuisine.
I hadn’t been there in many years and took my 2 sons there before the Springfield Symphony. We were seated right away and our server was very attentive. We ordered drinks and onion rings (lightly breaded and a large portion). Dinner was great. The fish and chips was two large pieces with a crispy batter. I had mushroom spatzel which was essentially German Mac and cheese. My other son had the German sampler and he loved the goulash. Very large portions. Definitely will go again!
This was the first time at the Student Prince and it won't be the last. I loved the ambience, the wait staff was very helpful and prompt. The food was delicious, except for the apple strudel, I didn't see any walnuts or raisens in it otherwise everything was great.
Everything good - as usual!

We have been patrons of the Student Prince for many years. We always look forward to eating there when we are in the Springfield area. We were in the area over this past weekend and made reservations for dinner. We were very disappointed in the quality of the food. The Brussels sprouts that we ordered as an appetizer were very tasty, but not hot. Both the pork and the veal schnitzel were also only warm and were very heavily breaded and soggy rather than having the thin and crispy breading that we have come to expect. And finally, the garlic spinach and the noodles were also only lukewarm. There are other German restaurants in the Springfield area and I think we will try one of those next time.
The best overall ambiance anywhere outside of Germany. Maybe inside as well!
I've been going to the student prince every year since 1983. fabulous staff, food and decor. I highly recommend it.
Dinner took a very long time to arrive and my husbands meal was very poor. He only ate a bit of it and it was removed from the bill and we appreciated it but overall we were pretty disappointed
We normally have dinner at least twice a year at prince maybe it was an off night
It has been years since I have been to the Student Prince since I have not lived in Springfield for many years. However, we took the Trip Advisor report and decided to try it out. Gosh! I was JUST AS I REMEMBERED IT FROM YEARS ago. I booked our table using Open Table, and though they were busy when we arrive 1/2 hour early, they found a booth for us in the Student Prince side (the bar area). Our waitress was terrific and helped us to figure out what we might enjoy for our meals. We each had a different dish, and each of us were pleased with what we ate. The only problem was one we cause. We ate dessert -- it was excellent -- but we did not need that after our great meal.
So would we go back again? You bet! It's just that trips to Springfield are rare for us.
Excellent service and delicious German cuisine!! The giant pretzel is amazing!
Even with a reservation and a half-empty restaurant, we were seated in an awful back room next to storage and the kitchen. Despite the lack of customers, service was painfully slow. Not worth the hassle of trying to find parking downtown (no valet parking on Sunday afternoons).
Great food and atmosphere
Will go again
German food for me and surf and turf for my husband
Great selection of entrees and appetizers, many not traditional German food. Pleasant server, broad range of beers, including regional and national brands of craft beers in addition to German brews.
Very nice place. We enjoyed our late lunch there, around 2 pm. Great food, wine and service. A “must” if you are in the Springfield area.
Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Salmon with crab was delicious. Steak was also cooked to perfection. Duck wings, butterflied shrimp and fried Camembert cheese to start our meals were wonderful. Finished up our meals with their signature chauvenette’. Can’t wait to go back
Sadly, our Valentine Day experience was so terrible, we had to go somewhere else a few days later just to compensate for the lack of quality by the amateur chef they have hired to replace, at what used to be the best place to eat in Springfield. For shame, Student Prince. We expected better from you. Our good waitress compensated slightly for the tough chewy veal covered in watered down tomato paste, and the tasteless cream sauce on my husband's veal. Even the famous salad, a once loved staple, has been replaced by different greens, which taste terrible with Roquefort. So, you'll see some of your old favorites on the menu, but they've been replaced by watered down similarities, cooked by a watered down chef. The prices however have doubled. There was another menu, the GAME menu, which had NO ELK?! If we had come to Student Prince in years past, the chef would have found a piece of elk to cook for my husband, regardless of the menu options. Really?? Wow. Looking for a better GERMAN restaurant now.
Food was great! Service was great as well.
We love this place, one of our favorite restaurants, always excellent food and service
Jeff is the best waiter on the planet. If you even had the shadow of a thought that you needed something, he was already delivering. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he could actually read minds. They should have a 24K gold-plated bust of Jeff right inside the door, as a temple of inspiration for the staff and a promise of excellence to customers. If The Fort can find a willing mad scientist, they should clone an army of Jeff so no customer ever leaves unhappy. Jeff is love. Jeff is life. None leave with satisfaction except through the almighty Jeff.
Our server natalie was amazing ! First time for both of us. My boyfriend is a chef and had great things to say about the food
Plenty of menu choices. Service was great. Pricing was reasonable. Would go there again. Would recommend this restaurant.
Options include standard American fare as well as classic German cuisine. Feb. is "game month".
We have been enjoying the Student Prince for over 50 years.
Have been going to The Fort for many years. Don't usually sit in a booth but we enjoyed the privacy.
We all enjoyed our meals. Fantastic. Granddaughter had salmon and she said is was really good. Daughter had Sauerbraten which she always orders and as usual it was great. I had Jaeger Schnitzel. Very good. Our waitress was delightful. Spot on!! Overall can't say enough good things about The Fort. Brings back so memories of going there with family.
It was not our first visit. We have visited at least once annually over the past decade, excluding brief intervals when the restaurant was closed apparently due to management changes. Our prior visits were on early Sunday afternoons. This was our first Saturday visit; the restaurant this time was much livelier, with live music and surrounding chatter that were much unlike the comparatively-sedate environment on Sundays. Thanks to our OpenTable reservation, we were seated not long after arriving, despite a somewhat-crowded customer mix. But the pleasant and inviting courtesy that the wait staff have displayed on Sundays was not evident on that Saturday night. What followed after we were seated was quite disappointing: it seemed that two of the nearby table servers studiously avoided making eye contact with us for what at least a 30-minute period, and consequently we did not have an opportunity even to place our orders until a gentleman (apparently the manager) finally did make eye contact. Only then did one of the table servers appear to receive our orders, then providing an implausible explanation that she had assumed that a different table server was responsible for our table. I say "implausible," because even if some confusion might have existed (which is questionable), the prominent presence of menus on our table for 30 minutes should have altered each of the table servers that a need existed to verify whether we had received any service. Thankfully, the food's arrival time afterward was not unreasonably late, although I can say that the food's preparation was uneven: my entree was tasty, but the Spätzle side dish was less so - perhaps burned in places. Despite the table server's seemingly-forced smile, we were left with a sense that the server (whom we would have no reason to know, or vice versa) seemed disinclined to have been assigned to our table in the first place. But the manager checked in on us several times; that was the saving grace for this evening.
We're from the Boston area and love German food. I've heard about this place but we never had the opportunity to visit. Our first time here and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. My husband was daring and went with the Game Sampler. Nothing gamey about the taste. He thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the Crispy Duck and it was exactly that. A nice crisp skin and moist tasty meat underneath. Our server Mishie was one of the best we've ever had. We'll definitely make a trip back.
Pleasantly Surprised - Definitely would return to try different offerings. The food was great and the service was good.
Dinner was amazing. It was my first time there and I ordered off of their game menu. Best food I've had in a long while and our server was wicked attentive. I also love that they have valet parking because parking in that area can be a pain. Will definitely go back.
