The Stinking Rose Ratings and Reviews
Very disappointed. What had happened in the past 5 years with this restaurant? It used to be one of my favorite restaurant in North Beach 20 years ago. I visited there about 5 years ago with my husband, and it was his first time there and he loved it there. We visited SF briefly this time so we visited there with expectations. Receptionist had no smile, waiter was rude with minimum service, bread was COLD and HARD, and the meatloaf was not even warm enough. Food quality went down. Such a disappointment. I do not recommend this place to my friends anymore. Sad to see good restaurant goes down like this.
Went to SF Stinking Rose with friends and enjoyed the ambiance, service and food.
Garlic ice cream was a bit "different" but the prime rib, roasted Dungeness crab and pasta dishes were all excellent. It's in the North Beach neighborhood with limited street parking but there are several parking garages nearby. Would dine here again.
Service was very good and attentive. This restaurant can get very busy so take caution when navigating as waiters are bustling around. It's just unfortunate a work related function was seated next to our table so the atmosphere was pretty loud and obnoxious. My family could barely hear and enjoy the rest of our meal.
The food was very good. Ambiance and service was mediocre but turned much better. We were initially seated in the corner of a room in the back, upstairs. After we had been there for a couple of a while a large group came in that was very loud. We asked the waitress if she could seat us elsewhere and she was great. Put is in a cool little room with glass doors that was nice and quiet. Great experience.
We made a reservation for 4pm on a Wednesday since we were in town for the day. There was absolutely no need for the reservation since there were only 2 other groups (3-4 people) in the restaurant at this time. Our waiter was a bit awkward and only checked on us twice during our whole dining time. We had to constantly ask for refills and extra items due to never being checked up on. Now the food was amazing so please don’t let the service comment steer you the other way. We both ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and wow it was delicious. The bread was also amazing... but it was cold. I expected it to be warm at least but hey maybe that’s how they serve it. Overall it was a great meal. The service was subpar at best... but the bus boys were great and friendly! Go for the food, not the service. Oh and they throw on an extra 4.9% to “offset wages” or something. Bill: 2 spaghetti and meatballs and 1 soft drink... came out to $68. Quite pricey but overall I would pay it again for that amazing dish. Hope you have a better experience!
I was very much llooking forward to having s great dinner at this restaurant following a show (Beach Blanket Babylon), but the restaurant fell short of expectations in so many areas! To begin with, even though we had made our reservation weeks in advance, we were seated in a small booth that was right by the bathroom and dirty dish station. We ordered our bar drinks snd appetizer first but they brought out the lukewarm Bagna Calda app very soon and no drinks. I needed to flag down our waitress and tell her I really wanted to start with drinks (and not be halfway through the app before the martini and wine was served). The timing of everything was off the entire evening. We should have learned our lesson on drinks, but ordered a second one each, which didn't come until half way through the entree. I had the vegetable lasagna, which was nothing special. I had ordered from the price fixe menu which included a very small Caesar salad which was good. We had to ask for anchovies, which is a standard request for a classic Caesar salad, but seemed to be unusual for this restaurant (although they did comply). I normally would not order dessert, but it was included in the price fixe, so I ordered it to go. I had one bite of the desert when we got home and it was tasteless, so I threw it out. My husband had the boneless short ribs which were tender. I believe the negative reviews related to this restaurant are sadly, all based in truth and although I wanted to love this restaurant, it is nothing more than a tourist trap.
With all the authentic Italian restaurants in the City and especially in the North Beach area, I would recommend saving your money and going elsewhere. The food just wasn't very good, it is expensive for what you get (small portions) and although the server was a sweet person, there seemed to be a real disconnect between the servers, the bar and the kitchen.
Absolutely wonderful. My family and I loved the entire experience. I even bought two shirts. I had the large prime rib my wife had the smaller portion. It was so tender I could cut it with just a fork. Garlic relish served with fresh bread was a great start to a great meal. We just love the Stinking Rose !!!
Although the food was very good especially the Garlic Soaking in a Hot Tub and the Garlic Noodles, HOWEVER, I was unimpressed by the service. It was pretty busy and they brought the food out in a timely manner but that was about it. No one checked to see if we were satisfied with our meal, wanted another drink, etc., everyone was rushing around and there was no follow up until the check was provided. This is on the management for understaffing their restaurant.
I used to frequent the Stinking Rose when I lived in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the quality of service and food have since gone down the drain. My husband and I dined here with my parents and I was really excited for my parents to experience it as they have never been. Unfortunately, I was disappointed and a bit embarrassed. Our server was not very personable. When inquiring about the wines, he seemed annoyed that we hadn't just made a decision off the bat. Then the food... what happened to the sizzling plates? The shrimp and mussels were TINY.
Sad to say... as I truly used to love this restaurant... but I will not be back.
We had a very rough time at Stinking Rose. Although we arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation, the maitre d would not even speak to us. There was a mob outside the front door suggesting that the restaurant had greedily overbooked itself for Thanksgiving. Speaking of doors they left the door to the street open the entire evening freezing the diners. Our waiter was surly and arrived very late.
Met out-of-town friends in the city for the holiday. I was grateful they were open on Thanksgiving Day as my first four choices were not. All their food is pre frozen - crab fish garlic vegetables - yet the price is more in the fine dining range. And they don’t admit to the pre frozen quality as I asked if the crab was fresh and was assured it was. That’s a big fat lie. It’s more a Denny’s coffee shop quality, okay in a pinch but otherwise....
My family and I ate at the Stinking Rose on Thanksgiving. I chose this restaurant because it was open on the holiday (when many others were not) and because of its fun location in North Beach. The enclosed booth we were seated in was pleasant noise-wise, but felt cramped and claustrophobic. The food and service were certainly adequate, but not outstanding, and I don't think I would return for dinner on any other day of the year.
