                                                                                                Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest appellation in the Cote de Nuits, and has the most Grand Cru acreage as well. Classic Gevrey produces a more muscular style of pinot, with darker fruit and notes of underbrush and earth. Domaine Arlaud is a biodynamic producer intent on making wines of place. Naturally fermented, with no additions or subtractions, this wine is aged a year and a half in oak to tame some of its more sauvage characteristics. Maison Roche de Bellene is a high quality négociant, meaning they buy grapes rather than grow their own. 2000, not unlike 2013, was a somewhat troubled vintage that required care in the vineyards. This 2000 is in a perfect place right now, fully developed with a beautiful nose of dried earth and red flowers. Domaine Maume was purchased in 2011 by Marchand-Tawse. These are the last bottles in town, folks. A good amount of new oak on this wine, but the cool 2011 vintage is an early drinking one

                                                                                                      Vosne is the most well known village in the Cote de Nuits, and its eight Grand Crus produce some of the most expensive wines in the world. When drinking Vosne, you expect sumptuousness – broad, rich and ripe – without ever losing freshness and elegance. Like a finally tailoured power suit, or a sports car that is somehow not obnoxious. Roblot Marchand is a small, 5th generation domaine, owning around 8ha across a smattering of villages. This small parcel, technically a climat of Flagey-Echézeaux (these wines may be labeled as Vosne at the village or 1er cru level) is higher up on the slope, benefiting from a slightly cooler microclimate during the warm 2015 vintage

                                                                                                      A Bit More Focus: Mature Bordeaux

                                                                                                      Bordeaux. You might have heard the old people talk about it, like Bob Seger or home ownership. Admittedly passé in some circles, Bordeaux remains the benchmark for a lot of what we consider "fine wine" . It has a long and storied history, blessed with moderate weather and immoderate wealth, and it gave the world Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the Riggs and Murtaugh of red grapes. Best enjoyed with age on the bottle, these wines – some tight and austere, some bold and rich – develop lovely aromas of licorice, underbrush, chimney, dried fruit and tobacco. Ever drink a Napa Cab and think, "this shit is so extra?" These Old Dogs top out at 13% alcohol, all cool, quiet confidence. Please allow us to decant these for you, as there will be sediment in the bottles. We can pretend we're in one of those fancy restaurants downtown

                                                                                                        Long before the Medoc came to be, the Graves region of Bordeaux was known for the high quality of its wines. This even Cabernet/Merlot split shows the merits of this cooler vintage, often overshadowed by the legendary 2009's and 10's. Look for a lot of structure here, with developing aromas of graphite, tobacco and dried black fruit

                                                                                                                Just like you should buy from the little guys in great vintages, look to the great producers in vintages with suboptimal conditions. They can afford to discard the lesser fruit and put out a quality product meant for aging. This Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine drinks the youngest of any of these, with sweet baking spices and primary black fruit aromas

                                                                                                              Jesus, I love Piemonte. Tucked away in the northwest of Italy, surrounded on three sides by mountains, this vast region produces an impressive array of wines based on grapes grown almost nowhere else. Yes, Barolo and Barbaresco are magnificent wines, but there is so much more to this region than simply Nebbiolo. I hope you enjoy this little array of wines, a sort of "Island of Misfit Toys" vibe to celebrate the little guys

                                                                                                                          Freisa is closely related to Nebbiolo, genetically speaking, and shares similar attributes. Lightly coloured, with a linear, high acid mouth feel and prominent, drying tannins. You need to try this with the mushrooms and spaetzle - perfect pairing

                                                                                                                            Grignolino is a charming grape, always light in body with prominent tannin. Sourced from a small 5ha family owned vineyard, this wine falls into the natural wine camp, completely unadulterated. Do note, this wine has some brett (i.e. brettanomyces, an especially fragrant species of yeast that gives a wine that "farmyard" appeal). I think it's on the right side of polarizing, but you can be the judge

                                                                                                                                  Wine Flight #1: the New Okanagan

                                                                                                                                  Three 3oz Glasses. $27. I am from the Niagara region, a flat humid expanse wedged between the industrial Hellscapes of Hamilton and Buffalo, New York. Growing up in Ontario, no one gave much thought to the region's wines, however good they may have been. You drank them because they were cheap and under screw cap. Devoid of civic pride, I moved West and was startled by the hometown hero status of BC wine. People couldn't get enough of this stuff, their love of aromatic white blends buoyed by an almost jingoistic zeal. To put it plainly, I was nonplussed, like the new kid in school who can't quite understand the appeal of the prom king. I've had a softening in my heart, however, as a series of young up and coming producers have shown me there is life in the valley. This is not an exhaustive list of producers I enjoy, mind you, but I've focused here on a few new projects that deserve some love

                                                                                                                                    I met proprietors Costa and Judy almost 4 years ago at a dinner party and listened intently as they detailed their desire to make wine. Fast forward to present day and they've actually done it, along with quitting their jobs in the city, having a child and Costa growing out his hair to somewhat resemble a more barrel chested Russell Brand. Jaboulet, a historic producer known for world class Hermitage wines, are here working solely with Marsanne (locally known as Sauvageres), producing a beautiful, richer styled wine - think lemon curd, citrus blossoms, stone fruit, etc

The entire day was a hit, especially the excellent wine and the tapas style dishes from the Stable House. The food was perfect for sharing, and for someone who has some hearing impairment, it was easy to converse throughout the evening. All in all it was another great experience,and we look forward to our next visit!

Make reservations because almost from the time of opening it is full including at the bar. Great wine selection; take the time to read the notes (at least some) as they are witty and sometimes downright funny. Our table loved everything from the selection on ‘the boards’ suggested by our server to the squash soup to the foraged mushrooms and the chicken liver pâté (one of the best I’ve tasted). Very attentive service, no pressure to hurry and great atmosphere to catch up with friends.

                                                                                                                                                                    what better way to spend a leisurely Sunday having brunch. A cozy spot, friendly service, exceptional food! The 3 of us enjoyed the roasted carrot, cous cous and hazelnut salad with the added sous vide egg, the breakfast sandwich (fig jam was awesome) and the croque madame. Will definitely return to experience the dinner menu and wine selection.

If you have not been here before ordering food is a little confusing, but best to ask your server how to order some items. Wine was expensive, therefore we only had a glass. Would have been nice to have been able to purchase a half litre. We would go back to sip some wine and have a plater of meats and cheeses on a sunny day.

The wine recommendation was perfect, the food was delicious and our server was excellent- friendly, attentive without being disruptive and very accommodating. We were a bit short on time and she made sure our food was served with time to enjoy it. Highly recommend The Stable House. We will be back 😋

Loved the gnocchi duck dish especially this time and if you haven’t yet, you must try the chicken liver pate .... mmmmmmmmmm - one of our faves in Vancouver!

                                                                                                                                                                    I love, love, love Stable House. But was a bit disappointed in the mains offered yesterday, which were either pasta or cold steelhead on bread. Would have liked a warm protein. But a totally delightful restaurant in every other way and I wish there were many more like this -- so warm and intimate but not pretentious or overdone.
