The Standard Bistro & Larder
Great selections and the preparation of the food was excellent. The bartender Michael made me a special drink to my specifications and it was perfect!
Vegetarian entree served lukewarm, not hot, twice. They did replace my meal with a new entree to take home. Disappointed...
Food and service was great. So was atmosphere. My only complaint is the portions were pretty small for the price.
The chef brought samples to the table and talked with us; the waitress was delightfully - very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and interesting - very European. Can't talk about the alcohol because we did not partake (I needed to drive home through the snow) but it looked interesting - the bar was well stocked.
Nice service and good food. We tried the restaurant week’s menu and thought it was well priced.
The french onion soup was cold and the Beef Bourguignon didn't have more than 3 small pieces of meat in it. Prices were much too high for the quantity / quality of food they were serving.
Our server was outstanding. He was the highlight of the meal.
Restaurant Week experience extraordinaire! Loved the wine pairings with food selections and expert advice from James!
We'd been wanting to try this place for a while, but most of our favorite restaurants are in downtown Ann Arbor so I was skeptical about its location way out on Jackson Road near Lowe's. Its cool, simple, calming decor won me over, though, before we'd taken a bite. Our server, Bob, was great -- attentive and friendly without being intrusive -- and we loved the food. Our favorite dishes were the first course of almost crunchy glass noodles with a very light, refreshing lime, coconut, and sesame dressing as well as our dessert of chocolate pot de creme with bits of candied orange zest. Their larder is impressive, too. We'll be back!
2 couples came with us to a Restaurant Week lunch. Restaurant Week allowed us to try out a variety of luncheon offerings and share our opinions. We viewed this french cuisine as our big meal of the day; the offerings were not super-sized but were ample, considering how satisfying they were. Some of us had to take part of our meals home. We all want to return for dinner sometime. The service was excellent, as was the atmosphere. Good job! The Standard provided an A+ dining experience.
The food is fresh with wonderful flavors in sauces and dressings. Wait staff were very accommodating including offering samples of two wines, before deciding which GLASS of wine to select.
Visited during restaurant week. Everything we tried was delicious. We got the wine pairings that were offered with the restaurant week menu and they were expertly matched to the food we ordered. The service was outstanding. We will definitely return!
We went there for the restaurant week and had dinner with the wine parings. We were glad that we reserved a table because it was pretty crowded. Everything was delicious. The wine pairing was fun. Our server, Mandy, was great. She was attentive and flexible. Great value!
Our service was excellent, but were rather disappointed in our entres.
Yum! French! My new favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor. Wish you were closer in.
A group went during restaurant week. A great value. Standard is pricey, but definitely worth it.
Courtney was great! The beef was nicely spiced just a little fatty. Enjoyed the wine pairing!
I met a former colleague for lunch and we had a fantastic meal. The food was excellent and the service impeccable! We will both definitely return.
A fantastic meal and wine pairing for both me and my wife, as well as great talking to the bartenders while sitting at the bar during dinner. Only two small issues were loud music and really bright lights in bathroom, but those pale in comparison to the great food and service.
A friend and I visited the first night of restaurant week. The shortened menu highlighted the best of the full menu, the food was delicious, the wine pairings were perfect, and our server Mandy timed our courses perfectly so that we enjoyed every bite without being rushed or waiting. Can't wait to return for happy hour and future meals!
The service was excellent, but the food was incredibly disappointing, not at all what would be expected from a fine dining establishment. I hope this is only because we went during restaurant week, and not indicative of their usual quality, but we went specifically to see if this would be a new special occasion restaurant for us and this was a poor showing.
Here are some complaints from the restaurant week menu::
salad - large pieces of marinated carrot were very hard - need to be roasted
Soup was not very hot
Fish was mushy - overcooked; carrots were over roasted
Chocolate mousse was OK but nothing special
Beef bourguinogne just had mashed potato (another veg?)
This is our second visit to the restaurant; we are not very impressed. We have eaten many, many times in France in moderately expensive restaurants. These were far, far better in quality and presentation.
The restaurant looks modern - I love the chartreuse velvet booths. The menu is really detailed and fun to study over. There were multiple entree creations I'd not heard of before. The artisan bar looked like it would have been fun to hang out in.
Beautiful inside and out. Can't wait to sit outside when it's warm out. Our waitress was wonderful, although the bill was a little messed up.
Food was great, but could've been hotter and the side veggies were a little over cooked, like burned. For such a pricey place I would expect a little better.
The food was delicious, perfectly prepared, beautifully served. Lovely interior atmosphere - too bad it looks out on Jackson Ave. But a nice glass of wine and you can imagine yourself in the French countryside... In contrast to some other reviews, I did not think it over-priced or the portions small - everything was appropriate for an elegant meal. The staff are eager to please. I'll be back to try many other things on the menu, and bring some favorites home from the mouth-watering Larder.
