The Stinking Rose
It was great
Terrific ambiance. Much nostalgia. Food is very good, and not overly garliced!
Let’s start at the front door. When we walked in, the three staff members behind the counter didn’t greet us and we had to ask them about our reservations. They were just looking us up and down and conversing amongst themselves. Our waitress was incredible but I felt that this place did not live up to the hype. I eat garlic with almost every meal it’s such an amazing garnish and I was so excited to see it showcased. But stinking rose fell very short. I ordered the salmon to share, and my mother in law ordered the meatball spaghetti. The salmon was maybe a 3 oz cut and the acini pasta was unappetizingly slimy. The flavors were there but it was very salt forward with slight hints of garlic. There were also a couple of bones in the salmon and for being such a small portion I felt it was two too many. The meatballs in the spaghetti were the only saving grace. They were full of flavor and came in a decent portion but the spaghetti was lack luster and greasy. My wife was so excited to finally try this place for her birthday and we made the trip up from the oc, but we left never wanting to eat there again.
We always enjoy the Stinking Rose! Great bar, divine Bagna Calda- excellent starter. Great Heavily garlic food choices and even a garlic sundae! Plus right on Columbus, the heart of North Beach.
The food was good, tasteful, but so so expensive.
The ingredients that make up my meal are extremely simple and inexpensive, so dinner should not be that expensive. It's a pity because the place is interesting and has a particular decoration.
Service was ok not very attentive hard to get attention of waiter
The Stinking Rose is a hot spot for me and my husband each time we visit SF from New Mexico. We have many fond memories of this place. Unfortunately, my husband passed away this summer and we were not able to return together. This time, I decided to drag my sister-in-law, cousin, and best friend along to celebrate on the day of what would have been my nine year anniversary. The food, service, and atmosphere all made it another memorable experience. Thanks for everything.
Great service. Extensive menu. Wonderful food. Even had choices for one in our group who can’t have garlic. Friendly staff.
Great location and value Food could be better and also french bagette will be better than the rolls
This place is amazing.
They have the best dishes using garlic. I even smash up the garlic cloved and eat it with my entree, it's that Good!
Due to the beginning of Fleet Week all of the restaurants we tried to make reservation at; around Pier 39 at for 16 people, they said no because fleet week started on Sunday and we could go on their waitlist. On Friday afternoon as a last resort we made reservation at the Stinking Rose and by 4 pm I had a confirmation for Saturday at 1 pm. The restaurant was very clean and offered a variety of seating options. we were promptly seated in a great locations, so that everyone could be apart of any of our conversations. Our waiter was very attentive and a lot of fun. He seemed to know what we needed before we did and his support staff was excellent and attentive. When we made our reservation we were unsure if everybody in the group liked the idea of a restaurant that serves "Garlic with a Side of Food". After lunch was over; all that everyone could talk about was the great service and how great the food tasted all the way down to the Garlic Ice Cream. The Drinks that were served were right on and tasted like they should. The total for the lunch was very reasonable and it was even less than what I expected. After leaving the Restaurant, everyone in our party was talking about how soon they wanted to come back we had people from Fort Bidwell, Reno, Cloverdale, Fremont, Sacramento, Santa Clara and Santa Rosa. In my opinion you would be foolish to pass up eating at the Stinking Rose, the food, the drinks, the service, the clean restrooms and the pictures on the walls are fantastic.
The Stinking Rose had a decor very different than the traditional restaurants. The table setting was almost spooky to some extent. In terms of food, everything had garlic in it, adding to the flavor. The complimentary bread serving was good, which could be paired with garlic pesto sauce. We ordered spinach and cheese fondue, which was baked, not what we were expecting, tasty none the less. Mushroom ravioli tasted great as well.
We love garlic and they bring it!!
Crammed into dark booth with little ventilation; spotty service even tho it wasn’t busy; salmon good, typical of area, ribs ok too. Best part was garlic parsley olive oil rub for bread but bread wasn’t that great. With plenty of competition, won’t go back
Fun space, but waiter was very rushed and did not check back to see if we wanted more wine. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. Wine was mediocre and cheap tasting, even though they charged $13/glass.
