Nestled into the Chiltern Hills, between Henley and Marlow and just up from the River Thames, Hambleden can only be described as quintessentially English.
Benefiting from the care of the Culden Faw Estate and the protection of The National Trust, the village is one that time forgot, with few changes over the last century.
The Stag and Huntsman, lovingly restored by The Estate under the auspices of heritage architecture, Ptolemy Dean, maintains the old world charm of a Country Inn. With a focus towards the local community - Hambleden and the local residents - myriad of small and cosy drinking and eating spaces within the Inn, the nine letting bedrooms and the pretty garden also provide a resting place and watering hole for those who travel further distances to the village.

I rarely leave negative reviews but we had a Sunday roast here and the service was shocking. We had to ask for menus, ask for our plates to be cleared after an hour and ask for the bill multiple times. The vegetables were nice but it seemed like the rest of the food had been sitting out for a while and was quite hard. The stag mounted to the wall also fell off onto my sisters head at the table, when we told our server she asked us if we wanted her to put it back on the wall, missing the point compeltely. Overall wouldn’t recommend and wouldn’t return

We've had lunch here a few times & the food has been good but on this occasion it was disappointing Two of us had the fish & chips & whilst the fish was fine the batter was rubbery; one had the prawn cocktail which was tasteless & the Cape Malay curry was also disappointing

There is a trend for pubs to overstate their quality and the Stag & Huntsman is no exception. It is a rather ordinary pub with a standard menu, mediocre food, indifferent staff and a bland experience. After a number of mistakes and inattentive service we noticed that a service charge was automatically added to the bill. We asked for it to be removed. "Yes, of course" was the response. Do the workers care? Do they see any of the tips? Is this a cynical way for the the management to inflate their profits? What a shame that this place isn't as described. It could be so good.

I ordered a beef roast dinner. The meat was good quality and the portion size was substantial, although the food was served cold. One of the waitress's was very polite and made a good effort, although we felt the other waitresses were abrupt and unwelcoming. Overall the experience was disappointing and I hope these issues will be addressed because it’s a nice building in a beautiful area.

A beautiful, stylish pub that has retained its village character while offering a gastro menu. Enjoyed the friendly welcome, cosy eating space and warm fire. The staff were efficient and attentive, though we had to wait for a while to have our orders taken and drinks brought. Our food came promptly. Though not a memorable meal, it was very well cooked and generously portioned.

Fantastic lunch at this incredible pub in a delightful location. We moved away from the area around 12 years ago and had not been back to the Stag & Huntsman for some time but we not disappointing when we returned. Excellent food and a good selection of local beer.