Excellent food, great ambiance, and amazing cocktails. I love eating here!
Wonderful fresh food that was served at a slower pace like brunch should be. We had great drinks as well as a varied set of menu selections all of which were outstanding. The food was warm and comforting just what you would expect from a French inspired Larder. I also learned that they sell some of their own side dishes and cuts of meat as well as do custom butchering on site. We'll be back.
Restaurant Week Brunch!
We took a group of 6 and the meal was consistently "so-so". The ingredients seem to be very high quality, but the overall delivery was lacking. In some cases the seasonings were "bland" (Porchetta, Trout Almondine). Two people ordered the Beef Bourguignon (stated to be Julia Child's recipe). The flavor was good, but it was anemic on the amount of meat. The Pappardella pasta appetizer was fairly good, but the Shrimp were overcooked. On the plus side, the wait staff was outstanding. Overall, for similar money, I get better meals elsewhere. They have some good ideas, but it needs some work.
Great upscale night out. Great service and food. Pricey but enjoyable.
James was an excellent server! Very friendly and attentive! The food was amazing...from the duck crepe appetizer, lobster bisque and cassoulet entree....all exquisite!
We enjoyed our evening. Some of the food was over-salted; the frites were on top of the mussels (a bit odd); the server was attentive but overly familiar (prefer not to be referred to with endearments).
France comes to Ann Arbor! This was our first visit and it's now our favorite. There are many small plates and entrees, each one quite different from the other. We had a hard time narrowing down our selections. We'll be going back weekly to work our way through the menu as well as the gin line-up. I don't every recall seeing such an extensive line-up at any restaurant. The staff was very friendly and were quite willing to take all the time we need to explain the dishes, wine, gin, etc.
First visit to The Standard Bistro. We were all impressed with the menu range as well as the fabulous greeting and special care from Kevin (in retail). The server was terrific as was the Sommelier. The hiccup for me was the leaning toward more New Orleans style French than necessarily French Bistro. As an example, the menu features Oysters Rockefeller - rather than fresh oysters on the half shell. While the server was quick to accommodate our request for fresh oysters, she pointed out that there would not be any cocktail sauce but, to our surprise, offered an aioli or dijonaise sauce instead (I was not familiar with serving oysters this way but recognize this is in line with the chef's preferences for heavy preparations. We requested a more traditional French mignonette to accompany the oysters and were delighted with the one we were served. Additionally, the oysters came with a homemade cocktail sauce (?) I chose to also order the Beef Carpaccio. I was disappointed that it was fully covered in a thick layer of parmesan and a hearty splash of olive oil. I ordered it, because I truly love the taste and texture of carpaccio. It's a rare treat and I hoped for a lighter option that would allow me to savor the blend of flavors and textures of this dish. For dinner, I picked the "steak frites" with my steak prepared medium rare. On arrival, I was offered ketchup for my fries and the steak was doused in a heavy cream sauce. Again, I would have expected an offer for mayonnaise (French), and was disappointed that the flavor of a great steak, cooked perfectly, was masked with a heavy sauce. I sampled the Lobster Bisque of my companion and found it to be a dark, rich, creamy soup with an overpowering dose of sherry. My dining companion was delighted with the house special Porchetta with risotto. The Pot de Creme was exactly as expected - creamy dark chocolate perfection!
Best Menu in Ann Arbor. European dishes that I haven’t seen offered anywhere (at least in Michigan) in the US before. Beef Carpacccio was outstanding.
Tried The Standard on NYE and had a wonderful time. The Oysters Rockefeller and Lobster Bisque are sensational and the steaks to die for. Ambiance was elegant, intimate and cozy. We will definitely be back
Very good food service was so good first time for new Year’s we will come back
We love coming to the Standard for their inventive kitchen and wonderful service. Wine list is another plus, with a thoughtful selection that will satisfy various tastes and budgets. Great experience!
Fantastic experience -- My fish dish was wonderful. We also shared Mussels as an appetizer which was particularly good with bread . Good beer selection--many compliments on the cocktails ordered by the table. Most importantly-everyone I interacted with on the staff was energetic and all about my having a great night with my dinner mates.
Took a little while for our server to show initially, but from that point on, everything was stellar, from our tapas-style shared small plates to mains of lemon sole, beef bourguignon & bouillabaisse, through shared pot de creme and creme brûlée—The Standard killed it on every bit of it—oh, all complimented by a killer bottle of Sancerre. And the service was attentive and transparent. Just could not have been better.
