Chef Evan Campbell has created a seasonal menu with small and large plates featuring seafood, meats and duck, as well as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options.

Excellent service, delicious food, extensive wine and beer selection
Heather was an awesome server. I would come back just because of her
Fabulous meal. Superlative service. Every person enjoy their appetizers and dinner entrées. We tried practically everything on the menu. Delicious. Can’t wait to return. Emily our server was knowledgeable charming and attentive
Great restaurant all around. Food was imaginative and good. Loved the "gritscuit" take on shrimp and grits. Service was attentive and friendly. Ambiance is good. Friendly but you can carry on a conversation at your table.
Great vegan option!
Limited menu as the new menu was starting Tuesday so they were out of two regular items and there were no specials. Server seemed utterly preoccupied; would quickly answer a question and be gone before anyone could ask another. Plus she offered our out of town guest readers to borrow which was kind but apparently they were in with a pen that must have broke so our friend was covered in blue ink on his temple and into his hairline. She brought something to try and help remove it but no apology much less a complimentary cocktail. We had a good experience before so that’s why we chose to bring our visitors but we were very disappointed.
First visit and what a great find. Delicious food, great drinks and the service (chef/sous chef/bartenders) were awesome! I can't wait to go back and try the updated menu and meet my friends for brunch. The duck was on point as well as the lamb chops - we ate everything on our plates...
Great food, drinks and staff. The shrimp and griscuits was our favorite! Only minor issue was that the atmosphere was a bit bland but maybe that's because we had dinner on the earlier side of the night(?). We will definitely be back.
Thanks. Had a good time!
We had a wonderful experience from a very warm sincere welcome through a delightful dinner.
These folks care and they get it.
I have been there several times. It is outstanding. As with all small restaurants in the city, it is loud.
First time at Stables and was very impressed with service, food and atmosphere. Great place in a neighborhood setting. Will definitely go back!
Except for one thing, we loved our first experience at The Stables. That one thing was, for an entree costing $26 there should have been a larger portion size. As it was, the Cioppino was incredibly delicious, but to have one or two shrimp, plus one or two scallops, plus six or eight mussels, no matter the exquisite flavor of the sauce, the portion size was disappointing. We live nearby, so we may try another visit, another entree, but we are now skittish about handing over good money for flavorful, but miserly, portions of food given the enormous number of competitors in the area.
This is the second time we have eaten at The Stables. Great place for couples or small parties of friends. Food is very good. We will go back. We had an outstanding server who really knew the wine list. She also brought us 3 Reds to try to make our final selection.
Excellent service, chef even came over to the table to help us select and answer questions. Food was wonderful, especially the scallops!
This was a jewel of a find. A work friend recommended this place and we needed to get served quickly before a show. Evan was great! We started at the bar, went to a table, had the grilled nectarine and buffalo mozzarella appetizer and the scallops and duck for the main course. Everything was delicious! We got out in plenty of time. We loved The Stables so much we came back after the show for drinks and the best chocolate dessert ever. Thanks Evan for coming to Richmond.
Delicious food, excellent and knowledgable service, charming atmosphere and very convenient to the VMFA. We will definitely be returning!
We had a very nice dinner at The Stables. The food was excellent. It's a great little place.
Impromptu change of plans for a business dinner led to finding The Stables via OpenTable and we were very glad we did so! Excellent service and food, and creative cocktails. Looks like there may be a bit of outdoor seating too.
Sunday brunch was good, not great. Nothing really special on menu, consider it adequate. Newly renovated interior is a fresh improvement over previous establishment in this space. Perhaps dinner will be as interesting. Will give it a try.
The vegan spaghetti and meatballs was terrific!
Great spot. Service, food, place all top notch. Looking forward to a return visit.
Great Sunday brunch!
Great place, amazing food, atmosphere and service! Highly recommed
We were seated immediately upon arrival with a very friendly and helpful staff. The food was wonderful and the cocktails were delishious! Entrees and appitizers are appropriately priced for the quality and portion. Definitely a great spot for a special occasion or to simply have a great drink and appetizer in a wonderful area of Richmond.
The service was very disappointing in that we had spoken to the hostess, in person, to reserve a particular room a month in advance and we were assured of our reservation. But when we arrived, our reservation had been changed and we were seated in another room that was was not suitable for a business meeting. Rather than being apologetic, the staff was very defensive and curt, giving us no reason to dine there again. I would not recommend this restaurant. In addition, they offer very limited wine choices.
Marvelous Restaurant in the Cary Street area!
We tried The Stables last night after getting a recommendation from a good friend. We're very glad we did! It's a very intimate and inviting atmosphere and friendly staff. The drink menu is a standout with unique cocktails that have equestrian names. Be sure to try the Belmontier, the Halflinger and the Snafflebit. The food menu is a small, carefully crafted marvel that will make both meat lovers and vegans happy. I can highly recommend the Spring Strawberry Salad to start. We then had the Vegan Spaghetti and Meatballs (5 stars) and the Southern Scallops (another 5 stars). Service was superb and there's off-street parking in the back. All in all, a welcome addition to the Richmond feed scene.
I really enjoyed my first trip here. The Chef greeted us at the door and checked on us throughout the entire dining experience. The food is great and the cocktails also excellent.
I am taking a client there tonight.
A perfect venue for long-time friends to gather for an evening. Our table in the small room added to the ability to enjoy lively conversation. Meeting the chef was very welcoming. Our server was excellent--very knowledgeable with just the right amount of attention. Of course, the small and full plate options offered many opportunities to share and enjoy a variety of offerings. I cannot think of even one thing that could have been improved. Thank you for hosting our relaxing and special evening.
My toast was burnt, yet cold when it arrived. The food was fine, the service was haphazard. I don't anticipate we will return.
Went with my wife for Mother’s Day. We had the brunch and were well satisfied with the food, service and overall experience.
Second time we’ve been to The Stables. We will be back again!
Went for Mothers Day brunch with another couple. Food was very good. Service was great.
We were looking for a place before a VCU graduation. The Stables had availability and we were so glad we dined there. Small place, nicely done. Staff was fabulous— our server was perfect. Just the right amount of attention and great recommendations on the menu. We shared a small plate (mussels) and two entrees (duck and lamb.). The server timed the dishes so we had a tasting meal experience. The food was excellent. Good wine choices and a great craft cocktail to start. A lovely dining experience.
Great Local Restaurant! Their Brunch is spot on and their dinner is delish.
The menu had lots of interesting options and my food was really delicious! Our waitress was perfect...there when you needed her but not obtrusive, quick with the bill, friendly and informative. It was pretty loud, as there was a table of what appeared to be folks celebrating a graduation...lots of "whoooo" and high-fiving...but we rolled with it. Really cute restaurant that I'll visit again.
Mid week Mother’s Day dinner was fabulous. The food was on point, as were the cocktails. The happy hour special are FANTAStTIC. Will definitely be back.
Excellent food, wonderful server (Heather), stellar cocktails and fun place.
Location great, waitress nice, could have been better paced, not a great value but will try it one more time
If we’d stopped with dinner, I would have given it 5 stars. We both loved the scallop appetizer and the tuna tartare. My lamp lollipops were perfectly cooked as was my husband’s salmon. We split a pineapple crisp for dessert that was sadly uninspired and tasteless. We’ll definitely go back, but just skip the dessert next time!
First time visit, upon a recommendation from a friend. Quaint atmosphere, excellent friendly service. Very good food.
