The Stinking Rose Ratings and Reviews
We were given a gift certificate. However, while we sat in a location with a view to the street. It did not give us a chance to see the true ambiance and character of the restaurant until we had to use the restrooms and then saw the character the place had. I am not sure I would come back again. The food was excellent. The service was ok.
Amazing food, amazing ambience.
I had a large group, and we got a seat right away. Staff was great - but I think it must have been busy because we didn’t see our waiter often.
Also - as is true for most food in San Fran, the price was really high.
However - the food we had was amazing.
This was one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I would recommend it to anyone visiting San Fran. Living in Colorado I made these reservations months ahead of time. I may have come on a bad night but this experience was only average. The food was good but not as great as normal and the service was slow and unfriendly. The place was not as busy as I have seen it normally so this confused me.
My third time here. Here's why. First - no corkage so you can enjoy your favorite wine. Second - great steamed clams - my favorite of anywhere I've been in these past decades Third - what a great value. Generous portions at fair prices of really tasty stuff. I'm sure I'll be back.
Highly overrated. Would never recommend to anyone. Potato garlic soup like water and no potatoes and the crust on top was raw. Everyone at our table had overcooked food. The one positive thing was that the lettuce in their ridiculously boring salad was fresh.
For a classic Italian north beach restaurant the food was not very good.
I had spaghetti and meatballs. How hard is that? Noodles were dry and pasty, sauce mediocre.
Salad was wilted. Definitely would not recommend or go back to stinking rose with so many
other good restaurants near by.
I could easily make better at home
Pricey for what you get, and what you get isn’t very good. Portions & taste of our food wasn’t good. The salad was acceptable in price & size, but that was all. I say, skip this restaurant! And when I made the reservation, I stated that it was for a birthday....other tables got sang to & maybe a special dessert, we got nothing.
This place is really different than other restaurants in North Beach. It's got a unique vibe and ambiance and a themed menu. I wouldn't say it's a must see if you are on a quick visit to the city, but if you are here for an extended stay, this is definitely a very unique place that you should check out.
Note: if you are on a date night, all options have loads of garlic, which means you'll both leave stinking and won't notice your paramour's stench ;)
The stinking rose was a recommendation from a friend, and will be a recommendation to friends from us. Although it’s a bit gimmicky with over the top garlic love, the food was delicious. We both had pasta and the gnocchi was perfectly cooked! It’s short of 5 stars because
- it was a little too hot in the restaurant, could use some better air flow
- service was good but lacked anything special
- a bit gimmicky and a tad overpriced
The Stinking Rose is one of those restaurants that you love to find that all of the locals already know about. The setting was wonderful, the service was exceptional and the staff really made you feel special for a wonderful evening of dining. The Stinking Rose is our new favorite restaurant in San Francisco! We will be back.
a friend suggested this place to me for my birthday. we went on a Saturday evening around 8pm. Our food took a really long time, most of it was cold (including the rare steak my friend ordered that had to be sent back) and to top it all off, when they sang happy birthday to me, one of the candles actually fell in my lap while it was still lit. it was a really disappointing dinner and i will not be back. try somewhere else! there are plenty of amazing restaurants in SF to choose from.
Fun, spirited restaurant... and lots of garlic! Good energy, and server was very nice. We let her know we were on a tight schedule, and she most certainly accommodated us! I was surprised at the prices for the food you were getting, but it is in the middle of the city I guess.
I came here tonight with my lifelong friends to celebrate my husband's birthday; our first birthday as a married couple. I called ahead 3 times to confirm our group size and to ensure the no corkage fee would still apply to our large group. All okay.
Tonight, we were seated in a semi-private upstairs room where there were also other customers seated. Within 5 minutes of being seated in the large echoing room, we (the party of 20) were told to be quiet. At one point, the manager even told us to use our "indoor voices". We were talking louder than normal because it was hard to hear in this type of room. But, we were a group of 20 people, are groups of that size ever quiet?
Later, the waiter moved the other patrons to a quieter part of the restaurant.
Then, the respective waiter for our upstairs room told us we ruined his chance of tips that night because we were so loud and we lost him his money due to customers leaving. I was so shocked by the unprofessionalism; later I went up to the waiter one-on-one to try to get on the same page.
The restaurant should reject (or better seat) parties of that size if noise is an issue, instead of ruining the experience of paying customers. We would have been more than happy to go to another restaurant.
