The Stinking Rose Ratings and Reviews
No fault of the restaurant but still the couple who were sitting two tables from us got into a major verbal fight with profanities and she even threw her phone across the room , we asked our server to call the manager, we were truly disturbed and upset and even worried about our safety . Nothing was done , Manager was not called to have them behave or leave . The man finally got up and left while she was screaming at him , then after five or ten minutes later she left . This was an anniversary dinner and was totally ruined by this incident .
We went here last weekend with some friends to celebrate a birthday. The decor was definitely interesting, and everyone was super friendly. Our drinks came out super fast, and were great. We all ordered something different, and the food was delicious. However, we were slightly underwhelmed by the lasagna. Otherwise, the sweet birthday song, hat and photo were a nice surprise! We enjoyed dinner, and were glad to finally dine here.
The garlic pesto pizza seemed to be lacking both garlic and pesto. The sea bass was bland. The rolls were good. We were originally seated on top of another group, even though the place was empty and it was after 1pm. Even the table we were moved to was tiny, while many nicer tables remained empty. We were never offered dessert.
I tried Stinky Rose for the first time to ring in the New Year. The staff was very friendly & polite. The young lady who checked us in at the door was very nice. We were seated fairly quickly the menu was awesome so many choices. The food was good but for me the " Highlight" of the evening was dessert; Italian Cheesecake.......YUM😋
A great way to ring in 2018!!!😀
We went in expecting a novelty experience, and were not disappointed. Tons of garlic, solid servings, and friendly service. Bring a bottle of good wine to share - there is no corkage fee. Ask for a booth to guarantee some privacy and quiet. We had a great time and would definitely return!
The whole point of making a reservation is so you can eat at a set time. Having to wait 45 minutes is way to long in my opinion. And with that no apology for being so late. I do believe the problem was specific to our group of six. They had no problem seating groups of two, four, or 8 or more but somehow could not accommodate our group of six. Should have known better when I checked in and the hostess said she had no idea how long it would be before we would be seated.
Food was very good but service was hit and miss in terms of wait times. Took over 25 minutes between our order and the time soup and salad arrived. After table cleared for the dinner portion, we had to flag down another waiter to get our desert delivered and that was after waiting at least 15 minutes.
Again not recommended for groups of six. With so many other good choices in the neighborhood we won't be eating here again.
We went to celebrate a birthday with a girls night out. We were seated right away, our waitress was friendly and helpful. The ambiance was fun, loved the decoration on the ceiling. The noise level went up and down but didn't feel like we were ever straining to hear each other. I had mentioned on the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday but they never mentioned it. That could have been because we were rushing to get through dinner so we could get to a play. I really appreciated the waitress helping to expedite our check out. LOVED the food, so delicious! Wish that they offered some sort of valet parking but parking is a challenge all over San Francisco. We will definitely be back!
The location was convenient to our hotel. This restaurant obviously caterers to tourists and does an admirable job of it. The food is nothing special and they have it down to a system to get you in and out quickly. There is nothing wrong with this restaurant but you can do better.
Let me caveat this by saying it was Christmas Day and The Stinking Rose was one of the few places open. I saw a reservation for 8:45 pm available on Open Table. We were hungry and it was 6 pm so I called the restaurant to see if I could get in earlier. The woman on the phone was very terse with me. She said, “No, sorry we aren’t taking any more reservations today.” I explained then that I saw an opening on Open Table and she said for me to try and book it then. I did and called the restaurant back to confirm it would be honored. A different person answered and said it was fine.
Upon our arrival at 6:45 pm we were asked to wait a bit (about 10 minutes) and then led to The Washington Square room where a frowning woman in a wheelchair was being wheeled out by her grandson. The waiter asked her if she had a good meal and she just ignored him. I got the sense she wasn’t happy with being stuck in that room, and soon I understood why.
First of all, it’s freezing back there on a winter night. They know it’s cold as they put a small space heater in the corner of the room but it doesn’t really do anything to make it feel warmer. It feels like you are eating outside the restaurant and by the back kitchen door in a hallway. It was not great and our server wasn’t very accommodating or understanding about it either. I mentioned it was cold and he just chuckled. He could have at least apologized or acknowledged the temperature. Later at the end of the meal I asked for garlic ice cream to be added to our desert and he said that our deserts were already plated. I get it was Christmas Day and that he was probably tired but it’s not hard to try and up-sell desert.
Was pleased to be able to reserve a table for a busy Christmas Day dinner. Restaurant was crowded and it was confusing checking in with a reservation but all that was resolved quickly, and easily absolved with delicious food, NO corkage fee, and great service from waiter Sean. Upstairs dining area was small for our table of four, with the bustling of other customers and wait staff in tight quarters. This was only a minor inconvenience for my party, who was very satisfied with their meal.