Great menu, drinks, and service. Our group of 8 were seated together.
I loved my experience. May I suggest you use a different oil for the herb/garlic pesto accompaniment with the bread rolls... it didn’t blend very well nor did it taste very nice... otherwise the food was delicious
Everything was good but it was cold in the restaurant.
Food was good but overpriced in a very loud environment, but our waitress was outstanding
Excellent service. Delicious food, from the warm, soft bread to the juicy steaks. Will definitely be going back.
Get the garlic ice cream! Just do it!
Prepare for Garlic overload. Garlic everything and it's all delicious.
We have actually recommended the place to a number of people and the funny thing is the The Stinking Rose was recommended to us by an Icelandic friend, Ragna Kristmundsdóttir, in 2015 when we had just landed in San Francisco after driving the Pacific Coast Highway from LA. This September, four years later, we arrived again driving to SF, this time from Boston via Route 66 and the PCH again, and the only thing on our dining plan was to visit the Rose again after the great time in August 2015. So we did and that visit didn't disappoint us any more than the previous. In short, a wonderful night out, great food, very good wine, very strange experience with garlic ice cream but not bad, and last but not least, excellent staff, I think our waiter was Nick, a memorable fellow to say the least. So thank you again, staff of The Stinking Rose, and please rest assured that we will reserve one dinner night for you in all our future visits to San Francisco and keep recommending you to friends and relatives in years to come. With gratitude and good memories, Atli Steinn Gudmundsson & Rosa Lind Bjornsdottir, Iceland
Nice ambiance and good stick-to-the-ribs Italian soup and entrees. Waiter was very attentive and helpful. Good for my out-of-town relatives who also enjoyed the North Beach location.
Came here the other night for our anniversary and we were visiting from out of town. My husband and I love garlic so we had to come! It was a Tuesday night at 7 and it wasn't too busy. Staff were very attentive and welcoming. The food was fantastic. I had the half order of crab and he had the shrimp linguine. I was impressed. Wish this place was on the East Coast!
Always love dining here when I arrive in San Francisco. It’s usually between lunch and dinner time on a weekday so it’s not too crowded yet. We always get a window seat to see people walking by. The food is great. Our server was attentive to our needs. Glasses were never empty.
It was amazing. Beyond everything I imagined. I love garlic so was quite happy!!!
We were seated in a stuffy corner on the second floor where it was very warm.
Attempts with getting a table on the first floor were rebuffed with the response that it'd take an hour.
I had to search for garlic in the food served.
It is not the place as it used to be.
Our waiter wasn’t the friendliest of people but was efficient.
Great experience. Super busy but food was prepared and delivered quickly and was delicious. fun place to celebrate a birthday.
Classic italian restaurant with character. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff, and the food.
Tourist trap. Not sure why all the excellent reviews because the food and service was mediocre and overpriced. Maybe we ordered the wrong food (lamb shank) but if you are true foodie I wouldn't recommend it.
We had such a great meal! It’s been 18 years since I’ve eaten there and it was just as tasty as I remembered. We had the roasted garlic appetizer, ravioli and a seafood linguine, paired nicely with white wine. We ended the evening by splitting tiramisu. Yum!
Food was great! Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our group enjoyed our dinner!
We came here on our honeymoon (we're both garlic lovers) and this place did not disappoint!
My friend recommended this restaurant and enjoyed the whole experience. Decor was Italian unique enjoyed all the pictures on the wall. Food was great love all the garlic flavor and smell.
Fun place to go
Waited about 30 minutes for someone to take our order, specifically said that we'd like separate checks before ordering, but wasn't when we received it in the end. Also waiter seemed always in a rush and ended up carelessly tossing the receipt to one of us. It's a shame because the food it's delicious, but i won't return due to poor service. Pretty sure they were understaffed which is also unacceptable.
We were not understaffed on Sunday 9-15-19. The server did have another large table ahead of you, but did take your order in about 10 minutes or so. You had a large group of about 10 guests and you were told that we only could separate 4 checks. Unfortunately that is all our cc system will allow us to do on each table. Sorry for any inconveniences and for you feeling that your server didn't meet your expectations. We appreciate your patronage and valued feedback.
